Swarmlake is an intense first-person bullet hell shooter where you’re fighting an ever increasing number of enemies. It’s one of those games that’s super easy to get into and very hard to master. No story (which is nothing unusual for a bullet hell game), and the game throws more and more enemies at you as you progress in a single arena. It’s fast-paced, it’s flashy, it runs incredibly smoothly, and it’s very intense. So much so, that the time you spend with it might be limited. I can only take it in short bursts – half an hour max, then i need a break. What’s both great and infuriating is the constant care the game receives from its single dev. The game is now 8 years old, and he just released version 4.0. Which – yet again – changes the fundamentals of the game completely. While it’s fantastic that the game keeps getting updates, this also means that the previous versions get wiped. I’m not of a fan of this. 4.0 adds mechanics that move the game further away from its early minimalistic approach. You don’t just run and gun anymore; you now have an ability to charge an “ultimate” shot, there is a “rocket jump” ability (with cancelling mechanic), and variable jump hight is added. All this adds needless complexity to an already overwhelming gameplay loop. Version 3.0 from a few years back already went in that same direction: It added a player health system (before that, one enemy hit meant you were dead) as well as adding boundaries to a previous almost limitless arena. If there were a way to access the previous modes from a menu (or even better: have a customize mode), this would be a non-issue. But there isn’t. There is only a single way of playing the game. Do i recommend the game? Absolutely, especially when it’s 90% off (like it currently is). Do i love it as much as i used to? Sadly, no.

For 50 Cents you can have a crazy adrenalin rush. Climbing the leaderboard for the #1 spot is the objective of the game. Not for the faint of heart! Build a swarm. Don't let the swarm get to big or it will touch and kill you. Collect pink crystals to cut down the swarm. Prioritize pink crystals over everything. Its a game of "how long can you survive as it gets more crowded". *Pink crystals cut down the crowdedness temporarily while also increasing it.* Yellow bricks are xp blocks not swarm. Once you understand what you're doing that's when the game starts to get fun.

Easy to pick up, easy to put down. If you find yourself scrolling your library unable to decide on a game to play, consider giving it a shot. The runs are quick and the game loads fast. It's also $3, so its practically free.
