Fun roguelike with checkpoints, builds are very limited but the combat is fun with fast pace attack and dodge with strategic use of the stats debug system.

Very cute art and good gameplay. The game is also quick, so it doesn't overstay its welcome. I had fun from the begining to the end and even took the time to complete the codexes in less than 15 hours of game.

Debugging Hero from Team ETTU is a roguelite that builds its identity around a genuinely inventive premise, taking the familiar structure of top-down action dungeon crawling and reimagining it through the lens of programming logic. Instead of relying purely on reflexes or conventional combat upgrades, the game introduces a system where players can directly manipulate variables within the game world, effectively “debugging” enemies and situations in real time. This idea gives the experience a distinct flavor, setting it apart from many of its genre peers that often lean on more traditional mechanics. At a basic level, the gameplay loop will feel recognizable to anyone familiar with roguelites. Players navigate through procedurally structured encounters, defeat waves of enemies, and gather upgrades that strengthen their capabilities over the course of a run. Movement and positioning remain essential, particularly during more chaotic encounters where enemies attack from multiple directions. However, what transforms these otherwise standard engagements is the ability to alter underlying values—adjusting damage output, reducing enemy strength, or even shifting behaviors through card-like debugging actions. This creates a dynamic where combat is not just about dodging and attacking, but about reshaping the conditions of the fight itself. The debugging system is the centerpiece of the experience and its most compelling feature. Players are given tools that function like simple programming operations, allowing them to modify numerical attributes in ways that can drastically change outcomes. Increasing your own attack value, halving an enemy’s health, or stacking multipliers to create bursts of power all contribute to a sense of creative problem-solving. When used effectively, these mechanics make encounters feel less like brute-force battles and more like puzzles that can be approached from multiple angles. There is a satisfying sense of outsmarting the system, as if you are bending the rules of the game rather than simply playing within them. Despite the strength of this concept, the depth of its implementation can feel somewhat restrained. While the ability to manipulate variables is novel, most interactions revolve around relatively straightforward numerical adjustments. The system hints at the possibility of more complex or unconventional manipulations, but it rarely ventures into truly transformative territory. As a result, while the mechanic remains engaging, it does not always evolve as much as players might expect over extended play, leaving some of its potential unexplored. Progression follows the typical roguelite structure, with each run offering opportunities to collect items and enhancements that shape your build. Certain upgrades expand the scope of what can be modified, adding variety and encouraging experimentation with different strategies. There is a steady sense of growth as players become more familiar with how different effects interact, but the overall pool of content and build diversity is relatively modest. Over time, this can lead to a degree of repetition, particularly for players who are used to roguelites with broader systems or more extensive variation. The presentation is clean and functional, featuring a pixel-art style that suits the game’s scope and tone. Visual clarity is generally strong, which is important given the layered mechanics at play, and the interface does a reasonable job of conveying the necessary information without becoming overwhelming. While it may not stand out visually in a crowded indie landscape, it supports the gameplay effectively and keeps the focus on decision-making rather than spectacle. In terms of responsiveness, the game handles well overall, with movement and combat feeling fluid enough to support its action-oriented design. Encounters can become intense, and the ability to quickly reposition or apply debugging actions is crucial. There are occasional moments where interactions feel slightly imprecise, but these are relatively minor and do not significantly detract from the overall experience. Ultimately, Debugging Hero is a game driven by a strong and imaginative central idea. Its approach to combat and progression offers a refreshing change of pace, encouraging players to think differently about how they approach challenges. While it does not fully capitalize on the depth that its concept suggests, it still delivers a satisfying and distinctive experience that stands out within the roguelite genre. In the end, it is a creative and enjoyable title that may not have the breadth of larger entries in the genre, but compensates with originality and a unique mechanical hook. With further expansion of its systems, it could reach even greater heights, but even in its current form, it offers a memorable and engaging experience. Rating: 8/10

A very fun twist on the roguelite type of game where you can cheat enemies' stats down, making it easier to take them down. Of course, you can cheat down several different kinds of stats, meaning you can defeat them in several different ways. Once you get a certain item, you can even start affecting hostilitiy, leading to alternate endings. RNG for a specific special item can be a pain, but that's inherent in the type of game. Overall, it's short, but I've played it for way longer than the story lasts just because it's fun!

A small and fun little game (priced as such) where you get an interesting ability to alter all sorts of character and item values with cards. For example, you can pause time and increase/reduce the damage of each individual projectile, enemy, trap, ally, and even yourself (lasting the whole run) or even reduce an enemies hatred of you to the point where they become an ally. It's an interesting concept, and the developer managed to fit it in nicely to a roguelite gameplay structure with nice looking art, good game feel, and a fun gameplay loop where you collect relics that modify this core mechanic to create interesting builds.
