I bought this game because a review said "Don't, it's just a Brotato clone." & that's what sold me on it. I have been enjoying it a lot. The weapons have been simple and fun to use, the stats are easy enough to learn, and i like the unique abilities given to some of the characters. Definitely recommend
This game is an unabashed love letter to Brotato, so it has a lot in common with it - six weapon slots, four tiers, stat upgrades each level up, hardcore techno soundtrack, etc. There are some differences between them though: Things Noobs does better than Brotato: + Unique weapons are far and away more interesting in this. + I would suggest the art style is also more interesting and varied. + Better sense of humour. + There's abilities in the game, unlike Brotato. + Enemies are far more varied and interesting in this, especially bosses. Things that are just different than Brotato: * Brotato really wants you to specialize in a single weapon, as the weapon mechanics stack up to six. Noobs wants you to manage them, as most mechanics max out at two, three or four. * This makes end-of-round calculations inherent stats, and does away with Harvesting. On the one hand, I find this system is more interesting than Brotato, but on the other hand, there's virtually zero interaction with it - it's just a number that goes up or down in a vacuum. Things Noobs does worse than Brotato: - Mod support doesn't exist here, which is an absolute shame, because Brotato has some brilliant mods out there. - Items tend to be dramatically less interesting than Brotato. Virtually all of them are simple "this stat up, this stat down" ones, there's almost no system-changing ones to speak of. - Balance is all over the place between characters. Some of them can absolutely steamroll difficulty five without trying. Some of them are barely able to beat difficulty zero. Brotato wasn't perfect, but this is worse. - I find most builds end up feeling the same by the time all is said and done, which does slightly kill replay value. - On a similar note, unlock conditions in this are a bit less inspired than Brotato, with 90% of them being "Beat a game with a character/Beat a game with a character on difficulty five". The remainder are just "get this stat up to 'x' amount." All in all, if you like single-stick shooters, you should absolutely own this. While it is blatantly similar to Brotato, it does manage to carve out its own niche, and I hope the developer intends to keep expanding and refining it.
Some of the recent negative reviews have some valid points, but others are such nonsense that it's clear they didn't play it very long or at all. Cutscenes can be turned off as well as the chat bubbles from the noobs if it annoys you. You can also turn on opacity of your attacks so they don't clutter the screen to the point that you can't see enemy attacks. I like the designs and aesthetic and all the characters are unique. I don't know where the AI art claims came from but there's zero evidence and no reason to hide it since the punishment for doing such would be disastrous for a lone developer. While they do exist on Steam- this game does not come off as a low effort, asset flipped, ai-generated, money-grab slop to me. The music could use a few more tracks as it does get tedious (Brotato also had a tedious soundtrack for a long time before they added more variety). The addition of being able to block enemies from spawning as well as the way passive options change how weapons behave, sets it apart from Brotato for me. As for balancing, every roguelike has balance issues, even Brotato and its DLC have had its fair share of those. The dev made 130 updates over the past year so clearly he wants to polish it and make it better and is open to feedback from people playing the game. If i could think of improvements I'd like to see: some more music, more optimization (game runs well and have never had crashes even at endless wave 40+ BUT you can measure a single frame in minutes at that point). Maybe a separate mode where you can filter out and control exactly what you want for a build without affecting the base Brotato-like mode and its format. Maybe add some extra achievements with odd goals like the gold sheep one as those are a lot of fun to figure out how to reach. I love Brotato and Noobs Are Coming will probably reach the played time I have for that in no time. Edit: As of Feb 20, 2026 the game page has been updated to show AI was used. Obviously don't buy if you care about AI being used. If you do not care and just want to know if it's fun, I would still recommend it because it IS fun, grab it on sale.
There's nothing wrong with copying the best, everybody does that. That being said, go and play Brotato first, 100% it, then get Noobs. There's a couple great ideas here, nice synergies and a cool vibe. But you know, when you already played the best, everything else will seem a bit lacking. And that's OK.
Ever wanted to be big foot and kick a steel spiked ball at people running at you thinking they're in a video game fighting a boss and yelling silly game things? WELL NOW YOU CAN! I absolutely love this game. I really enjoyed Brotato. This is Brotato, but with lots of personality and humor and just gamer cuteness. This just makes me smile and gives more more of Brotato, in a whole new way, with lots of new mechanics. ABSOLUTELY recommend this game.
