Beginning gameplay is pretty rough, but like the other games it gets better as you progress. The story is lovely as ever. For those that are curious, the game can run on a potato. The overall game size is not even 200mb, so it does not ask for much. I'm a huge fan of the 3 games, replayed them all a while later because I loved the story and gameplay so much. Will we get a 4th game? It's been 5 years so probably not, but it would be awesome if we did. Inti/Sunsoft when?????
The last game in the BMZ trilogy, Blaster Master Zero 3, is a worthy send-off, with both the narrative chops and difficulty to prove it. To expand on the former point, BMZ3 flips the script somewhat in that, on top of the residual mutant threat, the human planet of Sophia's defence force also opposes Jason on an intermittent and flexible basis. Without spoiling too much, Eve is initially captured by the Sophia Force (SF), and Jason spends the majority of the game searching for her, investigating news about her circumstances, and fighting off any mutants in the way. Recurring pilots like Kanna and Gonbei; Sophia Force commander Kane Gardner and his wife Jennifer; and some mutant bosses from BMZ2 that weren't quite dead all make for an engaging, constantly evolving storyline in each area you visit. Kane's heterodox tendency to defy SF command orders to indirectly help out Jason, and Leibniz essentially replacing Eve in the passenger seat of the G-Sophia helps BMZ3 carve out an identity of its own, making it more than just a chronological following of the prior game's plot conventions. BMZ3 is more difficult than both BMZ1 and BMZ2, as you'd probably expect. While the G-Sophia has most of the abilities it had in previous games, the increased complexity of the enemies and areas you visit compensate for this. Enemies ambush you from their spawn point more frequently, the side-scrolling "other dimension" segments flip gravity upside down and employ distortion fields to keep you honest, and bosses from the previous games are now regular enemies in both the side-scrolling and the top-down segments. Despite that, very welcome QoL features like the Spin Dash and hoverpack (which negates all fall damage) make exploration much less of a slog in general. BMZ3 absolutely has the best movement mechanics in the trilogy. BMZ3 begets only two complaints. The first is that the area theming is repetitive. Every single area, except Stranga (which is just a returning level from BMZ2) and the ??? Area, which takes place in an alternate dimension, is just a nondescript metal facility. Some of them might have a space backdrop, or a city backdrop, or a fleshy backdrop; but ultimately, they all share incredibly samey techbase environments where the only real difference is the colour of their tilesets. Compared to BMZ1 and BMZ2, which had biomes of all kinds, including volcanoes, sewer systems, oriental forests, and "two-faced" planets dividing deserts and glacial caverns – BMZ3's biome diversity comes up short. My second complaint is that the super-dimensional spaces aren't as fun as they probably could've been. The reversed gravity is usually just obnoxious to deal with, it doesn't change the core geometry of the area, and it allows you to just avoid engaging with every single SF dungeon without any trade off. I preferred BMZ2's planetoids as far as side areas were concerned. BMZ3 has the most emotionally compelling and expertly composed True Ending sequence in the trilogy, fitting of the finale. The twists, reveals, music, bosses and callbacks all resolve each-other to create a really compelling ending. Moreover, some of these references to previous games (e.g. Blasting Again) still set the groundwork for a fourth game. With the polished quality of the series as a whole, that makes an exciting prospect. There is no reason not to buy this game if you've played BMZ1 and BMZ2. Much like its two predecessors, it makes for a enjoyable and succinct experience, even if it exchanges some their merits for others.
Great finale to the series. Everything feels dialed in at this point and the difficulty is well balanced. Once you catch the hint at "the ending," it takes a fun turn and there's much more content afterwards. Cool idea. If you've already played the first two definitely pick it up.
Story-wise, this is a great end to the series. Really emphasizes the bond between Jason and Eve (and Fred). It makes me feel for them a lot more than I would've expected to when I played through the first game. Gameplay-wise, the game is alright. It does continue to build upon what the last two games did, but nothing amazing. The 2D tank sections are about the same. You once again find cool weapons and mobility options, but because the dimension hopping gimmick, the maps this time were a little too complex for me. Thankfully there is fast travel so any back-tracking is mitigated. The top-down shooter sections still continue to be fun, and they did rebalance the gun levels this time so that you will find use for more than one gun type. And thankfully, the music and aesthetics still continue to be good. None of the areas in the game felt particularly memorable, most of them are just large facilities on planet Sophia, with the exception of returning to planet Stranga (Hi again Kanna) near the later half of the game. I also noticed a lot of boss reuse in this game which I think is sorta lame. While the gameplay just didn't hit the same way BMZ2 did for me, this game and its story has its highs and can still be enjoyed a fair amount
The game layout, shooting, treasure hunt, and adventure appeal are all definitely there. This game is better, considering I first played the original NES version of "Blaster Master" by Sunsoft when I was just 14 years old. Great Game! I would definitely recommend this game to beginners of all ages!
