When you see the trailer for the first time you realize that the store page really doesn't lie, it really is an FPS like no other. Hyper Demon achieves Tetris-like perfection with it's simplistic design, it is also that simplicity that gives it an insurmountable amount of depth, it really feels more like a puzzle game masterpiece than a mere mindless shooter, everything serves multiple distinct purposes, they are there for you to mold the battlefield in your image, place the blocks as you see fit. The game is an audiovisual experience that doesn't feel like it belongs in our dimension, it really pushes the idea that Australia is just as alien as the grander cosmos. As much of a visual mess and an attack on the senses as the game is, it really conveys information to the player better than most games with a much more easy to read visual design, there are no hud elements (apart from the score timers and such) but everything else gameplay related is told to you through these surreal visuals and trippy sounds, when you first see the trailer your first reaction is probably "wtf am I looking at" but after a few hours you'll learn to read the chaos with such clarity you can't even fathom how it's possible in the first place, bravo to Sorath games for having the first game in history where 360 degree vision is actually completely readable! The gameplay has no music because the sound design IS the music, the sounds of dashing through six scuttlers consecutively is the audio equivalent of overdosing on psychedelics, the sounds of these man made horrors will make your ears gasm whether you like it or not, because it's required. HYPER DEMON sparks great envy in me that I could perhaps never come up with something as perfect as this, often when video games are talked about as an artform, game mechanics are ignored, Hyper Demon is not thought provoking in the slightest, it doesn't have a some sort of agenda to push or grander meanings to convey, it's just there to push you on to be the best player you can be, whenever your reach new heights it's there to cheer you on just as loudly no matter how incremental that record change was. So go on and die as many thousands of times as you need to, tasting the immortals blood is worthy of all of the struggles of your glassy body that shatters on singular impact, play enough and the game will invade your land of dreams as well, you too will begin to see those incomprehensible golden monsters scurrying upon a plane of existence that can only be described as liquid nothingness.
hyper demon seems like a very gimmicky game on the surface, but the moment you get into it, it becomes immediately apparent the intentionality of every minute decision the developers made. the 180-360 degree spherical vision starts out as a quirky novelty, only further contributing to the constant blizzard of sensory overload. However, as you continue to play, your brain begins to seamlessly decode this insane field of view + rear-view overlay, and it quickly becomes a necessary asset for keeping up with the storm of enemies all simultaneously trying to kill you (I really recommend 180 FOV). the enemy design is perfect. Mastering hyper demon enemy-prioritization is extremely difficult because everything can be non-threatening and meaningless in one moment, and your absolute #1 priority the next. Controls are also fantastic, and every action you can take seamlessly synergizes with another series of actions, leading you to develop an expansive repertoire of strategies to clear out enemies more efficiently. at its core, hyper demon is less about surviving (as opposed to its predecessor, devil daggers), and more about killing as much stuff as possible. With the scoring system, (where you're constantly losing points and need to kill to keep it up) replay system, quick reset, and almost 'clip farming' culture of the game, youre encouraged to constantly disregard your safety to take insane risks. playing it safe is not playing at all (+ you look cooler when you send clips/runs to your friends). the last thing worth mentioning about this game is that it puts you into a flow state like no other game can. maybe its the fact that you have to constantly be 100% dialed in on the 5+ decisions you make every single second, or the fact that your brain needs to allocate all of its RAM in order to even process whats being beamed into your eyes. the only flaw with this game is that playing for too long causes the backs of my eyeballs to feel like theyre being waterboarded with sriracha.
