April 2025
Please keep in mind this review is based on EARLY ACCESS, and the game is still growing in core functionality. At this point, inZOI feels pretty much like a stripped down version of The Sims 4 with much better graphics. Gone is the constantly intrusive twee animations that EA loves to foist on its players: everyone in the whole damned world being afraid of thunderstorms to the point where you just want to disable that $40 game expansion you just bought, for example. Character creation is well done, though many of the presets seem to be subtle morphs of one base mesh and offer less variety than appears at first glance. The option to upload and apply one's one textures is VERY cool to have built into the game. Sims has a great modding community, but if you've ever tried to make clothing or furniture and mod it into the game, then you know what an unbelievable pain it is as great as many of the available modding tools are. Build mode is a little clunky to me. I've spent countless hours building in The Sims, so some of this is probably just me overcoming muscle memory and expecting a sims-like game to have the same controls (as we are all experiencing with the WASD keys no longer moving the camera, but the character). Some of the items seem to be listed incorrectly. The "computer" section of the furniture menu offered mostly sound equipment, for example. Still, the interface is very serviceable (though I really don't care much for the painting and texturing tools, tbh. Perhaps they'll grow on me as I acclimate more.) Game play feels a little dead at this point. The other zois one encounters in the game seem pretty lifeless. Starting conversations with most of them doesn't seem to keep their attention. Much of the verbalization is flat and somewhat toneless. People just wander off aimlessly. I find the conversation interface to be a little crowded. There are a LOT of default conversation options presented, and then a categorized menu with helpful tags on items that will directly benefit your character. Again, part of this is overcoming expectations based on other games, but I found I had to pause way too often to find items that the game suggested my zoi wanted to discuss, and in some cases they weren't present at all. The WASD keys defaulting to character - rather than camera - movement isn't just problematic as a sims player learning a new way to play a life simulator. A lot of the spaces in-world are extremely cramped, and inZOI doesn't do as well with hiding interior walls and attached furnishings as EA. Yesterday, I went up and down the elevator twice trying to get out of it to get to my apartment. I had to point and click to finally manage, leaving me wondering what the benefit of having to constantly press a button for movement brings to the game. Of course, point and click movement works just fine, but then you find yourself straying for those buttons to move the camera. It's just going to take time to get the navigation down (for me, at least). The inventory as it stands is extremely limited, but there are some fantastic options for textures and color combinations. For some reason, this works for me for furniture but not for walls. I'm finicky, I guess. Being able to choose textures and colors separately rather than having predefined bundled combinations of both, is a huge boost making even a small inventory much more versatile. Not all items can be re-colored and re-textured like this, but inZOI gives you the option to filter for only those that are. Also missing is the "and then your character wanders off for work... see you in 8 hours." You get your zoi to work by yourself. No chauffeurs (there is a great metro system, though). And it's up to you to take your zoi through the entire work day. I don't even know if there's an option to stay at home while your zoi works. I didn't look for one. The focus for inZOI seems to be actual daily life, not uncovering alien artifacts or learning about the secrets of magic from ghosts, vampires, and wizards. I love that stuff about The Sims. I love just as much that NONE of it is present in inZOI. Your game isn't going to be sidelined by vampires because you forgot to put up garlic. In fact, I'd go one step further. Not a big fan of the Meow Coin reward incentives. If you're going to do away with magic, then do away with magic potions. Probably not a popular opinion, and the reward track screen is in no way intrusive. If you choose to ignore it, you can. That doesn't mean daily life has to be boring. I'm training to be an idol! The singing coming from the recording booths is... perhaps unintentionally haunting. That's as cutesy as it gets. There is a practice dance studio, computers to study career-related items on, a full kitchen (because you need to each lunch), co-workers to meet and talk to. What I like about inZOI the most is that it proves you can have a life simulator based on life simulation, not spectacular (and sometimes overly gimmicky) exceptions to it. I think the surface needs to be scratched much, much more. The default life-span of a zoi is relatively short, and it seems to take a lot of time and effort to foster personal relationships, or advance at work. Still, I don't foresee a future for inZOI in which one has to disable half the expensive add-ons to the game in order to enjoy the features of the NEW expensive add-ons without the old ones interfering, or having to spend 30 minutes of simulated time watching your character cutely tip-toeing away from the weather while expressing a vaudevillian level of panic. So you live, you work, you die. Occasionally, you meet someone you might want to spend time with (if you're straight. inZOI offers the option to create a non-heterosexual character, but only offers heterosexual romantic options leaving, again, one to wonder... why?). But there's more to life than that. It doesn't have to be mermaids on tropical beaches where we uncover rare treasures at a highly suspicious rate. So what is it? That's the question I'm waiting for inZOI to answer. I think they will answer it just fine as the game flushes out over time. I don't think inZOI is in any way a "sims killer," but then who says it has to be? It's similar enough to attract a lot of the same crowd, and different enough to offer a unique experience. If anything, having a solid "sims competitor" is great for simulation fans all around. Right now, nothing is pushing EA to do The Sims any different than they are doing it now. A solid chunk of its core audience finding joy in a new direction might cause them to give more thought to making Sims 5 just more of the same with a new price tag. Having choices - and good ones - is an obvious benefit to players. inZOI is a good one, I think.

As a long-time Sims player, I was always optimistic about InZoi after seeing it's initial reveal trailer, and I have to say it has really impressed me. If you love the life simulation genre but have felt frustrated with The Sims 4’s endless DLC model and limitations, InZoi is absolutely worth checking out. Right off the bat, the level of customization is fantastic. The character creator is incredibly detailed, allowing for more realistic and unique Zois right from the start. The graphics are also a huge step up from The Sims 4, with smoother animations and a more natural look. One of the biggest wins for InZoi is its open-ended gameplay. Instead of being locked into rigid, pre-designed interactions, it feels like you have more organic ways to develop relationships, careers, and daily life. The open world is also a huge improvement over The Sims' instanced neighborhoods. You are free to explore seamlessly without loading screens breaking immersion, making the world feel more alive and connected. You are also in direct control of your Zoi, able to walk and run using traditional controls, rather than being locked to the "click here to move" system, which is still present for those who want it. On top of that, the developer actually listens to the community. After backlash about Denuvo being in the game, it was removed before launch, showing a real pro-gamer mindset. The dev has also stated that he wants InZoi to be highly moddable, which is a huge plus for anyone who loves community-driven content. Unlike EA’s approach of locking features behind expensive DLC, the creator seems focused on giving players real freedom and customization options. It is still early and there is room to grow, but the foundation here is solid. If you have been craving a life sim that moves the genre forward and actually respects its players, InZoi is absolutely worth keeping an eye on. Edit: For some reason people are claiming that I am either a paid reviewer, used ChatGPT to write this, or my account is a "bot". I can assure you that none of those is the case, and despite steam saying (at least on my end) I only have 1 hour of playtime, I have by my best estimates about 8-9 hours, and had 4 hours when writing the review. Unsure why steam isn't tracking it accurately, but it's happening on all my games currently so it's definitely an issue on my end.

I'm a 34 year old man and I've been with EA since "The Sims" and back then this what we thought the game would eventually turn out to be.....For years and years we have begged EA for a game like this and they never listened. This game is AMAZING!! It's ONLY the EARLY ACCESS!!!! This game has so much potential that it isn't funny!! This game already beats out the sims on the fact that it has most of the DLC content already in the game and its still in beta. EA has been greedy for far too long and now it's about to finally cost them. Good job Krafton Team, you guys have something good going here and please keep listening to your community. Don't be like EA.

I want to give a W to the devs for removing Denuvo, making the game now run better and without hindrance to the future of modding. They've shown to listen to community feedback multiple times and make not only the changes needed, but in a timely manner too. The future looks bright for inZOI.

The graphics in this game makes my computer sound like an international airport. If inZOI pulls off being successful then there's literally no reason for another Sims.
