🏰 A Lovely Little Kingdom... Until That Damned Dragon Turns Up Becastled is one of those games where I can understand some of the criticism it receives, while also thinking that some of it is considerably harsher than my own experience deserves. At its heart, this is a mixture of city building, resource management and defence. During the quieter periods you're expanding your settlement, gathering what you need, putting people to work and trying to create something capable of surviving what comes next. Then night arrives and the game gets to find out whether all of your careful planning was actually any good. I really enjoy that combination. There's something satisfying about watching a little settlement grow while knowing that you're not simply building for the sake of making something pretty. Walls, towers, troop positions and the shape of your settlement matter because sooner or later something is going to come along and try to knock it all down. And sometimes that something is a damned dragon. 🐉 I still remember one of my early games where I'd gone through the tutorial, felt reasonably confident that I understood what I was doing and was happily getting on with building my kingdom. Then the dragon arrived. What had taken me a considerable amount of time to build disappeared so quickly that I barely had time to appreciate exactly how doomed I was. It was less of a battle and more of a very short demonstration of why medieval property insurance would have been an excellent idea. That does highlight one of my criticisms of Becastled, though. Even on the easiest difficulty setting, the difficulty curve can become surprisingly extreme during the later stages of a mission. I don't mind a game becoming more challenging as it progresses, but there were occasions where the jump felt considerably sharper than I expected. The pathfinding can also be questionable at times. When you're relying on units to get where you need them during an attack, watching them make a less-than-brilliant decision isn't ideal. Becastled isn't an unplayable mess by any stretch, but there are enough rough edges that I occasionally found myself wishing certain parts had received another layer of polish. And that's where price becomes important for me. At full price, I think it's reasonable to expect a little more polish than Becastled currently offers. The underlying game is enjoyable, the building and defence loop works for me and I can easily see myself putting quite a few more hours into it over time, but some of those rougher edges become harder to overlook when you're paying the full asking price. Pick it up during a decent sale, however, and my feelings are much more positive. There's a genuinely enjoyable game here. I like building my settlement, I like preparing for the attacks, and I like discovering that the wonderful defensive plan I had in my head perhaps wasn't quite as wonderful once several angry creatures started testing it. So would I recommend Becastled? 👍 Yes, with a caveat. If you enjoy city building mixed with defensive strategy and can find Becastled at a good sale price, I think it's well worth a look. At full price, I'd personally wait for a discount unless the concept particularly appeals to you. Just don't become too emotionally attached to your first few kingdoms. The dragon certainly won't be.
I started playing the game while it was still in development, long before it had all the features it has now. This is a game for people that like castles, castle defense, and building the perfect defense line. It has enough content to keep you interested for at least 2 full games (about 6+ hours each). I highly recommend you try out the map editor to create something you might like playing. This would add at least 2 more games to your total playthrough before you get bored and take a break for a few years.
i realize you can beautify your village into a town into a fortress or how ever you want to set things up for to get happiness high and keep it high so your spawn rates stay high and you have high reactivity for new assignments for your citizens,, but if they added more layers to making a point to beautifying it like traffic of workers. make a real reason to build roads to connect buildings.. i used to use roads but dont anymore there is NO point i just STACK the buildings as close to gether as possible and even churches next to each other ... the game doesnt care then i do not care.
