King's Bounty: The Legend has made its way into maybe one of my favourite games of all time. The premise is simple. You are a treasure searcher for the king, and go out into the world, building your army, solving problems, and fighting stacks of enemies in turn based grid combat, much like Heroes of Might and Magic, but with real time world exploration in a single player campaign. There are many different unit types to choose from, from Pirates and Peasants, to Demons and Dragons, and a wide array of items to collect and strengthen not only your character, but different unit types too. Part of what makes that fun is that unit placements and item spawns are randomised a little each game, so you may not be able to buy a stack of Demons or Necromancers in the same place or even same quantity between different games. While there are many quests along the way, and different realms to explore, the main focus is on combat. You will be fighting a lot, and it's not unfair to say that it can get repetitive. However, I think due to the above randomness, limited availability of units, and sometimes tough fights that can whittle down your army, I think there's enough variety to keep you going if you really can get into the turn based gameplay. The music is memorable, and so are the locations, and it's all presented with a charming cartoon miniature sort of aesthetic. Like if Warcraft 3 was brighter, and had somewhat larger and better looking models. The game can be quite tough from the beginning when you're just figuring it out, but once you understand the underlying stats, strengths and weaknesses, unit placements to better deal damage or avoid it, and manage your resources like mana and rage, you can eventually breeze through tougher and tougher fights. There are some tougher fights towards the end, and at certain points mid game, but it's nothing a different unit composition and/or levels and gear can't overcome. Overall, I'd say give it a look if you're into turn based RPGs. If you can deal with the combat and not get bored, then you'll have a game that will last you a long time for even one run, and maybe have something you can come back to for a different challenge after the first playthrough

As a native russian speaker, this game has a lot better feel in russian language, than it has in english (and I would usually vomit, rather than admit anything good about russian culture, because how I grew to despise it) Anyway, I think many would agree that this is a legendary game nonetheless. Perhaps a tedious slog, perhaps repetitive, yes, you might not have the patience to finish it, espesially on the impossible difficulty, but the game's general feel and atmosphere is something that just settles in your heart deeply as a fairy tale, maybe naive, maybe stupid, maybe you are causing a mass genocide under the disguise of an epic beautiful tale, beautiful music and graphics. But I don't know, I might not want to play it often, but I think it is one of the greatest games of all times.

I first played this game when I was 9 or 10. Found it being sold in a random supermarket and picked it up, I remember begging my mom to let me get it. It was my first experience with RPGs, and turn-based combat. This game is still amazing to me! The story, the characters, the MUSIC--GOD, the soundtrack is BEAUTIFUL. Lind Erebros is so, SO underrated for this. It might be one of my favorite games ever.

My modest disappointment with King's Bounty II caused me to abruptly stop playing it and begin a replay of all the previous reboots of the original 1990 game; King's Bounty: The Legend from 2008 was the first of four full titles and two expansion packs in a series that basically stayed between good and great for the entire run. My personal bias is that I always found the Heroes of Might & Magic series to be, like, FINE, but as a lifelong CRPG fanatic I find "you are a single person with an army" much more appealing than "you are an unseen godlike figure managing a kingdom and heroes and armies." The compelling gameplay loop of both kinds of game is similar, though; amassing comical numbers of fantasy troops and slowly defeating enemy armies across dozens of maps. In King's Bounty: The Legend, the framing devices for the plot progression sees your hero thrust into a series of dramatic invasions, kidnappings, double-crosses, and exorcisms, as your character's power also grows (though that power is ultimately only in service of managing your army). The battle screens will be familiar to just about anybody who has played any kind of strategy game surely; CRPG fans might recognize Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous almost certainly lifting its crusade mode directly from either this or Heroes of Might & Magic (or both?), which is perhaps part of why I loved that part of the game while some CRPG fanatics could not stand it. But yes, the tactical combat is one of those "easy to learn, difficult to master" kind of ordeals; after a few hours you will probably feel like you have a good idea of how to win fights, but the juxtaposition of straightforward army tactics to the "Spirits of Rage" mechanics and the spellbook (with each of the three character classes excelling with one of those three methods of fighting) lead to a great deal of potential tactics, even if I imagine the real pros only have a very small range of troops and spells and such that they use to beat the game effortlessly. BUT the cool thing is how fun it is to experiment with different army compositions and spells and even rage spirits; this playthrough is the first time I remember really focusing on creating obstacles on the battlefield, and it was amazing how well it worked to stop enemy melee troops from getting to me for three or four rounds, by which point the battle was almost over from my archers and spells. Anyway, just play the game already; if you ignore the original game, King's Bounty: The Legend is probably second-best title after King's Bounty: Crossworlds, and is a great place to start playing King's Bounty since all the major elements of the game past and future are present here, and if you enjoy playing this you will probably enjoy all the rest, and if you do not enjoy it I have no idea what might appeal to you about any of the others.
