Decent, But At The Verge Of Identity Crisis This game deserves a mixed review. Lost In Random is a charming story-driven adventure game released in 2021. The combat is flawed but the world-building and the story are wonderful. Now fast-forward to today. Lost In Random: The Eternal Die, an action roguelite spin-off of the series, is out. This time the game aims to be more action-focused. The combat is certainly more fluid and diverse than its predecessor, but it seems like the game sacrifices some of its world-building and storytelling to achieve that goal. And that's why I am a bit torn about it. As an action roguelite enjoyer, it's a fun experience with an interesting artifact system; as a Lost In Random fan, I cannot help but feels disappointed by how little the story goes. Things I Like About Lost In Random: The Eternal Die: 1. Relic System Probably the most interesting part of the game. [*]Relics can boost your attacks. You get them normally after clearing out a room. Other than applying new elements to your attacks, almost every relic functions as conditional buff. The game encourages you to weave all of your combat tools together and set up the right combo order, instead of relying on one trick. [*]Another thing interesting about relic is that all of them comes with colors. Each color represents different stats for our protagonist(red for weapon damage, gold for card attacks, etc.). Matching three absorbs the color and grants you 50% bonus to the corresponding stat. As a result, choose your relic carefully and focus on gaining one or two stats as fast as possible. [*]You only have eleven slots to fill in, so pre-planning your relic placement is key for the build. It is an interesting mini game to juggle the relic slots. You need to keep enough space for your preferred stat, avoid taking unnecessary relics that may clog up the space, and keep the colorless relic in a good pattern. [*]The game also introduces colored Pearls(basically relics with no effect that will be destroyed on matching) and Ink(paint the relics with new color) to make the relic management more flexible. 2. Other Compliments [*]Still using dice-related puns and phrases as names for the NPCs. [*]The voice-acting is very solid. [*]Tons of weapons skins and character outfits to unlock. [*]Weekly challenges provide some interesting handicaps that can drastically alter your run. Things I Like And Dislike About Lost In Random: The Eternal Die: Combat The meat of action roguelite, and it's decent enough. Like [*]Already the move sets are more refined than the first game. You can easily chain normal attack and charge attack together. Fortune serves as your range attack with damage value varied depending on the side he rolls. Charge attack and Card attacks now features a perfect-timing system. Time them well to receive hefty bonuses. [*]There are four weapons you can choose. Each of them also has five enhancement paths. Some can alter the charge attack with a new pattern, while others offer new bonuses to your combo or additional stat boosts. It is fun to try out different enhancement paths to see what fits your preferred play style. You might find some surprising results even in your least favorite weapons. [*]Interestingly, if an enhancement path grants weapon elemental damage and then you get a relic that also gives a different element, your weapon can now deal two types of status damage without one overriding the other. Go crazy with this knowledge! Dislike [*]Normal attack feels really weak in this game(except bow). The impact and the feedback are not satisfying enough. There is no upgrade that improves normal attack(even if it does chances are it also boosts other attacks as well). You can pretty much ignore normal attack and just use charge attack instead. [*]It might just be me though. I feel like the combat is way too streamlined and loses some of the charm its predecessor establishes. I know the combat in Lost In Random is awkward, but at least it was trying to integrate cards and dice rolls together. The Eternal Die now only treats dice roll as regular range attack with less impactful result and cards as regular spells. [*]You can't upgrade cards or get a better one. Their stats never change. Things I Dislike About Lost In Random: The Eternal Die: 1. Random Doesn't Rule For a roguelite, the features are pretty lacking. [*]Levels tend to be way too long and have little variations. You can see the same layout within three runs. There aren't enough special encounters or challenge rooms to spice up the run. [*]Other than The Doublets who choose two out of the four different knights as bodies, the rest of the bosses do not have any variation at all. [*]Hades proves dialogues can be a good way to incentivize multiple runs. I don't expect the same volume here, but I certainly wish there were more than just two-encounters-worth of lore tidbits. 2. Other Complaints [*]There is no brief and proper introduction to the world of Lost In Random in this game. It can easily confuse new players about the world-building, the character designs, and some familiar phrases. [*]There is no way to re-roll relic, pearl and ink options. [quote=author]If you like what I write, please consider a follow to [url=https://store.steampowered.com/curator/45738167/]my curator page, thanks! 如果你喜歡我寫的東西,可以追蹤[url=https://store.steampowered.com/curator/45738167/]我的鑑賞家 喔!

Lost in Random - 3.5 ⭐⭐⭐✨⚫️ ⭐ - for the smooth play style. I like my roguelites movement and moves smooth. This has it. ⭐ - I like the little puzzle game with three across matching to power up your person. Its fun and makes the runs fresh. ⭐ - I love the Tim Burton vibes I get from playing this and the dice....so many dice. ✨ - I enjoyed finding outfits and hairstyles and weapon upgrades which was fun each with their own play style. ❌ - Not enough weapons. ❌ - Short ❌ - dear lord short. Should be priced at $10 max ❌ - the dust upgrades were okay, needs revamped and perhaps more helpful. Tree form instead of the two sides coin. Do one for people who like throwing the dice ( I really didnt ), one for attacking/damage, one for health and maybe some armor would be fun. Not a bad game. Too short to really stick with though.

You have to check out Lost in Random: The Eternal Dice if you haven't already. I just finished it, and it's such a nice game. The art style is absolutely incredible and super unique. But it's not just pretty; the combat is snappy, and the gameplay is fun. Rolling dice in combat sounds weird, but it totally works and makes every fight feel strategic and exciting. And the story is not that bad either. Plus, the characters are fantastic. The only complaint I have is that I wish it were a bit longer. There is not much to do after beating the Mare. If you're looking for something that feels different and charming in the roguelike genre, you've got to play this one. It's a real gem! 9/10

Putting this review up so there is some perspective from someone who didn't receive the game for free. I completed the game in approximately 2.5 hours (which is a bit of a warning if you care about the money to playtime ratio). TL DR: a responsive, snappy room-based roguelite akin to Hades. Lovely Burton meets Alice in Wonderland aesthetic to it, for a lack of a more accurate description. Lovely voice acting. Does come with typical roguelite issues and doesn't innovate much. You basically get what it says on the box with little to push the, by now well-established formula forward. The gameplay loop is super familiar and honestly a little bland. Slash and dash will be 99% of your inputs. Occasionally you get access to a "card attack", which is some powerful, customizable effect. You can also throw your die, which functions as a sort-of ranged damage/install, depending on what items you obtained. The card attack is charged by dealing damage, which is generally a nice way to go about it as it rewards competent play as opposed to perpetuating being passive. Unfortunately the designers here did not fully capture why this implementation is great to mitigate passive play (akin to Hyper Light Drifter), which I will talk about in a bit. The die throw can be replenished by picking it back up. The implementation of the die feels extremely gimmicky and shoehorned into the game because it had to be there. Not only does the randomize effect have VERY little impact on how the game plays (outside a few events explicitly designed for it) there are also a lot of upgrades that condition themselves such that NOT interacting with it is BETTER for you (e.g. "die will periodically..." or "when you have the die on your back..."). This is typical roguelite noise that interferes with how expressive the actual game is; less is more sometimes. Arguably my biggest problem with Lost in Random: The Eternal Die is that it offers permanent ranged options (a bow, in this case). With this simple inclusion the designers have essentially put themselves into a split: do we design enemies around the assumption the player has permanent ranged options or do we design it around melee? This is for example why I enjoy Hyper Light Drifter's design so much: it focuses around the latter and it CAN do that, because ranged options are inherently tied to using the former. The result in this game's case is that the bow just trivializes the entire game (I completed 2 bosses in my first attempt in a row using it, on my second run, without having encountered them before -- clearly this isn't the intended pacing here). Visual clarity is OK, but not good. Color palettes are used at random. Some AoE effects are very transparent for some reasons (like poison clouds left by enemies). The background is very little invasive however, which was a pet peeve of mine in Hades, so it's never hard to distinguish what you are supposed to focus on from background noise. I fear that in later levels the particle spam will become very annoying. The communication on enemy telegraphing is not good, but the game is easy enough this doesn't become a huge pain. It is completely unclear to me how the enemy stagger state works for example; it seems to work up to some limit and then they break free? It also doesn't seem to work on all enemies. The roguelite element is done in a very unique way. You slot upgrades into a grid to essentially play match-3. As you can never fully plan ahead on what new tokens you are going to be entering this creates a nice pace-breaking distraction. Unfortunately, as all roguelites, I do fear this small spatial managing game will become very stale very quickly as optimal solutions are uncovered. Overall I like this game. It's inoffensive. It looks and sounds good. It's not great or innovative from a design perspective.

Welcome to Tim Burton's Hades! This game is VERY well made, polished, and a lot of fun. it's a RogueLITE that definitely has that hook that makes you say "One more run..." The combat is fast, fluid, and varied with tons of buildcrafting to be had, I also want to make a special mention regarding the voice actors in this game. They are all FANTASTIC! They add so much to the game. Well done everyone!!
