The Good: Short, mostly competent adventure with nice 2D visuals, solid music, and satisfying hack-and-slash gameplay. Plenty of secrets and areas to explore. The Bad: Harsh jump physics and weak sub-weapons (especially the boomerang) make combat feel uneven. Clunky menus and confusing UI hurt usability, and you can’t return to your save after the final boss to finish leftover content. The Ugly: Overuse of vanishing platforms and spikes, no map at all, and a frustrating controller configuration system. Final Verdict: A decent, compact action game with charm, but weighed down by frustrating design choices and rough usability.

Rough Around the Edges; But Still a Great Experience Right out the gate Beholgar brings some beautiful retro visuals, atmosphere and locations to the player. It also has a handful of “cutscene” art pieces that are top notch (They should have also been viewable in some gallery after you have seen them once). However, it does suffer from occasional bugs and gameplay weirdness (More on this later). Sony DS4 wireless worked without any issues. As for the gameplay, we have a bit of an inverse difficulty curve. It is most difficult early on and gets progressively easier. Enemy variety is good enough; with some occasional trolly placements. The general control and movement can feel a bit unnatural for a while, but eventually you get into a vibe with it. Items once collected are instantly saved which creates a weird dynamic of wanting to jump into pits to fast travel to the last save campfire at times. The economy could be better as the player quickly runs out of anything useful to do with the gold collected with only a handful of meaningful upgrades available at the shop. The inventory is barebones; doesn’t keep track of most of the persistent upgrades and sometimes it malfunctions. When it bugs out it will cause the pause menu to stay up and you’ll have to force exit the game. A similar soft lock can also happen if you roll into small areas trying to explore for secrets. During exploration I ended up taking a lot of deaths due to ambiguous looking spots. These areas look like they should be explorable for some kind of hidden secret but they usually turn out to be nothing. Similarly, some death falls/pits look like secrets but they are just poorly visualized death traps. This leads into another quasi-bug where looking down doesn’t always scroll the screen down to see what is below. Progess sometimes requires backtracking and although the game has a broad macro-overview map for fast travel there is no in-game area maps. As a result, you’ll probably be full clearing zones multiple times to find/remember where one specific feature was. Overall it’s a tight compact package that delivers solid action platforming fun throughout the adventure and is well worth taking a look at.

This is a great little metroidvania game in a retro style. I had a lot of fun playing through it and mastering all the weapons and abilities. The music is really good, I especially liked it in the Witches Cemetary level. It took me about 8 hours to 100% it, so it's not long. It's a little challenging at parts but nothing too hard. I got it on sale for under 5 bucks and it's well worth it for that price.

7/10 Great graphics and music. bit difficult in some areas and a bit buggy. If you love 2D scrolling, dark fantasy type platformers then give this a go. Don't think it's worth the £6.19 price tag, but if you can pick this up on sale then go for it.

I bought this game based on the art style alone. It looked like if Frank Frazetta was a pixel artist, and in game that's exactly how it feels! Thankfully on top of that it ended up being a really fun game. The environments, characters and their animations are all really well done. And the music and sound effects are great too. I loved feeling like I was in the developer's universe. It's on the harder side for sure, but I enjoyed the difficulty. All the toughest areas have save spots close to them, so I didn't find it frustrating like some people seem to. Length wise, it's a pretty short game, which I really appreciated. With it's style and challenge it probably would have been too much if it were any longer. I beat the entire game with 100% achievements just casually playing it here and there over the course of a week. Played the entire game on Steam Deck, and it mostly looks and plays great on it. The CRT filters look especially good with the art style and the OLED display. But I did run into some bugs which I'll mention below. They were all very minor so hopefully the dev can patch it some day, and make Beholgar that much better. Bugs I remember: Setting custom controls in the menu was practically impossible with how the menu worked on Steam Deck, so I just left default controls. One time I died and was still able to move around as a blood splat (lol). There are a few spots where if you get towards the edge of the screen, the camera zoom will change. Like it's trying to set the zoom for the next screen, but you haven't actually reached the next screen yet. The spikes at the final boss got stuck in a halfway position at one point, so they were unavoidable. Other than that they were minor cosmetic things, like icons not lining up inside their containers in the inventory screen, text running outside of their dialog boxes, things like that. Overall though it was a lot of fun, and I recommend this to anyone that likes barbarians, harder games, and dark fantasy art!
