This game probably doesn't need another positive review, but here I go anyway. It is simple and repetitive. Some mechanics are completely unclear unless you just try stuff, and some mechanics are unclear even if you try stuff or try stuff at a wrong time. I wasn't sure how some things work until I've read it in a guide (when I was just looking for an easier way to customize your heraldry). You can't really lose, not for good anyway. But none of it matters, it's a joy to play. I'm in my 3rd playthrough and I still enjoy it. To be fair 1st was the base campaign, then the shogun variant and now dead lands - but all of it is more or less a reskin with some additional sprinkle on it. Hell, I even consider buying the other two DLCs despite their mixed reception.
PROS + Beautiful pixel art and atmospheric environments. + Satisfying kingdom-building and resource management. + Great variety of mounts, units, and unlockable abilities. + Strong sense of progression as your kingdom develops. + Co-op adds a fun strategic layer. + Excellent atmosphere with fitting music and sound design. CONS - Some mechanics are poorly explained and difficult to understand. - Progression can feel slow at times. - Backtracking between areas can become tedious. - Some tasks become repetitive during longer sessions. - Losing progress can be frustrating, especially when learning the game. VERDICT Coming from Kingdom: New Lands, I think Two Crowns feels like a much bigger and more ambitious version of the formula. New Lands felt simpler and more straightforward, while Two Crowns gives you much more to discover and experiment with. There are more things to unlock, more ways to approach your kingdom, and a greater sense that you're actually going on a journey rather than simply surviving from one island to another. At the same time, I don't think bigger automatically means better in every aspect. New Lands had a certain simplicity that made its gameplay immediately understandable, while Two Crowns sometimes makes you wonder what you're actually supposed to do or how certain mechanics work. It took me more time to understand what the game was offering. Still, once everything starts clicking, Two Crowns feels like the more complete experience. It expands the original formula without losing the satisfying feeling of slowly building something from almost nothing. I personally enjoyed seeing how much the series had grown from New Lands. 4/5
★★★★★ After 500+ hours, I can honestly say that Kingdom Two Crowns is one of my favorite games of all time. I've been coming back to it for years, and it never gets old. Every DLC is fantastic in its own way and adds something special to the experience. The atmosphere, music, art style, exploration, and gameplay all come together perfectly. It's the perfect game when you want to relax, especially in co-op. Few games have kept me entertained for this long while still making me excited to start a new campaign. Thank you to everyone who worked on this masterpiece. And please... I'm still not ready to retire my crown. 👑
