It's an understatement that this game changed my life. Found the series from Lost Pause. Played it, laughed the hardest I had, finally understood how RPGs can be fun sometimes, and became a full blown anime fan. But even more than that, I became a Nep Fan for life! Looking back on this entry, the writing isn't as serious as VII, SVS, or even R;B2, but instead its simply really well balanced between story beats and pure shenanigans and comedy. This game made me fall in love with the series, and I'd say it still has some of the best writing in the franchise from a pure enjoyment factor. The gameplay is pretty straightforward RPG, but it's satisfying at it's core and has enough to grind at if you're that style. The characters MAKE this game/franchise. So iconic and fun in their own ways, you're guaranteed to walk away with a favorite. And of course, the game is a joy to folks with a soft spot for video game history, as it's chock full of references and themes ripped straight from the industry over the years. Also, this game doesn't skimp out on the fanservice, both in the CGs and outfits, but also in the dialogue and humor, making it perfect for folks who like a bit of ecchi in their anime games. This game is so lovely and funny and such a good time, and it's still one of my most played games to this day! Nep Nep for life!

Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1 is the modernized starting point for the series’ main lineup, remixing the original game into a more approachable, system-driven JRPG. It’s equal parts light adventure and parody, built around colorful characters, constant gaming references, and turn-based combat with enough customization to keep it interesting. If you want to understand what “Neptunia” is about without digging into older versions, this is usually the easiest place to begin. Combat plays out on small battlefields where positioning matters, and your turns are shaped by combo setups, skills, and resource management. Instead of feeling like a pure menu-driven routine, fights ask you to think about spacing, hitting multiple targets, and building toward stronger abilities. It’s still friendly to casual play, but the more you engage with character builds and party roles, the more satisfying the battles become. A major hook is the amount of progression and tinkering the game offers. You’ll be upgrading equipment, crafting items, unlocking “plans” that change what shops sell or what enemies drop, and opening new dungeons and options through steady advancement. This system-heavy structure makes the game feel like it always has another small objective ready, which is great if you enjoy grind with purpose and constant incremental improvement. The story is less about deep drama and more about playful rivalry between the nations of Gamindustri, with the CPUs representing console-war archetypes through exaggerated personalities. The writing is packed with fourth-wall breaks and jokes about game development, genres, and fan culture. When you’re in the mood for that kind of humor, it can be charming and oddly cozy; when you’re not, the endless chatter can feel like it’s slowing everything down. Dungeon design is functional rather than memorable. Areas are usually straightforward corridors and rooms that you’ll run repeatedly for materials and experience, so the sense of discovery fades faster than in more exploration-focused JRPGs. The game’s pacing also reflects that: it’s happiest when you accept a loop of story scene, dungeon run, crafting, and repeat, rather than expecting a tightly curated, constantly evolving campaign. Presentation leans on bright character art and expressive portraits, with environments that get the job done but don’t steal the show. Music and sound effects support the upbeat tone, and the overall vibe stays consistent: cute, colorful, and self-aware. As with the other entries, there is noticeable fanservice and suggestive humor, which some players treat as part of the franchise identity and others find distracting. In the end, Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1 is a comfortable, customization-rich JRPG powered by personality and meta comedy more than world-class level design. It’s best for players who like building characters, chasing upgrades, and spending time with a chatty cast that never stops joking. If you want a serious narrative or highly varied dungeons, you may bounce off, but as an accessible introduction to the series, it does its job well.

It's a good time. Defo suffers from bad early game, and grindy at times, but it's a charming time, and you can get some good fun out of the combat and so. Don't expect something incredible, but with the price of admision, specially on sales, this is worth trying. Known side effects: you will develop brainrot towards either Neptune, Noire, Vert or Blanc (I did with Vert).

I am NOT a JRPG guy, but this was a blast! The characters are what really sells it, and there isn't a dull one in the bunch! The combat is also pretty fun in my opinion, though take that with a grain of salt. Some people say the game is very grindy, but that was absolutely not the case in my playthrough. Once in a blue moon, I'd face a boss I couldn't beat on the first attempt, but after not even 10 minutes of grinding, I'd be overleveled. I didn't even need to grind for the last boss at all! I do have criticism in regards to the Plan System, which every player should be forewarned about... because I wasn't! In short, "plans" are crafting recipes. The problem is that some of these plans ("Add Enemies") can only be unlocked on certain chapters, and there is a cascading effect if you do not unlock these, causing a lot of things you want to be completely inaccessible to you. This wouldn't be a problem for the KNOWING player, but I was unfortunate enough to only find out about this on Chapter 7! I never got to see Marvy's bikini in-game!
