I like this game because it brings me back to old RPGs. I mean very old, like Commodore 64. I like it because it's basic. Why is it basic? 1. To make a skill effective, you usually need to put points into it every time you gain a level. This leads to your characters having only 1 skill that they always use in battle. Be prepared to consider that skill use to be a "basic attack" and to repeatedly use that attack, every battle, for the whole game. 2. The game is very grindy. I enjoy grindy. Not everyone does. 3. The format gets repetitive, especially as you approach level 30 and as you try to climb to level 40. Even as I enjoy the game, I have to take breaks because I get bored. I know this sounds like a negative review. Again, this makes me nostalgic for very old RPGs. It plays, sounds, and even looks like one. Do not expect there to be many quality of life features. Also, don't play this after playing Pen And Paper 2. You will feel limited and the interface will feel clunky.

Knights of Pen & Paper +1 is a fun and charming little RPG with plenty of good jokes and a nice tabletop vibe. The combat and character building are simple, but enjoyable if you like this kind of game. That said, it gets very grindy, especially if you’re going for 100%. The final dungeon achievement is particularly ridiculous – clearing 50 dungeons eventually just means running the same easy dungeon over and over again. Not difficult, just tedious and you usually get 5/50 in a normal playthrough. Overall, I had a good time with it, but it’s definitely a niche game and the grinding can wear you down. Worth playing if you enjoy old-school turn-based RPGs and nerdy humor, but I’d recommend picking it up on sale.

Some of the achievements are buggy, and you may find the launch option of, "./knightspp.x86_64" %command% to be helpful (include the quotation marks). There's also some grind, but it's reasonable so far to me. However, this is a fun game that's a love-letter to nerdom. Although it's rather simple thus far, it certainly isn't bad, and some times more can be less. At the price I bought it, I have zer0 regrets.

Knights of Pen and Paper +1 Edition is a refreshing take on the role-playing genre that blends classic fantasy adventures with the social experience of tabletop gaming. Developed by Behold Studios and published by Paradox Interactive, the game stands out by allowing players to manage both the fictional heroes exploring dangerous dungeons and the group of friends gathered around a gaming table. This imaginative premise immediately sets the tone for a lighthearted adventure filled with humor, nostalgia, and numerous references to traditional pen-and-paper role-playing games. Instead of taking itself too seriously, the game embraces its quirky identity, resulting in an experience that feels both familiar and surprisingly creative. One of the game's strongest features is its distinctive character creation system. Players do not simply recruit warriors, mages, or rogues; they first select the personalities of the people playing the tabletop campaign before assigning each of them a fantasy class. Every combination offers different advantages, encouraging experimentation and strategic planning before the adventure even begins. Choosing the right player traits alongside complementary character classes creates a satisfying layer of customization that rewards thoughtful party building. This clever mechanic also reinforces the game's humorous theme, as every decision reflects the personalities sitting around the table rather than just the heroes inside the fictional world. Combat follows a traditional turn-based formula inspired by classic role-playing games, but it remains engaging thanks to its tactical depth and unusual risk-reward mechanics. Players can influence encounters by deciding how challenging they want battles to be, increasing enemy strength in exchange for greater experience points and better rewards. This system gives players more control over progression while making grinding feel more deliberate than repetitive. Success depends on effective teamwork, proper use of class abilities, status effects, and careful resource management rather than relying solely on powerful equipment. As the campaign progresses, tougher encounters demand increasingly thoughtful strategies, making victories feel well earned. Beyond combat, the game offers a rewarding progression system packed with quests, equipment upgrades, crafting opportunities, enchanting, mining, and various ways to strengthen the party. Completing missions unlocks new locations, tougher monsters, and increasingly valuable treasures that maintain a satisfying sense of momentum throughout the adventure. While exploration itself is relatively straightforward compared to large open-world RPGs, the steady stream of new objectives and customization options keeps players invested. Collecting resources, improving gear, and experimenting with different character builds adds welcome variety that complements the main storyline. Visually, Knights of Pen and Paper +1 Edition captures the spirit of classic 16-bit RPGs through colorful pixel art and charming animations. Every environment, monster, and character is designed with nostalgia in mind, successfully recreating the atmosphere of retro role-playing games while maintaining its own identity. The game's presentation constantly reminds players that they are watching both the fantasy campaign and the players enjoying it around a table, creating amusing visual moments that reinforce the unique concept. The soundtrack also complements the experience well, delivering upbeat fantasy melodies that fit the game's playful tone without becoming repetitive. The writing is another highlight, filled with witty dialogue, self-aware jokes, and countless references to tabletop gaming culture. Dungeon masters, dice rolls, character stereotypes, and familiar fantasy tropes are woven naturally into conversations, creating humor that feels genuine rather than forced. Longtime tabletop enthusiasts will appreciate many of the subtle references, while newcomers can still enjoy the comedic interactions and accessible storytelling. The narrative never loses sight of its entertaining premise, making even routine quests feel more memorable through clever dialogue and playful scenarios. Despite its many strengths, the game is not entirely free from shortcomings. Combat can become repetitive during longer sessions, especially when farming resources or revisiting familiar locations. Some progression milestones require additional grinding, which may slow the pacing for players eager to advance the story. The simplified maps and limited exploration may also disappoint those looking for expansive worlds or highly cinematic storytelling. Nevertheless, these issues are relatively minor because the game's engaging progression systems, customization options, and consistently entertaining presentation keep the overall experience enjoyable. Knights of Pen and Paper +1 Edition succeeds because it understands the appeal of tabletop role-playing beyond dice rolls and statistics. It celebrates imagination, friendship, creativity, and collaborative storytelling while delivering a satisfying retro-inspired RPG filled with tactical combat, rewarding progression, and memorable humor. Its inventive premise elevates what could have been a standard pixel-art adventure into something genuinely distinctive. Whether you're an experienced tabletop gamer or simply someone who appreciates old-school RPGs with personality, the game offers a charming and highly enjoyable journey that remains easy to recommend.
