Dec. 2024
"I've done a lot of thinking about fear. For me the crucial question is not how to climb without fear-that's impossible- but how to deal with it when it creeps into your nerve endings." --Alex Honnold I recently finished Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden and although it is different in every way from Jusant, developer DON'T NOD sure know how to spin a yarn. The climb you face appears otherworldly. You begin with a kiddie wall and by the end are pulling off multi-step configurations of belaying, jumping gaps, swinging across empty expanses, and grabbing onto moving holds from mid air in between the sweet relief of periodic solid ground as you ascend. The controls feel great, albeit with occasional issues relating to your relative distance/axis to the climbing surface and other objects you are trying to get to, and the hand-over-hand mechanic getting a little hung up. You do have a stamina meter that requires more thought and attention for some of the longer complex pitches. The difficulty I think is going to depend on the gamer but overall it is not a souls-like climbing experience by any stretch. There is no combat and no death mechanic that I'm aware of. The worst consequence is that you fall and lose progress on a pitch and have to start it again. It is quite generous. While your routes are actually pretty specific and limited by what you can interact with, you do still have to figure it out. Also, much of the extra content is off the beaten path so you will need to do a little bit of exploring and backtracking if you're aiming to collect everything. This extra content includes letters, which aside from what you can glean from climbing, are the main narrative device. There is no voice acting and no other dialogue. It's just you and the little Ballast (plooper) buddy and the Tower. I think it works very well. The environment is stunning, as you can maybe imagine given the sheer height that everything is occurring. Some of the views are breathtaking (and if you're scared of heights like me, thrilling). It is also a very strange yet familiar place, somehow existing in both the past and the future. I think it's this mechanism that really resonated with me: that it is an entire meditation on the present moment, despite the periodic interruptions of a troubled past and uncertain future. It felt a lot like Journey. Jusant is best played with a controller. I missed a lot of the achievements and it took about 7 hours of play to finish. There is a chapter select that tells you what you are missing in each chapter for those inclined to 100% which is helpful. I could not get it to run on Steam Deck and it ran hot on my laptop. The ending, while not a tear jerker for me, was still touching. Much like making it to the top of that behemoth of a tower, I am happy I finally saw the credits on this enjoyable experience. 4.5/5 for me.

Nice climbing game. Visuals are okay and the soundtrack mostly just does the job. Concerning the plot, it is not easy to follow since it mostly progresses through letters that you have to find and also its not that engaging itself... Best feature of the game is the climbing itself ( as it should ) with many different areas to explore and different pathways to take and reach your destination. Also very interesting the effect the weather has in some parts of the game. The game may look and feel calm and simple, but there are sections quite intense and challenging. Overall its a good game and of course it is recommended, however for its content and duration, buying it on a discount is highly advisable. Played it on the Steam Deck and the game feels a bit sluggish and there are parts with big frame drops.

Not since Celeste has a game about climbing made me feel this way. A meditative and intuitive experience, Jusant tells a barren yet hopeful story through environmental clues and notes as you climb your way up a tower that mourns the presence of the ocean. Going into it, I worried about the controls being frustrating, due to a lot of climbing games these days being rage-inducing. But it's in fact quite seamless and relaxing, with the right amount of rewarding challenge that doesn't feel punishing or diminishing. The only time I broke anything was when I did so on purpose by trying to see how out of bounds I could try climbing. If you're on the fence due to the lower poly graphics, the screenshots don't do the art style full justice without the animation. It has a natural, charming warmth that together with the art direction and music makes a beautiful picture. And if you don't enjoy the challenge at all, you can mix and match the settings to accommodate you. Jusant also offers a wide variety of accessibility options. If you're like me and you don't like camera shakes or motion blur for example, you can adjust it to your liking. All in all an experience I won't soon forget.

First game I completely played through on my Steam Deck, and I can only recommend it. Gameplay: Jusant offers a refreshing take on climbing mechanics in video games. I let out a sigh of relief when I realized this game was free of the “yellow paint on ledges” that plagues so many other titles. The climbing feels both engaging and naturally rewarding. The method for traversing the game world is also the core gameplay itself. It’s a difficult thing to get right, but Jusant absolutely nails it. The game starts simple, gradually introducing more elements to keep track of. I never felt like the climbing became too repetitive or predictable. Jusant regularly throws you into scenarios that force you to look at things from a different angle. Lastly, the game and its systems don’t overstay their welcome. Art and World: The environments are beautiful and mesmerizing . I really like the art direction, though it might not be everyone’s favorite. If you pay close attention, you can find many little hints about what happened to the world and its inhabitants. The music is stunning and really fits the vibe the game is going for. I find myself occasionally listening to it on Spotify when I’m out and about. In short: Lovely, compact game ( took me 9 hours ). I can only recommend it if the vibe of the game appeals to you.

Good game built around a strong, well implemented climbing mechanic. If you enjoyed the climbing parts of games like Uncharted, you'd probably like this game. Story-wise, however, it may not appeal to some people. It's a bit of a snapshot rather that a whole story with a beginning and an end, so expect to get more of a surface-level of understanding of what happened, and that entirely through notes and letters left behind by the former inhabitants. This also means there'll be a good amount of reading (there are no voice-overs). If you don't care about the story, you can totally skip it and just work your way up the mountain. If you skip everything and just work your way up, I'd estimate around 6-7 hours of gameplay. I'm a search-every-nook-and-cranny guy, though, so I ended spending about 12 hours in-game. Also possibly worth mentioning, I played this entirely on a Steam Deck and it worked perfectly.
