I really wanted to purchase Inkulinati, but I had some reservations before doing so. Having read many mixed reviews, I can now positively recommend it. It's a funny, quirky and irreverent game that reminded me of the times I played Age of Empires and other medieval-related games. I have always loved medieval codexes, and this is one of the quirkiest games I have played this year. The mechanics are overall simple, Player Vs Machine. I appreciate that it has a lot of tutorials, and non campaign battles for fun. If you enjoy medieval like combats with funny characters and you don't mind a certain amount of repetition and challenges, this game is a perfect fit for you.

I was initially drawn to the game for the art style and was pleasantly surprised to find it really engaging, both in terms of the turn-by-turn strategy of individual combats and learning more overarching deckbuilder-type strategies you need to employ in order to successfully beat an entire run. It took me until my second or third run to really start understanding how to put together a collection of beasts, hand actions, and talents that synergize well with each other into a coherent playstyle but are still capable of tackling different challenges. Like with many deckbuilders, it ends up being more about editing and paring down your army of beasts rather than collecting the best individual units that you come across. The gameplay loop can be fairly slow—this game doesn't feel like a roguelike that's designed for you to sit down and play through an entire run in one sitting, much less multiple runs. However, in my opinion the slow pace of each combat complements the more puzzle-solving nature of the gameplay, and the overarching act structure helps break down longer runs in a way that feels both manageable and satisfying. Both the enemy strategies and the sheer number of beasts and abilities in the game might feel a bit overwhelming at first, but I learned more from observing the tactics being employed against me than I would have by just going through and reading a dozen individual ability tooltips, and mastering ways to overcome each of these challenges and turn those strategies back around at your opponents is immensely rewarding. Map generation or enemy strategies that initially may have felt insurmountable or like sheer unfair luck of the draw end up becoming puzzles that you can work through using the tools in your kit. Overall, I found the game incredibly charming and just challenging enough to be continuously engaging without being punishing. Reading through other reviews, I can see how this may not be for everyone, but I've thoroughly enjoyed my time with it and would recommend giving it a try (and sticking with it for a bit if you find yourself struggling at first! Once it clicks, it really clicks!)

This game drew me in with its unique art style (pun intended) but its gameplay is also very challenging and fun. There's a good variety of unit types and flexibility to create your ink armies so it doesn't get stale easily. Also, I looked up the artwork and apparently all of the creatures in this game are actually found in medieval manuscripts. Any game that teaches you something about the real world while making you forget about it for a short while is worthy of attention.
