Like a Dragon Gaiden is just the localized title that was given to this game, the name in Japanese roughly translates to "Yakuza 7 Side Story". As this suggests, this game's story takes place parallel to that of Y7's. Once again we are in control of Kazuma Kiryu, which following the ending of Y6, had abandoned his identity to protect his family. Certain events will start to unfold within the faction he currently serves to, which will point and tie in to a crucial moment in Y7's story. This time around, we get to see the events that transpired from Kiryu's point of view leading into it. Do note that since this title is a "Side story", it is much shorter in all avenues than your average RGG game. As a return to Kiryu, this game handles as a brawler beat-em-up once more, I've not played the Judgment titles as of yet so I'm not too aware of how the brawling combat improved on the Dragon Engine after Y6/YK2, but in this game it does feel more responsive, Kiryu wields a brand new fighting style, with cold and calculated moves, and Spy-like gadgets to aid in combat. The new style feels good, kind of like a new take of Rush style from 0/K1. The gadgets are interesting but some are very annoying to activate as they require holding down the main combat buttons, perhaps a better method could have been chosen. Additionally there's also a more traditional Yakuza fighting style, with Kiryu's older moves. The story mostly takes place in Sotenbori, taking the main spotlight for the first time. Since the city itself is not all that big, it fits well the theme of the game and it's more reduced scope, it works perfectly well on my opinion. There's not many changes to the city from previous titles, but there is a new exploration skill using the Spider agent gadget, so there's some extra stuff to seek in town. Besides Sotenbori, you'll also be taken to another area called "The Castle", but this mainly serves as the holding place of the Coliseum and a few select story parts. Looks like they aimed to have a different Coliseum experience this time around, with a new mode called "Hell Team Rumble", where teams of allies and enemies face each other. This allows even the player to choose different characters to play as for these fights. Unfortunately, every other character besides Kiryu has a very lackluster moveset and is not that great to use. It ends up being more of a grind until your characters are high enough level to crush all fights rather than an engaging mode. Albeit short, the game is very enjoyable, a lot of the side activities like quests and Sub stories are baked into the main story as an introduction, and they are interesting enough that you can spend several hours just doing them before proceeding with the story. For fellow completionists, I'm happy to report that on this one they didn't actually include too many incredibly grindy tasks, given the smaller scope of the game, the minigames that are included don't entirely require to replay them over and over as much, and for almost all the activities I had a lot of fun doing the requirements. Of course the game is a must play for everyone who's played all the previous titles and it also serves as a connecting bridge to Yakuza 8, where Kiryu takes a protagonistic role alongside Ichiban Kasuga.

The gameplay has the symptoms of something churned out in six months but the writing is solid and it has possibly one of the BEST villains within the series. also, if you don't want it taking up EIGHTY FUCKING GIGS on your drive, delete the infinite wealth demo located in the files (its runtime2 lol), and then find a mod that replaces all the 4k cabaret minigame videos with still pngs, you now have a game that is only 40 gigs in size. this game also has watase in the peter griffin fit if that helps

Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name felt like a true continuation after the events of Yakuza 6: The Song of Life and I was very happy with the experience as a whole. The game is much shorter than previous Yakuza titles, but I didn't feel like it was lacking anything — it was the perfect length and didn't overstay its welcome, the combat was fun, the story was good, and it felt very reminiscent of the older games in the way it presented itself. The mini games are always enjoyable, but I loved the addition of the Coliseum and putting my team together. I didn't buy the legendary fighter pack, as it's not required to win those battles, and I was still pleasantly surprised by some of the familiar faces throughout the series that joined me. The game itself didn't feel too grindy in my opinion, I actually thought it felt a bit easier than usual...basically everything you do requires money, lots of it, and you can earn more than you'll even know what to do with just by completing the Coliseum fights. I also made it a point to complete all of the available requests through the Akame Network before progressing the story, which I'm sure contributed to it feeling less 'grindy' overall, but I thoroughly enjoyed them because they reminded me a lot of some of the side quests you'd find in Yakuza 0 or Kiwami . The quirkiness and humor were definitely there! As for the story, it was so much better than I expected. It tied all of the events from Yakuza 6 and Like a Dragon (7) , even the transition into Infinite Wealth , together so perfectly. The ending had me in tears...having played all of the previous games that led up to that moment was just an incredible, yet emotional, feeling. I loved every minute of it.

You need to know the entire lore behind the Yakuza games before playing this game, and this is the only game where I say it is mandatory to know the lore. Yakuza Like a Dragon you can go in the game without knowing anything and you'll have a good experience but not with this game. This game has one of the best combat styles in the entire series, pocket racer, and pretty good sub stories. The ending is so good it will break you and make you wanna jump off a roof.

This game is the like a dragon that happens between the end of 6 and the middle of 7. To fully understand and attach to Kiryu, some other characters in the game and the story, I recommend you to play Yakuza 0-6 in order first, then come back and buy this game after you finish. Like basically every Yakuza game, it has very good story development and it really does a very good job immersing into the game world and it's characters. One of the most notable feature in the game is the ability to change kiryu clothes in game (in the previous games u could only do it with mods or in premium adventure after you finish the game) Even though the game is quite short (only 5 chapters compared to around 15 chapters in previous games), it felt complete and it acts as a very good bridge besides Yakuza 6 and LAD. However, side content (aka Akame requests if you plan to get to max level) takes pretty long, and all the other activities are pretty fun and re playable. The combat system is new and is also fun to use and play with. Also congrats to Kson for getting into the game and being an in game hostess, i know how much you simp for kiryu-chan. In karoake, the song "tonight"'s cinematic is also finally animated instead of just being static images in Kiwami, Kiwami 2 and 6.
