March 2026
Almost four years later, I finally went out of my way to finish this, so now I have thoughts I need to write down. As the youtuber Nerrel phrases it; Welcome to an episode of "Too late, who gives a ♥♥♥♥?" Klonoa was never a very popular series, so anything that gets more people to play them is good! However, this repackage is a bittersweet gift for hardcore fans that I will begrudgingly recommend on the quality of the games alone. I believe that the new coat of paint dampens the presentation a bit and makes 'Phantasy Reverie' an inferior experience than their original PS1 & PS2 versions. The gameplay is mostly similar, but if you're a Klonoa fan, let's be real for a second; these games are simple. They are indeed fun but they're extremely basic in their mechanics. They become more than the sum of their parts when you combine together the art of the world, the music and the surprisingly poignant story moments, so my criticisms stem from the ways this detracts from those better qualities. My problem with the facelift really comes down to inconsistency. This remaster brings an update to the visuals in the form of higher resolution 3D models, textures, real lighting and HD menu & HUD icons...but there's *nothing* in terms of audio. So, with the new Klonoa 1 you have this really crisp, modern-looking game using compressed character dialog from 1997 that was originally played through a 320x240 render on your CRT from character sprites. This is much less noticeable with Klonoa 2 since it was upgraded from CD to DVD, but 2 comes with it's own problems. Klonoa 2 is now 25 years old and it's early launch window PS2 animations look extremely stiff & unnatural on the new assets. When you play the originals, all of these lesser elements just fit perfectly into place like a comfy, cozy, cohesive blanket because they look and sound like the developers did the absolute best that they could do with the hardware at the time, but the new visuals here just make it all jarringly disjointed enough to knock it down a couple of points. Don't get me wrong, the new visuals are very nice looking, especially when it comes to the level environments which often times look better, but Klonoa is just a cute little guy and they really scuffed him (and others) when you have to look at his talking face up close. Compare that to how the OG PS1 Klonoa had these really beautiful, pre-rendered video cutscenes that are just gone now. So, now this acceptable-but-still-imperfect collection is the most accessible way to play these almost-30-year-old games. If you're a Klonoa fan and you've always wanted to make your friends play them, then congrats because Phantasy Reverie is going to be how they do it now...unless you REALLY expect them to download, setup and run a PS1 & PS2 emulator (and even then, it's my understanding that Klonoa 2 still doesn't emulate well.) Hell, they actually sold the original version of 1 on the PS3 online store for just $6 dollars; it'd be nice if we could get that. For everyone that isn't already a Klonoa fan: if you have an appreciation for retro games, please, PLEASE consider finding a way to play the originals, but if simply buying and playing it off Steam is going to be the way you do it, then go ahead. Lastly, $40 dollars is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ridiculous price. Wait for a sale.

It's literally Klonoa. What more can I say? Recommended to be played with some mods though: K1/DTP 1:1 Script (for the original script of the PS1 game, Door to Phantomile (DTP)) K1/DTP Music/SFX loop fixes (The music is looped incorrectly in the unmodded version of Phantasy Reverie) SettingsFix and Restore Blend Shape Animations for Klonoa 2 (Lunatea's Veil) K1/DTP PS1 Voice (Restores the original HQ voice clips for Klonoa in the action sequences. E.G. "Wahoo!" and "Manya"

Whether you're a fan of Klonoa or have never played the games, the Phantasy Reverie Series is the best way to (re)play the first two titles. The games clearly hail from a different era, one where gaming still felt new and refreshing in 9/10 of the games you tried, but the simple gameplay can now seem a bit superficial. Look beyond that, and the games will offer you an interesting challenge that's now accessible and better presented than ever. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-o7HaIeO4jo The games are true remasters: virtually nothing has changed in the gameplay or levels, except that everything has been given a modern and fresh new look, making it look much better. The additions, especially the ability to restart infinitely at a save point, are particularly welcome additions that can prevent many potential frustrations. If only we had had this during the PS1 era. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAwglKWWDhs Klonoa deserves a second chance, and thankfully, a new audience can now experience this unique gameplay. The gameplay is kept quite simple. You can run, jump, and use your magic to fire a "Wind Bullet" to inflate enemies into balloons, flinging them at other obstacles or using them as platforms for a double jump. You can even flap your ears after a jump to cover that last bit of distance. It's not particularly complex, but as you progress, the jumps and timing become much more difficult, transforming this game from a very easy, child-friendly platformer into a truly challenging one.
