Not many stories touch me to my very core, leaving a hole behind that remains years after they are over. This is one of those stories. In a way, this game is one of survival, fending off creatures of nightmare while roaming the land alone and having brief encounters with people you don't really connect with. There seems to be a destination in mind, but your time in this world is limited; the bar in the corner fills at a slow rate yet constant rate, but fills up even more with your death. (For those that really don't like it, the game is pretty forgiving with how slow it is. I managed to complete my 1st run with the bar being maybe around 50%. And if you still really don't like it, then minor spoiler: the game doesn't end the 1st time you reach 100% ) Yes, the story is confusing and mysterious, with the writing being obscure and the visuals being not very detailed. However, there are chunks of story that can be parsed on their own, and threads that help connect certain pieces. The story that is there is just brilliant! The writing is poetic in its mournfulness, while being played around with in interesting ways. This game is very queer with a great chunk of gender (wow, the amount of gender and how much some lines dig into my soul), and the game reflects some of the hardships that may be faced. I love the art and how stylish it is in its sketchiness! The music is also amazing, being almost soothing or even playful at times, while also being able to incite a deep dread at other moments. The attacks feel great, with nice animation and a really great touch of unique sound effects for every mantra. In other words, the vibes are just incredible! I know some won't/don't like that this game requires new game+ to fully experience the story, but I enjoyed the runs and didn't find them to be very long. Also, I like to think of the 1st run as almost the initial experience with trauma, or perhaps dipping one's toes into traumatic memories a bit too soon; you/the protagonist can't process everything as it is all too much to bear. New game+, however, may be seen as a return to said memories a bit more prepared, being able to glean new information. It has been a few years since I 1st touched this game and I still think about it. I still revisit it and likely will continue to years later. There are no games I'd recommend more than this duology. I doubt I'd find something very similar. This game may have been born of pain, but I think that its important to remember that even if it feels like the world hates you, you should never give up. Struggle. Fight back. Survive.

this is the first game that feels like i'm the specific target audience. Incredibly helpful and therapeutic for someone with night-terrors, psychosis, schizophrenia. One of my favorite games of all time. The music score is incredible and the art is straight out of my sketchbook

Lucah gets a solid 8/10 from me. I'm reviewing this having just finished Death of a Wish, which I strongly feel improved on (almost) everything this game started. Lucah is a beautiful game and something I'd recommend every LGBTQ+ gamer to play, because for all it's flaws, it's still a unique, satisfying, and deeply heartfelt game worth experiencing. Incredible soundtrack, combat is unlike any hack & slash/soulslike I've played and it is CHUNKY. Landing a combo feels like living through anime impact frames. The visuals are stunning but there's so much going on it gets too difficult to tell what's happening during combat later on, and with a punishment system as intense as what this game puts you through, it does impact the experience negatively a bit. The game gives you a lot of modifications you can apply to essentially make sure you get through to the ending you want, and it's nice to have that option, but it does feel like it's there to offput an existing balance issue as much as it's also there for accessibility. The story of this game is abstract but phenomenal, and I won't say anything else about it.

I'm kinda shocked it took me this long to play this all things considered. Lucah: Born of a Dream is a game about being queer in a world ruled by religious fundamentalism, of watching this earth be lit alight by powerful idiots whos only interest is in enriching and shielding themselves. The ways in which our own perceptions of evil can produce nightmares around us and how this tendency fuels everything in our lives to such an extent that even in the worlds we make for ourselves we can't escape these things. It's about the hopelessness such a world crushes us with, and our unwillingness to simply roll over and die despite such a place being so deeply against us. Of Surviving even as such a place buries your dearest friends and you just... need to continue. Of the loneliness it breeds... The ways this can drive you to push people away, the shame the... way things will turn out if you instead choose to bury these parts of yourself and snuff them out. But. I'll be honest, while I do think this game is a masterpiece and that if you're reading this you should play it (ALL of it. Not just the first playthrough but NG+ and the descent.) I actually didn't write this review for you. I'm also writing it for the developer. Hey. Melessthanthree. I hope you're doing okay. I'll be honest, when I transitioned I ultimately did wind up estranging a lot of people in my life. Family members, friends, loved ones. A whole lot. Even after that, I continued pushing people away. But... I did eventually find a few people who do love me for who I am. People who, because of that, were capable of making me feel love that is so deep and dear to me that it makes all of this worth existing through. I know I'm not at the end of this journey yet. Maybe I'm not really speaking to you anymore. Maybe I'm speaking to an older version of you. But hey, someone else might stumble across this who's in the same spot you were back when you made this. Despite *everything.* How hopeless it all feels right now. How much the powers that be want to wipe us out of existence. There's still joy, hope and love to be found. Never detransition. Never let them take you out of *you.* Never kill yourself. Life for anything, be it spite, love, passion, stupidity, or hope. Yeah. I'm the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ main character, I've got the main character syndrome, I sure hope the next game in this series isn't about to put me in my ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ place, let's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ gooooooo-
