June 2025
I'm a huge fan of the first Kathy Rain. I loved it so much, that I begged the devs to make a sequel with Kathy and Eileen in my user review. So I'm very grateful towards the devs and Raw Fury that they made this happen. And guess what? Kathy Rain 2: Soothsayer far exceeded my expectations! I'm not sure where to begin, because everything in this game is what I expect from a retro-style point & click adventure. The pixel art is wonderful, with a huge amount of detail in the environments and lovely character animations. Kathy and Eileen are some of the best characters I've seen in a video game, and their voice acting is excellent. The story is very well written, with a perfect blend of exploration, suspense, humor and supernatural events. But what an adventure game makes or breaks for me are the puzzles. Luckily, Kathy Rain 2 also delivers for this. The puzzles are clever, make you feel like a real detective, and the difficulty is perfect for me: not too easy, but also not frustrating hard. I enjoyed every minute with this game and no doubt I'll replay it sooner or later. Thank you dear developers for making such a great game. And thank you Raw Fury for supporting this extremely talented studio. <3 P.S. Can I beg for another sequel here as well? :)

I never played the first Kathy Rain, and despite the game itself recommending you play the first game first, I didn't feel like my enjoyment of Kathy Rain 2 was spoiled in any way by not having done so. I went in fully blind, and while there are rather significant story beats that reference the first game, I still enjoyed Soothsayer. So much so, I ended up going ahead and buying Kathy Rain 1 after I finished this one. And as these two games are currently bundled together on steam, you can save a little bit extra! Here's some of the things I loved, and a couple of negative takeaways from my time with Kathy Rain 2. Positives Art - I firstly want to praise the art style. I'm a sucker for good pixel art games, and the environments, and character models, are especially pleasing to the eye. There's a lot of detail and I was wonderfully immersed in the world of Kassidy. I also want to give a special mention to the thumbnails on the achievements which I don't believe I've ever done, but these are honestly some of the best looking and sometimes hilarious achievements I've seen on Steam. These will really look great on the Achievement Showcase on your profile! Achievements - This brings me to my next positive. While there are a lot of Achievements (65), it was a fairly easy 100%. Some of these are hilarious and require you to try out really obscure interactions, showing that the devs really thought of every odd little thing a player might try. For example I got one for trying to throw my medication into a drain! While I only received around half through natural gameplay, They were fairly easy to go back and grab any time since I had manual saves at the start of each day, and they added a good laugh to my final hour with the game. Manual Saves - Nothing infuriates me more than a game that only has autosaves. Great design decision. Puzzles - There's varying levels of difficulty to the puzzles. Not all were hard as I'd like but I spent more time than I care to admit on two particular puzzles. At times I even felt stupid, and in a detective game, this is a good thing. I rather a game like this make me feel stupid than the game treating me like I am and holding my hand every step of the way. They let me solve the case on my own which I love. Story - Easily the strongest part of the game. Without spoiling too much, it's a well-written neo-noir detective thriller with some Lovecraftian horror elements. I didn't go in expecting the supernatural element to the story but for me personally, it wasn't unwelcome. The voice work was also very well done. Negatives Re-playability - I may be mistaken but I didn't feel like it was possible to fail solving the case. You're not allowed to leave conversations without first asking specific questions. And if a cutscene leads to you or a POI dying, the cutscene just restarts and you're forced to pick different dialogue options. While I understand restarting a cutscene if I die, I would've liked it if POIs stayed dead and you were forced to live with that outcome, possibly losing a lead and leading you down a different path to solving the case or outright failing altogether. It would've added more re-playability to an already short game and an incentive to restart and try different options. Legnth - I completed the story in around 10 hours with maybe 1 hour or so of idle time and another 1 hunting the remainder achievements. I imagine that this could potentially be done in half the time on a second playthrough if you already know the story. I'd hope for at least a few more hours of content for the price, if not close to double the 10 hours I ended up with. Either a longer story or just more re-playability could've given me more bang for my buck, but the discount on Kathy Rain 1 works itself out to a more reasonable price altogether in the end. Conclusion While a little short for the price, I thoroughly enjoyed every minute and certainly recommend Kathy Rain 2: Soothsayer to anyone who loves detective or point and click games. It was a great throwback to games I used to play in the 90s and a lovely change of pace from the games I typically play in 2025. A great addition to the genre and I'm looking forward to playing Kathy Rain 1 and future games from Clifftop!

I played the first Kathy Rain back in 2017, after getting it for $1 in a Humble Bundle for mobile games, and once again a few weeks ago, so I could prepare for this one. You could say that this sequel is more of the same, there are no gameplay changes and the story elements are very similar to the first game. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, I thought it was some good writing, but kinda hoped it had gone in a different direction. The puzzles were all very easy and mostly didn't take any time to figure out, I also thought the car mini-game/puzzle was extremely unnecessary and cringeworthy, so the puzzles are definitely a low point for me. Overall, I enjoyed it and would recommend the game to point-and-click adventure fans. There isn't really anything new here for most people, but the story kept me enthralled for 6.5 hours (about an hour longer than the first game), so that's good enough for me.

I never lost hope. The pixel art is way better, the music — once again composed by Daniel Kobylarz — is still absolutely wonderful. There’s a ton of reading, a lot of clicking, and a huge cast of characters and locations to explore. It’s a sequel that every fan of the original Kathy Rain should definitely try! I’m having an amazing time so far — Kathy Rain is back, baby!
