I Am Dead is a gentle, introspective adventure that turns the concept of the afterlife into a warm, imaginative exploration of memory, legacy, and the quiet marks people leave on the world. Developed by Hollow Ponds and artist Richard Hogg, and published by Annapurna Interactive, the game opens with the death of Morris Lupton, the late curator of Shelmerston Museum. Instead of slipping into oblivion, Morris finds himself awakened as a benevolent ghost on the serene island he once called home. When he learns that the island’s slumbering volcano is preparing to erupt, he and the spirit of his loyal dog Sparky set out to find a new Custodian—a guardian spirit who can protect Shelmerston from destruction. This setup establishes a journey rooted not in fear or sorrow, but in the quiet hope that even after death, one’s purpose can continue through connection and memory. What defines the moment-to-moment experience is the game’s signature “inside-looking” mechanic, which allows Morris to peer through objects, layers, and memories as though he were slicing through them. You can examine every piece of furniture, every container, every tiny object tucked away inside drawers or cabinets. This ability is not only an exploration tool but the heart of how the narrative is revealed. By discovering personal items tied to the memories of Shelmerston’s former residents, Morris unlocks recollections from the people who knew them in life. Each memory becomes a small vignette, told through stylized visual sequences that blend past and present, revealing the personalities, joys, habits, and struggles of characters who once walked the island. The result is a form of environmental storytelling that feels deeply intimate, as if Morris is piecing together the emotional fabric of a place that meant everything to him. The island itself becomes a character in its own right. Shelmerston is rendered in bright colors and whimsical shapes, filled with quirky inhabitants and curious landmarks—from the lighthouse to the fish-folk community to a distant fort whose past is layered with history. Everywhere you explore, you can feel both the love and the eccentricity with which the island was designed. The aesthetic is not realistic, but it is full of personality, resembling a children’s picture book brought to life through gentle animation and dreamlike soundscapes. The visual simplicity works in harmony with the game’s tone, creating a peaceful and almost meditative environment to investigate. Even the humor sprinkled throughout the character stories feels natural, presenting a world that accepts the supernatural with a shrug and a smile. I Am Dead’s narrative structure is uniquely soothing, focusing on the connections people form and how they endure long after someone has passed. Each potential Custodian candidate Morris encounters has left behind threads—friendships, regrets, small gestures, little joys—that are rediscovered through mementos hidden in the world. These stories rarely involve grand tragedy; instead they highlight the gentle, human truths that make life meaningful. Through these recollections, the game suggests that death is not an ending but a transition, and that emotional presence lingers in objects, stories, and the people we touch. Morris’s journey becomes a celebration of how memories shape communities, and the way the past lovingly clings to the present. The gameplay itself is simple and repetitive by design, centering almost entirely on exploration, hidden-object searching, and memory reconstruction. For players who crave action, puzzles with high difficulty, or fast-paced mechanics, the game may feel too slow or too uniform in its structure. But for those open to its gentle rhythm, the repetition becomes part of the meditative charm. There is no fail state, no pressure, and no stakes beyond curiosity—making the act of searching through rooms and examining tiny objects a pleasantly contemplative exercise. The game’s pacing encourages players to savor the details rather than rush through them, and this approach complements the emotional softness of the narrative. Ultimately, I Am Dead is a touching and unusual experience, one that trades tension and spectacle for reflection and warmth. It offers a world built on compassion, one where every object carries a memory and every memory carries a life. Its quiet tone, unique mechanics, and heartfelt storytelling create a narrative that is both comforting and poignant, shining a light on the ways people continue to exist through the stories others remember. It is not a game about danger or fear, despite the looming volcanic threat; instead, it is a gentle reminder that even after death, the bonds we form and the kindness we show continue to echo. For players who appreciate thoughtful, narrative-driven experiences, I Am Dead stands as a beautifully understated meditation on the value of a life well loved. Rating: 8/10

Fun simple game. Lots of clicking around somewhat aimlessly. Exploring small objects and small places for memories. Not always the most intuitive. But cute setting and characters. Don't expect anything fast paced or terribly coherent, it's an exploratory romp.
