Dec. 2025
Invincible Presents: Atom Eve is a visual novel with some turn-based RPG combat elements set within the broader Invincible universe. I will preface this by noting that I've never watched Invincible or otherwise interacted with any Invincible media before playing this game (and, for those wondering, it turned out fine: I didn't require any Invincible knowledge to enjoy the game). While my reviews are spoiler-free, I can still talk a little about what to expect. The game is mostly about Eve's interiority (as you might expect from a coming-of-age tale): Eve struggles to understand herself in relation to the people around her (imperfectly loving parents, friends with different expectations of Eve and different personal ideas of who Eve is as a person, etc). This is all taking place in a world that alternately demands restraint and heroism, or offers choices (sometimes literally) in which there are no paths where everybody wins. Player choices reflect this emphasis. Decisions rarely feel theatrical, but they do feel expressive, shaping Eve’s tone, priorities, and emotional posture. Even when outcomes are constrained, the act of choosing feels meaningful because it defines how Eve moves through a situation rather than simply what happens next. The result is a narrative that values emotional continuity over dramatic divergence, and that restraint largely works in its favor. (Also, note that skill points can be spent to enhance or add additional dialogue options at the expense of furthering Eve's combat prowess: in my playthrough I bee-lined for these). Structurally, the game blends dialogue-heavy scenes with turn-based combat encounters and light progression systems. Combat is alright, but it can get a little grindy in a straight fight. A few of the fights are something more like puzzles where the player needs to recognize that the fight is a puzzle in order to make it through: I found those a little more interesting. I like the comic-adjacent artwork and the paneled presentation. Eve especially is frequently depicted in and out of uniform, in relaxed or traditionally feminine poses, allowed to be soft, uncertain, or visibly overwhelmed without that vulnerability ever diminishing her agency. There’s a comfort to the way the game lets her be seen as someone capable of extraordinary violence if necessary, but not defined by it. Her strength, both literal and metaphorical, coexists naturally with moments of hesitation and emotional openness. She is never framed as needing to harden herself in order to be taken seriously, and that confidence in her interior life (even when she has no idea what she's doing or even wants to do) makes her one of the better depicted young women in a story like this. The experience itself is relatively brief, and its ambitions are modest. Players looking for deep mechanical systems or radically branching narratives may find it limited (I rarely felt like my choices were lifting a lot of weight, as opposed to something like, say, Scarlet Hollow). There are moments where the story resolves a bit too neatly, where it feels content to move forward rather than linger in discomfort. But that restraint also gives the game a sense of clarity. Atom Eve knows what it wants to explore, and it doesn’t dilute that focus by reaching for scale it doesn’t need. Ultimately, any coming-of-age story is, to some extent, nostalgia bait. It asks us to revisit versions of ourselves we’ve outgrown, to remember how enormous small things once felt (or to remember fond things that we can no longer experience directly). What surprised me about Atom Eve was how close it managed to come to home. Eve’s overbearing parents, her isolation at school, the fragile ecosystems of her friendships: these aren’t unfamiliar ideas to the genre, but something about them moved me. It’s entirely possible that this response is idiosyncratic to my own personal experiences, that the game simply met me at the right moment and pushed enough of my own memory buttons. On its surface, Atom Eve is a perfectly fine superhero story. But by the end, it was the abstract things I carried away with me more so than the other stuff: a renewed tenderness for adolescence, that feeling of graduating and leaving so many things behind, having an entire future ahead and not having any idea what to do with it.

I don't have a lot to talk about here. Atom Eve is a pretty decent, albeit short game. Yep, I cleared the whole thing in ~4.5 hours. No, I didn't rush. The game puts more emphasis on the visual novel aspect than the combat. If you're expecting a complex turn-based rpg, look elsewhere. I approached most battles using the same strategy: just set up a personal shield early on, and manage my action economy 'til I'm able to pick something off & gain the upper hand in the fight. How was the visual novel, then? Alright. I don't get the impression that there were a lot of branching paths you could follow within the story. There were a handful of minor events or conversations that you could seemingly have different outcomes to, but I'm not interested in the game enough to check 'em out. This may sound stupid, but going into this, I didn't know anything about Invincible, nor did I care. If this game was created to drum up interest over the series, then it almost worked on me, but not quite. If the game would've been longer, there's a decent chance I would've looked into the tv show. Granted, I picked this game up because I liked the visual style it was going for (you know, the comic-book style), so I didn't have any real expectations for the game. Therefore, I can't say I was disappointed.

I am so lonely. All the other Viltrumites are scared of me. Noone talks to me. Noone wants to be my friend-- They think I am unstable. They send me from planet to planet committing atrocities in their name. And as I get better at it, they fear me more and more. I am a victim of my own success. Conquest. I don't even get a real name, only a purpose. I am capable of so much more and noone sees it. Some days I feel so alone I could cry, but I don't. I never do. Because what would be the point? Not a single person in the entire universe would care. Take it to your grave.

If you like the TV series you can't miss this game. You will play as Eve and you will explore the relationship with her family and all the members of the superhero team she is part of. The art style is great, the combat is good but it gets a bit repetitive after a while. The game doesn't last very long but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. Recommended!
