Kingdom of the Dead is a charming and very fun game. Reminds of an old gem I used to play called Death Illustrated, which was also a monochromatic FPS. There's a major flaw which is that the UI isn't the best, and it's a bit unclear how to do anything. It seems like there was an attempt at innovation or laziness. Unknowingly, I entered survival mode before realising there even was a campaign with a difficulty selection, and I was growing frustrated with the whole game. I don't think the office (level 0) is a good idea and regular, basic, main menu would've worked much better. Additionally, interactions are either automatic or area-based, which I found very unusual and it takes away from the player's agency. I would've preferred to have a basic interaction button, with an interaction highlight.

First off if you like indy and small developmental teams that create games, I'm sure Kingdom of the Dead (KotD) will fit the bill. I'm giving KotD a thumbs up because it is worth it for the $14.99 price tag and an even better deal if it's on sale! I'm going to be a little more critical of KotD than I normally would only because there are a literal F-ton of indy FPS's to compare it to. Let's get down to it! Pros * Completely unique art style, apparently all the animation is hand drawn. I dig it and find it a breath of fresh air for the genre. It certainly gives everything an uneasy and eerie feel. * The music is great, it really adds to the environment and gives it an extra freaky vibe. I do wish there were a few more soundtracks per map though * The enemies look unique and creepy, most are humonoid-ish, most things are weak to headshots Cons * Noticed some bugs where enemies would be stuck in walls, mountains and other things. This was especially annoying when those enemies spawned other enemies and you couldn't get rid of them because they were glitched * I spoiled by games like DOOM and Duke Nukem, KotD suffers from a real lack of weapon variety as well enemy variety * Speaking of weapons, it was disappointing that weapons don't carry over from the previous mission. Each map you have to go find the same weapons again. Your health is the same way, you collect hearts similar to Zelda which increases your HP and each time it's reset at beginning of the next map. Also, the last weapon you find in each map has a tendency to show up at the very end of the level, which stinks because you barely get to use it. * Why in the world is the double barrel shotgun so awful?! It's not a sawed-off so it should have better accuracy with less scatter. I think it's possible the dev might have confused the two shotgun modifications. * Not a fan of only being able to save at checkpoints * The boss fights are a let down, most are move, point and shoot I'm aware there are far more negatives than positives on this review, but I don't think any of the negatives ruin the experience. They are basically a wish list or a what I would have done differently bullet points (besides the bugs and glitches). I believe you'll get anywhere from 6 to 10 hours of gameplay out of KotD and that's easily worth the price tag. The creativity and hard work on this game really shine and I'm not here to blow smoke up the dev's B-hole just because it's a one man show. I single-handedly tore through Choo-Choo Charles with my scathing review so I have no problem being blunt even to small dev teams. I honestly think this was a well thought out game that could use some tuning up but even if it doesn't get that, it show's real promise for Dirigo Games.

Kingdom of the Dead, developed by Dirigo Games and published by 505 Pulse, is a bold attempt to blend classic first-person shooter gameplay with a uniquely grim visual identity. Set in a twisted world where death has begun to invade the realm of the living, players step into the role of Agent Chamberlain, a former professor now working for a secret government program known as GATEKEEPER. His mission is to close the gates of death that are allowing monstrous creatures to pour into the world. While the narrative setup is fairly minimal, it serves its purpose: providing a backdrop for the carnage that unfolds across a variety of haunted, decaying environments. What immediately sets Kingdom of the Dead apart is its striking hand-drawn aesthetic. Rendered almost entirely in stark black and white, the game looks like a living horror comic or graphic novel, filled with thick lines, shadowy textures, and a kind of eerie visual roughness that’s rare in modern games. This artistic approach amplifies the game’s mood, reinforcing its gothic horror themes and giving every location—from abandoned mansions to forgotten military bunkers—a sense of haunted desolation. Despite the limited color palette, the world feels rich with atmosphere, and optional visual filters allow players to customize their experience further. Combined with unsettling sound design and an eerie soundtrack, the game successfully evokes a sense of dread that fits its subject matter. Mechanically, Kingdom of the Dead is a throwback to the golden era of 90s shooters. Movement is fast, strafing is critical, and enemies come at you in numbers that demand constant motion and awareness. The arsenal includes a satisfying selection of eight weapons, each serving different combat needs—from close-range shotguns to long-range rifles. The game doesn’t rely on regenerating health or cover systems; instead, it leans on traditional health and ammo pickups, demanding a more aggressive and kinetic playstyle. The gunplay, while solid, can at times feel slightly weightless. Weapons don't always convey a strong sense of impact, which can diminish the otherwise intense combat scenarios. Level design is another area where the game walks a fine line. Each mission is set in a distinct location, often rooted in real-world American East Coast environments but twisted with supernatural decay. The layouts encourage exploration, with hidden paths, optional objectives, and secrets that reward those willing to stray from the main route. However, many levels can feel structurally similar once you've played a few. Objectives mostly involve fighting your way to the Gate of Death and destroying it, with optional goals like rescuing civilians or collecting hidden items. These secondary tasks help vary the pacing, but they don’t fundamentally change the gameplay loop, which is often a matter of clearing waves of enemies, picking up ammo, and pressing forward to the next arena. Enemy variety is respectable, with more than twenty types of foes, including flying horrors, armored skeletons, and grotesque beasts. Each enemy type poses different challenges, and the game is at its best when it throws mixed groups at the player, forcing rapid prioritization. Boss encounters, while visually striking, sometimes fall short in terms of mechanics. They tend to rely on large health pools and basic attack patterns, making them more about patience than skillful engagement. On normal difficulty, the challenge is moderate, but higher difficulty levels introduce tougher enemies and more punishing resource scarcity, which can make the game feel more tactical and less of a run-and-gun experience. Despite its strengths, Kingdom of the Dead suffers from technical roughness that can pull players out of its otherwise immersive experience. There have been reports of bugs such as AI pathing issues, audio glitches, and environmental clipping. Some players have encountered progress-blocking bugs or needed to restart levels due to soft locks. While these problems aren’t universal and many have been addressed through patches, they point to a lack of polish that holds the game back from reaching its full potential. For an indie title of this scale, some rough edges are expected, but it’s important for players to be aware that performance may vary depending on their system and playstyle. Replayability is modest but present. The inclusion of multiple difficulty levels, hidden content, and an endless wave mode adds some incentive to revisit levels or experiment with different weapon strategies. The game isn’t long—most players will finish the main campaign in about four to five hours—but it doesn’t overstay its welcome. For those who appreciate old-school shooters and want something stylistically unique, the game delivers enough content to justify its price point. Its compact size also works in its favor, presenting a focused experience that can be played over a weekend rather than requiring a long-term investment. In the end, Kingdom of the Dead is a stylish and ambitious shooter that embraces the sensibilities of retro FPS games while adding its own artistic flair. Its strongest feature is undoubtedly its atmosphere, supported by a hand-drawn visual style that is both beautiful and unsettling. The gameplay is fast and familiar, delivering the kind of twitchy, relentless combat that fans of classic shooters crave. Yet, it's held back by its technical instability, occasionally shallow mechanics, and limited variety in mission structure. For those willing to overlook these flaws, there's a unique and memorable experience here—one that stands out in the crowded indie FPS space by fully committing to its horror aesthetic and old-school roots. game seems basic , i know read its only a solo dev made that game so i will say positive and negative story is good and basic - weapons are good - map design are good so far . negative : enemy bodies are 100% shouldn't block your movement and enemies too. enemies seems to be slow to shoot or react when you near except melee monster some 2 or 1 map has simple issue some places like grave yard is so dark so you have to use brightness . achievements is works but need to close the game so you can get them. when you die , you lose ammo on all weapons with 30 bullets each except dynamite . movements feels off and need some improvements. i would gave this game on 6 or 7 out of 10 .
