Dec. 2024
You know the feeling when you have high hopes for a game, only to be let down once you finally play it? Thankfully, *Inkulinati* is not one of those games. I had high expectations—mostly because I’m a sucker for all things tactical and medieval—and the end result more than exceeded them. The medieval manuscript-style design immediately drew me in. This might be the best tactical game I’ve played in a very long time. The battles are short and sweet, with plenty of depth. They never feel unfair, striking a perfect balance with a rock-paper-scissors mechanic that’s complemented by just enough randomness to keep things interesting. The music, partially written and performed by Hildegard von Blingin (who also appears as an enemy, alongside other tongue-in-cheek rival Inkulinati like *The Master,* clearly modeled after Yoda), is fantastic. It’s somewhat reminiscent of *Warhammer: Dark Omen*’s OST, one of my all-time favorites. Speaking of influences, it’s impossible not to mention *Monty Python’s Life of Brian,* particularly Terry Gilliam’s animations, which clearly had a significant impact on the game’s presentation and humor. I do have a few criticisms. First, the game has a somewhat steep learning curve, especially when using a controller (I’ve been playing on my Steam Deck). That said, this issue is mitigated by the excellent controller integration—a real technical feat considering the intricacy of the combat. Adding an “info layer” was a particularly smart move. The inclusion of Hildegard’s Battle Academy, accessible from the menu, also helps by complementing the regular tutorial with enjoyable, puzzle-like mini-battles that teach advanced tricks. Second, the 2D, platformer-esque arenas can feel a bit cramped at times. I wish the developers had implemented a jump action to clear obstacles and platforms. However, this is a minor issue, and the codex-like aesthetic more than compensates for any such inconveniences. In summary, if you’re a fan of tactical games or simply appreciate its unique aesthetic, *Inkulinati* is well worth your time. It’s truly a marvel how far the developers have taken a concept born from the amusing doodles of bored monks (did I mention there’s even a boredom mechanic in the game?). Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some bunnies to draw—so I can fart my opponents into oblivion.

Great game for the steam deck. The distinct art style is why I bought the game, especially since the Pentiment creator recommended and even said this game's art style is more accurate to that period. It's a unique strategy game that progressively teaches you how to play as well. Overall I found it enjoyable and love the sound effects.

Apparently its the only 2024 released game I played this year. But its still a cool tactical/strategy game, with fun concepts and lots of replayability

After 66 hours and closing all achievements I highly recommend this game. - Suffering medieval style as a chef's kiss - Interesting battles - Lots of interesting factions that help to go through the game in a varied way, creating interesting builds - Very atmospheric music - Though the tutorial is quite long, but it helped me to understand all the mechanics and work out my tactics I'm looking forward to the next project from Yaza Games ❤️
