I thought Halo CE and Minecraft and the 1985 Mario Bros for NES were the pinnacle of gaming dopamine maximization UNTIL I saw this weird, old indie game on sale for $4 on Steam this summer. And let me tell you, this here "game" will exceed every expectation you've ever had about a game. It's fun if you're a normal person. If you are even vaguely nerdy and/or geeky, as am I, the dopamine factor increases exponentially. It isn't fun, it's genuinely AMAZING. So let me explain WHY it's so insanely awesome. Game is about a planet of friendly green space aliens (Kerbals) who want to go to space, and you are the program director for their version of NASA. It's decently realistic- but what makes it so addictive is the endless dopamine loop of assembling a rocket, launching it, blowing up, mashing REVERT TO LAUNCH and trying again, becuase for some reason you MUST by any means get your ship into orbit or you will be up all night wishing you had. You will lie awake calculating Perapisis and Apopasis and you'll slack off at your job imagining how your next Minmus probe should look and if it will have enough Delta-V. You will have the most fun you have ever had playing a video game, IF and only IF you can get through the first 10 hours in which the learning curve is way too steep. Ask ChatGPT for help with stuff, it worked great. The game is certainly worth picking up AT FULL PRICE, despite it being old, as I will explain henceforth: MODS: While the stock game is insanely fun, as I have stated, there's this swell free tool called CKAN (Comprehesive Kerbal Archive Network) that makes it very easy to install mods with. And the modding community has done such a great job- I play with 87 mods installed. No kidding. The great thing about the mods in terms of graphics is that if you have an old potato laptop you can still run the game and have a blast, but if you have a fancy modern PC you can install mods like Deferred and EVE and such that literally make the graphics for this look like a 2022 AAA game instead of a 2015 indie game, and the difference there is HUGE. There's also a ton of insane mods that open up more planets to visit, more parts for ships, ect. So as soon as you get this, ask an AI what mods you should download via CKAN. They're all free and, like Minecraft, add so much content the game never gets old. Want a fighter jet? No need to buy a DLC, there's like 50 free fighter jet mods. Finally, this game is very family-friendly, has no language or questionable content, and is super super educational. I knew nothing about rocket science until 4 months ago, and now I know probably more than 95% of lay people. Learning can be fun. Please buy this game. And please don't buy KSP 2, it says it's in early access but the devs went out of business and the game is an unfinished cashgrab.

Steam Review: 10/10 – I Launched More Than Rockets Sometimes, it's not about escaping gravity — it's about escaping yourself. Years ago, I bought Kerbal Space Program during a sale, thinking it’d just be another fun game about rockets and explosions. I had no idea it would carry me through the darkest time of my life. Back then, I was lost. A series of personal losses had left me numb. I stopped talking to friends. Days blended together. I didn’t want to wake up — not because I wanted to die, but because I didn’t know how to live anymore. Then I launched my first rocket. It failed. Spectacularly. But in that failure, something sparked. I wanted to try again. I tweaked a fuel tank, adjusted a trajectory. Failed again. And again. And then… orbit. It was beautiful. Every launch became a tiny goal. Every failed mission, a lesson. I wasn't just building ships — I was rebuilding myself, one part at a time. Jebediah wasn’t just a smiling green astronaut — he was my first friend in months. I remember the first time I landed on the Mun. I sat there for ten full minutes, just watching the stars in silence. I cried. Not because I was sad — but because, for the first time in a long time, I felt something. Now, years later, life is better. I’ve made peace with my past. I’m studying aerospace engineering. I even built a real rocket once — not very good, but it didn’t explode. Progress. Kerbal Space Program didn’t just teach me about space. It taught me patience. Persistence. Hope. In the vacuum of space, there is no sound. But somehow, this game helped me find my voice again.

- Bought the game - Built rocket - Rocket is success, but the pod blew up on contact with the ground - Launch mission to the North Pole with all my Kerbals in it. - Plane engines blow up on arrival. - Kerbals are stranded there. - I sent 10 planes to help them, but each and every one blew up or ran out of fuel. - After 7+ hours of sending rescue mission to help them, FINALLY one of the planes make it to them and rescue a survivor of one of the failed rescue missions on the way there. -Complete the main rescue mission and pick up all of the Kerbans. -There are still 2 other Kerbans out there in the Tundra because I'm too lazy to rescue them. 10/10 game, would kill 11 Kerbans whilst on a rescue mission again.

playing this game is by far the best way to intuitively understand orbital mechanics. it also was a big inspiration for me personally. I went to work in the aerospace industry partly because of this game, and have worked on 4 satellites and a launch vehicle professionally.
