Only played a few hours and I can already tell this has more heart and soul put into it than almost any other SNES JRPG homage I've played in the last decade

Okay, so I've put roughly 26 hours into the game so far and I'm in the 4th and final Act with the option to approach the final dungeon or do side quests first. I haven't beaten the game, but I think I've played more than enough to give an opinion. I play RPGs for the combat system, period the end. Most stories aren't that special and I feel like they're done as an obligation to those who like the genre. The setting is different, I'll give it that, but the story told here is one you'll be very familiar with. As for the combat itself, the game's main flaw is that it just doesn't seem to evolve. What you get in the first act is very much what you'll get for the rest of the game. The battles are grid-based and so there's magic that can affect tiles for area-of-effect damage or amplifying damage done, so every now and then you'll have to move your character. That's pretty much it. The one time I struggled was on Octoplug because it was multiple enemies that all did area of effect damage that altered titles. That became instantly solved when I grinded for just two battles to get the next level up and got a lightning ability. The boss fight became a cakewalk, done in three turns. No other boss battle rose to that level of difficulty. I think I got just one game over after that fighting an optional superboss with Dustin, and it was almost just as rare for party members to even get knocked out. This makes the combat a complete chore by Act III when you get a taste of what's to come with how absolutely spongey the bosses become. The battles just go in circles for ten minutes. With the one mutant boss, it had to be like fifteen or twenty minutes. I think what surprised me most was that the timing for every enemy with a direct attack is the exact same, whether they charge or hop on the player. The way a garbage bag enemy hops is exactly the same as a late game enemy. But you've gotten the timing down at that point so there's no fun in trying to figure out a new enemy. There are elemental weaknesses, sure, but if you play like I did and just dump every single party member's +1 stat bonus for each level up into skill, that won't be a problem. Or even standard attacks, really. You could make it go by faster by using magic, but in this game it can be hard to come by at times and your amount of magic carries over from one party to another at different points in the story. The only ways to get magic back is by draining it (only two of six party members have that ability), breaking objects open (2/6 can do this), or by using restoring items (expensive and hard to come by). So often times using offensive magic just isn't worth it, especially when healing is more important. Another BIG flaw to this game is the issues that come with platforming. I respect the idea, and for the most part it works okay, but the fact that the game has an "unstuck" option when you select file in the menu speaks volumes about how much difficulty the team must have been having with how the terrain is layered and overlaps. I had my character get stuck a few times, fall into the abyss off a cliff, or items like clips or other objects would be displayed at the wrong position and depth. The Toy Mine in Act III was a nightmare, I'd make a jump and only to miss and then my character would rapidly fall in the same spot multiple times in a row and lose a lot of health. I feel like these issues extend to doors, too. So many doors that don't open or don't go anywhere, even ones that are open. Even a few that were in dungeons. Was it a glitch? Was it actually supposed to lead to another room? Who knows. But it gets bad in the second half of the game. Another honorable mention goes to the part where Lute has to grapple on the Table Top late in Act III, getting to the window was confusing and I feel like I only got in the right spot to grapple to it by a fluke. Act III in general was a LOT of walking around big, mostly empty rooms in towns, fields, and dungeons alike. And the constant slow dragging of the world map between one scenario and another was agony. I counted twenty-six seconds for one transition as it went back to the ship on the Red Wine River. The pacing in the first two acts felt tighter than that, so I understand what another person said when they said the game felt front-loaded. However, I have yet to do the side quests for Act IV, so I can't quite agree with that just yet. For the presentation, no real complaints. Music's solid, there's some great boss themes in here. The graphics had effort put into them, especially for the bosses and their attack animations. Although I couldn't help but notice some character portraits, particularly for NPCs, look a little less polished than supporting and main characters. In that case I would have done what most old school RPGs did and just not have the portraits at all for NPCs. It gives me no satisfaction in pointing out the flaws of an independent game that I know was a six year effort at least. The backstory behind this game's production is arguably more fascinating than the story in the game, and I'm glad they were able to bring this project to completion when I know of others that didn't make it. I'm going to recommend this game, but not without some major caveats that I mentioned. Here's to hoping the team can iron out some more kinks as they get more feedback and time, and congrats on the release.

This game is if Earthbound, Super Mario RPG, and a tactics RPG had a trash-filled baby. It has charm. It has TRASH. It has SO much love put into it. Buy this game if you are a SNES RPG enthusiast. Buy this game if you are an indie RPG enthusiast. And embrace the trash.

I won't review the game itself yet and I'll edit this review as soon as I finish the game. I just wanna make sure that people know the devs are doing their absolute best, as I asked to fix the offline mode on the deck to be able to play on the go as I don't have time to play at home and not only for my surprise they answered me, assuring it would be on the next update, the update came and now it really works. Just wanna let you guys all my support, the game looks amazing and ya'll seem extremely nice 😊 Thank you and continue the good work ☺️
