For a game that does such terrifying things to people- the way it warps their bodies, their minds: it's a game that truly, deeply, loves people. There's a tenderness to it- not the painful tenderness of Spine, but not dissimilar. There's a hope to it- not the hope of Jasper, but not dissimilar. There's all this care and optimism in the face of a world that is as bleak and cruel as can be and yet which is still filled with people who can all, as we always have done, love and look out for each other. There's mindless creatures that tear people limb from limb, there's beings that will absorb you and subject you to worse fates still, there's desperate fights and difficult choices and hallway upon hallway (and for floor one, upon hallway upon hallway upon hallway) of things that chase, stalk, and pursue. But it asks if you can put up with all that and still care. If you can still believe in others when they say they care for you, even as the world grows teeth and gnaws at you and screams with malice. It's a fun game, a scary game, too. But more than anything a game that truly, deeply, loves people.
My review will mean nothing and nobody will ever look at it. BUT, this is truly a wonderful game, the combat feels good and is fun, the encounters are always tough enough to make you have to actually apply strategy, the art is absolutely astounding. The interactions you get between characters is fun and lets you better understand them. Multiple playthroughs are warranted due to different party members you can get and builds. Overall, 10/10
If this game looks or sounds remotely interesting to you, stop reading and just try it! I'm having a hard time finding the right words to do this game justice. Here's a few facts: [*] "Look Outside" is special. [*] It will surprise you at least once per in-game day. [*] I regret at least two choices. [*] The story and the atmosphere are rather bleak. [*] The storytelling however and many of the characters are genuinely wholesome. [*] It's not terribly scary, but there's a lot of body horror and cosmic shenanigans. [*] The artwork is weirdly beautiful - or beautifully ugly. [*] The level design is generally superb, but you can get lost here and there. [*] The soundtrack slaps. [*] It's kinda difficult, so you're gonna reload a lot, especially at the beginning. [*] I encountered one or two bugs. [*] You can press F4 for quick fullscreen mode. [*] It reminds me of E33 in more than one way. [*] It's really fun. Thank you devs for this remarkable experience.
This wasn't made with an intention to drive the player desperate, sad or hopeless. This was made by someone who loves humanity and respects your time. Genuinely one of the greatest examples of media where the journey is as good as the destination. If you love horror media and can't help but empathise with weird monster freaks, this game is for you. Just play it, stop reading the reviews.
