This one is niche. Il-2: Cliffs of Dover Blitz Edition optimises and sometimes entirely revamps an ever-aging title. The latter is best exemplified by clickable cockpits. This game is an enduring passion project for the developers who took the helm of this title, and it shows. Admittedly, the UI and menus retain their clunk, but they are still intuitive (far more so than, say, Il-2 1946). The game comes with an external joystick configurator in the root directory, which can bypass the clunk of the in game menus. This flight sim was the first I played in the Il-2 series. It comes with a variety of campaigns for the RAF and Luftwaffe, including day and night engagements/bombings. There is no other game out there that captures the struggle of ‘the few’ during the Battle of Britain and the Blitz with such fidelity. This game is still receiving updates and DLC. However, updates are slow and often delayed (such as the newest planned DLC). That is to be expected of a small development team, however. There are plenty of planes and other assets and the map spans northern France and much of south-eastern England, from Normandy through London and across to Southampton - enough to satisfy anyone interested in simulating the hardships of the Battle of Britain and the Blitz from the perspective of those who fought in the air. I definitely recommend this title to all who enjoy WW2 combat flight simulation.

A diamond in the rough. Il-2 Cliffs of Dover (Il-2 CloD) has a lot going for it and the potential is there for something really excellent. But, at the moment, it's very much a flight sim for dedicated enthusiasts. For the base game, you can't go wrong for £8.49 but if you're a beginner you might find more immediate fun with DCS World or Il-2 Great Battles. For the more dedicated types and by this I mean more tolerant of rough edges, this sim offers a lot that others don't. It offers aeroplanes that are not simulated elsewhere like the Bristol Beaufighter and Blenheim; it models a lot of stuff internally that even more modern sims lack. For instance, if you get some bullet holes in your Spitfire wing you can see the spars, cannon etc. Moreover, unlike the more modern Il-2 Great Battles series, Il-2 CloD has many clickable buttons and switches meaning you don't have to map and memorise loads of bindings. There's a decent mission editor and although it's not quite as user friendly as the one in DCS World, it is leagues more friendly than the one in Great Battles. Finally, Il-2 CloD allows many more active units than many of its contemporaries, meaning it's possible to more accurately simulate large bomber formations etc. without bogging everything down. Further down the line, there are plans to introduce four-engine bombers like the B-17 and Lancaster. The caveats are that the user interface is a bit spartan and could do with an overhaul to make it more user friendly. The graphics are fine but more modern sims look better, for example the clouds in CloD are a bit basic currently (an update is in the works). Also, feature updates are on the slow side compared to its peers but this is a consequence of the development model which is done on a volunteer basis.

Hello, I am a frequent flyer! Neglect pre 2024 comments! Cliffs of Dover Blitz is not perfect, but with a little Batlle of Brittain determination there is a world of Flight Sim enjoyment to discover. The Community is helpful!, suporting, funny and flight experienced. Conquer the game like the BOB pilots had to concquer the planes and their qualities. Curiosity requierd! Buy the Bundle!

Hidden gem - Older than Great Battles but its almost a deeper sim. Revived by Team Fusion and there extensive mod is now part of the default game. Better physics, flight model Full fidelity cockpits The true sequel to 1946. Looks good for its age, plays even better Still being worked on, about to release a multicrew 4 engine Bomber the B-17 which will be a first for WW2 flight sims. Prequel timeline to Great Battles - We can enjoy both.
