This is a game that is near and dear to my heart from ever since I was a kid. The story is absolutely amazing, the characters are incredibly entertaining, and the soundtrack is hands-down one of the absolute best soundtracks you will ever hear from this era of gaming. One of the best things about this game series is that it encourages you to speak with NPCs in the game. Because every NPC, regardless of importance to the story, provides some rich character development, humor, and more. Join in on a love story that I honestly wish I could emulate in my daily life in order to show my devotion to someone dear to me. I will not spoil you on anything in this game. But I WILL give you a VERY big tip. Don't bother with Nash's status effect spells, focus solely on his offensive spells like Thunder Bomb. The hit rate on his status attacks is not the best. Oh, and just as an example of some of the humor in this game, there is an NPC (a child) who if you talk to will say that he wants to grow up to be like one of the party members due to them being a "hunk and a half" as described by the child's mother, only to then question what a hunk is, and then you get to hear the criticism of Nash complaining about said party member being a horrid influence on kids due to them being a bandit. Trust me, this game is great. My ONLY complaint is that they didn't keep the original voices for the characters. Luna's voice is not the same as it was on my Playstation 1, and when you have the original game still, you notice.

I first played the Lunar games on the Sega CD, and like many people, I no longer have access to that console. So seeing Lunar Remastered Collection arrive on Steam was an instant purchase for me. This collection includes Lunar: Silver Star Story and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue, two games I genuinely believe are among the greatest JRPGs ever made. Everything about these games still holds up beautifully — the heartfelt story, the charming and expressive visuals, and one of the best soundtracks the genre has ever produced. There’s a certain charm to these games that you don’t see very often anymore, even in modern JRPGs. If you love classic JRPGs, or you’ve ever wanted to experience what many consider the genre at its absolute peak, do yourself a favor and grab this collection while you can. 10/10

Way back when I was a little tween, the Lunar Duo were the first JRPGs I played, back on the Sega CD. All the other neighborhood kids were playing Final Fantasy on their Super Nintendos, and I was over here playing Lunar on the Sega CD. I like the sequel more than the first game, but maybe that's because I like the Hiro/Lucia pair better than Luna/Alex. Hiro and Lucia are probably my favorite couple from any media, which is probably mostly nostalgia from playing this game originally while coming of age. I also like that they were able to give the female main characters something to do other than find a man: specifically Jean and Lemina. That was rare for a 90s story. Playing this again after playing the modern Final Fantasy games really pushes home how much newer games "borrow" tropes from the old. Althena and Zophar are essentially Hydelyn and Zodiark from FFXIV. Overall I have kind of a mixed feeling about this, just because there's only the two games in this really vivid and creative world. It's like Firefly. Love it; want more. But I should be careful what I wish for; I'm sure if they were to revive it this far past when it ended, they'd find a way to ruin it. Like Star Wars. My only complaint is that I paid $40 for what is essentially an emulator of a 30 year old game. It's great for what it is, but I probably shouldn't have paid over $25. Nostalgia gets me again. Great games, great story, but maybe wait for a better sale than I took.

Love is the plot. If you're looking for a modern game with the best graphics, the smoothest mechanics, and the most complex plot. This isn't that game. But if you're looking for the game with the most heart, that's been retold through generations of gaming because it is one of the greatest games ever made. This is that game. We all hear about Final Fantasy and other big release franchises. Too often those games overshadow the best gems. I'm glad to see that this gem has continued to see love throughout the ages, and even now. While it might not be for everyone. It will always be for me, one of my top games of all time. Lunar is a simple game compared to all the crazy, complex games coming out these days, but it continues to prove that you don't have to be complex to be a great game. Expect heartwarming moments, clever dialogue, peak videogame music, lovable characters, and feels.
