This game is great. It's a pretty unique metroidvania with gear-based progression (no level-ups), an emphasis on resource management, and slow, precise combat. If you've played a lot of metroidvanias you're probably used to blazing through rooms tanking hits and killing everything while hoarding junk items that you're never going to touch, but here things are different. Damage is high all around, you don't get free heals or MP at save points, your health doesn't really increase much throughout the game, and most enemies inflict nasty status ailments in addition to the damage. So this game is more about being cautious, clever and resourceful, and you'll need to actually use your consumables instead of just hoarding them, it has an almost survival horror vibe to it. Most enemies have some kind of trick to them to kill them consistently without taking damage, and bosses tend to have some combination of items or equipment that hard counters them, so make sure to experiment with items if you're having a hard time. This game is probably sounding pretty difficult, but it's really not, it just demands attention and some caution. I would actually recommend playing it on veteran mode (this game's hard mode) right from the start, because this is the type of game where the mechanics come more into focus in the harder difficulties, and you have more of a reason to use all of your resources and tools. I actually played it on veteran mode for my first playthrough and I'm not some metroidvania god or anything, so don't be afraid to try it. The game should take around 8 hours or so for a first playthrough, but this is a very highly replayable game, not just because the design lends itself well to replaying, but you'll also unlock new game modes that significantly change the gameplay. For example, the most genius unlock in this game is a mode where you play as three of the bosses you defeated throughout the game and dynamically switch between them Trine-style.

It's a good game. It's short for this style, you can easily complete 100% of the map in 6-7 hours even if you play on veteran difficulty for the first time, but that's not really a bad thing. I think if the game were any longer than that, it would start to get tiresome. Its size is ideal, mainly because after you finish the game, you get access to some new game modes, and one of them is basically a new adventure on the same map, but with totally new gameplay. It's a game that will force you to play methodically and carefully, and you'll basically have to choose the weapons and skills that make you feel most comfortable. It's possible to create combat styles that are quite different from each other, but I personally think that using daggers as primary weapons and the "winged shoes" is what makes the gameplay the most enjoyable because all the other weapons are super slow. The beginning is difficult (veteran difficulty), especially the first bosses, but then you can become quite overpowered and the game gets a lot easier. The balance isn't very good, but that's to be expected in a game that is open to so many different styles of gameplay. I recommend it for players who have no problem adapting to a more methodical and slow gameplay, with a character that doesn't have much mobility, so all movements need to be calculated.

Game is decent but pretty far removed from the traditional fast-action metroidvania. This is more of a survival game - you have very limited resources, enemies do a lot of damage, movement is clunky and attacking is slow. You have to be very deliberate with your actions or you'll find yourself dead very quickly. Your character really doesn't grow in power that much over the course of the game, it's more about what items you find and how you put them together to support the playstyle you're trying to achieve. Something unique about this game is that it has environmental interactions. You can light oil on fire, freeze water to stand on it, etc. You can set these up yourself too using consumables to make puddles of oil for example, then light it with a fire spell and burn all the enemies in the area. Personally it's not really my thing, I prefer games with tight movement and quick attacks. I did finish it though so it must be doing something right. The art is very nice, it's entirely sprite based but with modern lighting and rotation/scaling. The drawn character portraits are high quality. The story is pretty meh, but when has a metroidvania had a good story? You're here for the gameplay and if you like a more methodical type of game then this is one you should definitely try out.

Nutshell ver.: PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEE I NEED ANOTHER GAME LIKE THIS!!!! I love all the items and possibilities at your disposal. It's light on story, but the story present is pretty okay. Graphics and particle effects are absolutely beautiful and amplify the gameplay and atmosphere. Also, love the girls and their designs (portraits are especially expressive and fluid with beautiful colouring along with the rest of the game, thank goodness for the gallery). I've played the additional modes and I can safely say that even after that, I still crave more (I mean, look at my hours).
