If you are planning on playing this game (which you should) Make sure you go > Properties > Betas > set oss_lugaru as the branch, it adds more options and content. I love this game so much, I would play the demo and the Open source version for countless hours, definitely over 100 hours, same with Overgrowth, Both of these games carried my childhood. This version of the game is pretty good, i appreciate that they have osslugaru as a branch that is installable, it adds a ton of extra resolution and video options. The story of this game is pretty simple but kind of sad, and the combat is very fun and works pretty well for a 2005 game. The old graphics will always be special to me, especially the soundtrack Grass1.ogg, absolutely heavenly. The thing i love about this version of the game is that it comes with 3 more fan made campaigns which are just as good if not better than the main story. my favourite being the empire campaign That said i did have some difficulties with THIS version of osslugaru, for some reason the skybox glitched and crashed constantly, if you come across this issue too, download osslugaru 1.2 from gitlab, and copy the files into the steam installation and rename the new executable from lugaru.exe to Lugaru.exe and run the game. this is the only way i know how to fix this

It's so bloody quick! There were plenty of battles, especially when there were multiple opponents, that left me wondering what exactly happened. Win or lose. And that's not the only way Lugaru HD mimics old kung fu flicks. The story is a by the numbers 'best fighter anyone's ever seen experiences a conspiracy-fueled tragedy' sort of affair. Complete with the genre's usual disregard for gravity. Just... with anthropomorphic rabbits this time around, a ridiculousness that juxtaposes itself against increasingly morally grey violence and the cold reality of the fight for survival. The past 20 years haven't been too kind to Lugaru HD though. Its visuals are often jerky and there are frequent crashes. I had to download an open source version(which I later learned also existed as a beta option within Steam) to get past the third battle arena of the main campaign with my save intact. Once I did, the difficulty picked up something fierce. Don't be fooled by the early fights. Your first wolf will make you wish you chose Easier.

In the earliest days of what we now call "Indie games" (before we even had a name for em), Lugaru was a curiosity that stuck with me way more than I ever expected. For what was essentially a one-man project it was shockingly forward-thinking - the ragdoll physics, while a little dated by modern standards, are still impressive considering this was well before they were the norm, and the minimalist UI was YEARS ahead of the curve of what big-budget AAA games would end up doing, let alone the brutal but fun brawler combat that strays away from combos and flashy finishers and takes a different approach, to focus on fluidity and a smooth escalation/deescalation of tension while providing fun stealth mechanics as a mixer (the enemies can literally smell you!) All of this wrapped up in an intriguing, atmospheric, dark and mature revenge plot story that pulls equally from Watership Down and kung-fu movies and you have a fascinating footnote in indie game history. Wolfire games have sadly all but abandoned this setting and these characters, leaving this game in a state of limbo that's unfortunately become a hassle to run on modern systems. Released far too early for the eventual indie boom to give it a presence, while its sequel languished in perpetual development far past whatever fanfare it could have garnered. This game has been long overdue for a reappraisal.
