Stronghold is a classic RTS of yesteryear. Unlike a lot of its contemporaries like Age of Empires or Starcraft it's based more on building a balanced economy alongside a military force. The focus of the game is around developing what your citizenry needs (food, shelter, religion etc) and then after doing that being able to then create your military and conquer the enemy. This balance of economics and military strategy is really fun and engaging and creates this core game loop that on paper shouldn't work but somehow does. Part of that is so much of the game feels automated for you. Like you don't need to micromanage what your citizens do. The main thing you end up doing minute by minute is just building new farms, spawning new units and attacking the enemy when they invade. The rest is done for you. At the same time I really wish the game telegraphed what exactly you need to do more. One thing I dislike for example is it's not readily obvious how many bakeries you need for mills, and you end up stockpiling a lot of flour and not delivering enough bread. I kind of wish the game would just tell me "hey build more bakeries" or "hey you should probably spawn more archers". I understand that it would probably be annoying to veteran players but I think if they added more stuff like that it would've made the game even better for new players. This release of Stronghold is the Definitive Edition and it's really good. It fixes basically all of the problems with the original game and runs really slick. At the same time they didn't add a skirmish mode. Which felt very badly needed, as the missions felt overly scripted. Once you complete all of the missions there isn't a lot of replayability outside of multiplayer. But aside from that, Stronghold is a solid RTS with a steeper than I'd like learning curve and if you like the setting it's a no brainer to try out.

It took me 20 years to find this game again. I played it when I was 7 or 8 years old on my Uncles computer. I just recently, in my late 20s, found it. GREAT game.

We lost something along the way. This is how great games were made. How come these days with all the resources developers have at their disposal they can not replicate this sort of magic game play. New games are now all about challenge, back when games like this were made it was all about fun. It makes me sad to think of what we lost but at least with remakes like this we can go back in time and play real game made to be enjoyed.

Simply Stronghold for modern PCs. Awesome and worth the money. The DLC campaigns are a bit of mixed bag depending on what you like about Stronghold - too much "reach-the-flag" for my taste but the Swine DLC was fun. PS: Regarding Skirmish mode (the one where multiple AI players are placed on the map with you) - this mode never existed in the original Stronghold, it was introduced in Crusaders. Of course it would have been great to have it but this game never claimed to add it afaik. So I don't see it as a reason to down-vote.

I'm what most would consider a newbie to RTS games. I missed the early 2000's RTS classics. That being said, I loved playing through this game's various campaigns and the two Siege Trails. The narrated campaigns were fun, and while the story was there just to give some flavour to the game, it was enjoyable enough to follow. Unfortunately this game doesn't have skirmish mode, which severely limits the replayability in my opinion. After playing through the campaigns and trails (All of which I really enjoyed, by the way), you are left with Invasions, Sieges and Economic missions, none of which really feel worth putting any time into in my opinion, unless you REALLY enjoy doing those for the sake of playing. There is the map / scenartio editor though, so if you're so inclined, you can do all sorts of cool levels there, probably even something that goes far beyond any Skirmish game mode. Even with that said, however, this game is worth every penny! I put 100 hours into the campaigns + DLC and the two Trails, so you get a nice amount of game to play for the price.
