I originally dismissed this game as a Danganronpa knock-off, while it's true that this game shares many similarities with the original series, there are several choices made in the gameplay loop and the first chapter that help to set Kumitantei apart. After the first chapter, I had to lay on the ground and just think about what I had witnessed. The storytelling is immaculate and I cannot wait for Chapter 2 and onwards to come out. Do yourself a favor and buy this game now while it is still pretty inexpensive.
If Capcom U.S.A. Inc. v. Data East Corp (the lawsuit) had gone in favor of Capcom, this game would not exist. They said it was "inspired" by Danganronpa. Bollocks. This is a note-for-note RIP OFF. Several characters are recognizably there, just with a few fundamental changes to keep Spike Chunsoft's lawyers at bay. There are clear analogues to Monokuma (I could swear they even got the same VA), the Ultimates, the Class Trial, and the executions. They have something that's Hangman's Gambit But Worse. They have the S-Link thing. A lot of the music is very similar in composition. The "make a comic" thing at the end of the trial is so identical to the ones in DR that they don't even give you instructions on how to do it. The fact that they put Kodaka in the Special Thanks SECOND after Rumiko Takahashi is quite frankly taking the p*ss, HAVING SAID ALL THAT, I enjoyed it. What it does differently is generally done better. They didn't have to set it in Japan or in the 1980s, because the developers are clearly from neither. It's painted-over Danganronpa, but the paint is mostly pretty.
I've had a certain itch while waiting for danganronpa 2x2. This fills this void perfectly right now. By far the most high quality danganronpa-like game on the market right now. It does feel too danganronpa though, but that's why I bought the game in the first place. 8/10. I see a lot of potential in this. I love the card battling mechanic.
After the sad downfall of Eden garden, i have to say this is honestly one of the best dangan inspired games i have played in a long time, the cast is so loveable they have really decent motives and personalities that makes you attached to them and it leaves you questioning who will die, the artstyle and music is very well done as well, the voice acting is something i was shocked by the sheer effort and love they put into their roles is very amazing and sold the immersion for me, i can't wait for the next episodes i highly recommend any danganronpa lovers to check this out its worth the 15 for just the first ep alone.
It is very hard to commend this game without noting that it feels like another Fanganronpa with a price tag to it. With that being said, I just finished episode 1 in a single sitting and did very much enjoy it, notably its music actually blew me away. Some of the tracks are incredible but the game by defaults drops the music so low to barely be noticed which is a shame. The voice acting while only supporting English I initially thought some performances were great while some others were flat, was so wrong. By the end of episode 1 some of the voice work is really remarkable. The game is very tropey but if you’ve enjoyed Danganronpa in the past you will enjoy this. Definitely just read the tutorials for the mini games as not understanding especially card battles and comisodors will stagnate the trial dramatically. I’m yet to see the bad ending to the trial but the premise that there are multiple routes through a trial is super exciting and leaves me hopeful. It is a bit unfortunate that there is no announced release dates for further chapters yet. I’m not as wary of this but given its similarities to Fanganronpa’s typically cancelling before reaching their climaxes I do have concerns but I hope the fact it is on steam and a published ready to purchase game that this will not be the case. Also the game initially was unplayable with uncapped frame rate and no vsync, upon entering first person exploration the screen was blank.
