MakeRoom is a cute low-poly decorating game with a bite-sized campaign, a solid collection of colorful items, and super fiddly controls. I didn't vibe with it at first, but Kenney's latest title ultimately won me over with charming level themes... and also cats. What's a Kenney? If you enjoy indie games, then you've bumped into at least one of the 40,000+ high-quality free assets Kenney has released since 2014. On the flip side, if you've ever dabbled in asset creation, you've probably looked into Kenney's Asset Forge. Basically, Kenney is awesome for indie devs. Gameplay Freely decorate in a sandbox-style "Create" mode, or "Play" the campaign: 13 themed levels with short lists of objectives. Finishing all levels scores an achievement and takes ~30 minutes of focused play. Controls. There are keyboard shortcuts, but the game can be played using only a mouse: left click to select, scrollwheel to rotate. Technically works with an X-Box Controller, but it's infinitely more fiddly. What Works For Me βœ… Art + Assets. There's a decent selection of adorable low-poly furniture, decorations, plants, and more to mix and match. While not the trendiest catalog, everything looks like it belongs in the same game. βœ… Cats! Special shout-out for cat models and cat-themed furniture. There are dogs and fish, too, but I can't stop laughing at the number of scratching posts and cat shelves. βœ… Flexibility. All items can be re-colored (including a "random color" option), rotated, re-sized, duplicated, and freely placed. There's no grid snap, which is a little annoying when placing shelves, wall panels, sectional couches, or countertops, but also gives you more freedom to create cluttered rooms. βœ… Camera Mode. In-game camera includes a variety of options and filters, and saves photos directly to Steam's screenshot folder for easier sharing. βœ… Object Maker + Workshop Support. Create your own furniture in the object maker and upload the results to the Steam workshop! The object maker is intimidating at first glance, and doesn't include a way to compare the scale of your items to in-game assets, but it's kind of like My Fisher-Price's First Asset Forge . https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3544901211 What Doesn't Work For Me ❎ Fiddly. If you select an asset from the menu, you need to place it or select another item; you can't right-click to delete it (click-click). Once an item is placed, click to open the modification menu and then click the hand to move the item or a modification button (click-click). If you stock up a bookshelf and decide to move it two inches to the left, you need to move the bookshelf and every item on it one-by-one (click-click-drag). There's no autosave. You can only exit to the menu, not to the map. The UI as a whole is clunky and fiddly and click-clicky. ❎ Limited Colors + Art. Every item uses some combination of the same 41 colors, and there's only a few patterns available to use as framed "art." It's strangely restrictive, especially if you have a bone-deep aversion to highly saturated colors or deep love for wood furniture. ❎ "Campaign." The campaign sounds cool in theory: Go to unique locations, fulfill customer requests, unlock new stuff. In practice, it's annoying and a tad uninspired. The themes are fun, but the little house dude tells you to clean up a bit, add a few items of furniture, and -- bam! Level complete in 5 minutes or less. Final Thoughts + Recommendation To be honest, I almost returned this after the agonizingly slow tutorial showcased a lot of click-click-clicking. And then after I forgot to manually save the first room. But I stuck with it, and was eventually charmed by themed levels like "spy headquarters" and cat rooms. Overall, it's clunky, but it's also easy to pick up/put down and nice to chill with while watching TV. There's plenty of player freedom and potential to create unique rooms, and this purchase supports a staple of the indie game dev community. If that sounds cozy, then I recommend this! If you're looking for more realistic art, a more meaningful campaign, and/or better controls, then I'd steer you toward [url=https://store.steampowered.com/app/3151380/Small_Spaces/?curator_clanid=45365863]Small Spaces instead. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3544882804 Follow [url=https://store.steampowered.com/curator/45365863/]Eekz Today for more crafting, life sim, management, strategy, and story-rich recommendations.

I strongly recommend this game for creative people, who like sandboxes where they can create worlds and stories. It's like a hobby, really. I can't help myself putting it closely next to Tiny Glade , Townscaper, games like these. It's very different though. + Plenty of creative possibilities when designing a diorama + Integrated basic 3D modeler is a great feature + Steam Workshop, very nice! + Perfect visual style choice for this price. (Art is expensive) + Quick response from the developer, 2 Updates in the first week, with meaningful improvements + No bugs for me + User generated content integration is great. People are creative Suggestions: I don't think the game necessarily needs these, it's just what I personally think would make my personal experience amazing. - Would like a bit more tweaking into the modeling tools. In certain 3D software, you can easily create some basic shapes. This editor could use more tools, go even further, but i guess it could make it less casual. - "Room" theme is a bit restricting in my opinion, but if this one develops more into a "Diorama" builder, the possibilities would be great. - Camera is restrictive to a certain angle. Would love to create fully viewable dioramas. Disclaimer: I play these types of games from a game dev perspective, while trying to be unbiased. 9/10 execution, great job!

Very cute, very stylish low poly room decorating game! The custom furniture feature is really cool. My only complaint is the lack of an undo button, or a way to return an item to its previous position if you accidentally pick it up. I hope the developer receives enough support for this game that they can add this feature! EDIT: The features I wanted were added! Now I have no complaints! :D

Full disclosure, I p*rated this to try it out, opened it, saw the menu, closed it, deleted the file, opened Steam, bought it, then played it for five hours. Made a mermaid bed. I am chewing on this game. It has given me chunky pastel brainworms. Thank you.

So.... if you are a developer, the name "Kenny" rings a bell, and buying this game should be a no-brainer for you, after all the free assets Kenney has released over they years. They deserve every euro they can get. If you are a casual gamer, who looks for cozyness and likes to decorate stuff - this game is for you. Just let your imagination roll. You have so much freedom, you can build your own furniture, and it's overall just a cozy and lovely experience.
