Making Lovers is easily the best moege out there. It basically takes what appeals in moege and excels at that, and especially nails the romance and comedy parts. I don't remember how many times I have burst out laughing with the absurd jokes and banter that this game brings to me. The romance is pretty much straightforward, unlike other moege, Making Lovers isn't wasting your time in the long common route with a bunch of meaningless choices like other moege. It basically introduces you to a girl, you pick a choice, and then the relationship just progresses from there. The girls are all likeable for me, so no complaints on that front, but Karen is truly special, standing out compared to the rest. With Saki following close behind. Anyway, I would highly recommend this game to anyone who wants a good romcom story.

I am only 5 hours in and I'm having so much fun The characters are just immediately funny and interesting. There's a lot of personality everywhere and overall everything is just gorgeous to look at. Every bit of it is just enjoyable. It doesn't need any built up it's just a great time right off the bat.

Making Lovers is kinda tough for me to recommend. I found it pretty banal and boring for about half the game. A lot of people are praising Karen for having the best story but I think that's very far from the case. I'm not really into "gap moe" or tsundere characters at all, I think it's a really bad trope for an adult frankly. Mashiro's romance is conceptually cute but there's a lot of plot points that just... don't go anywhere. There's some ominous foreshadowing but it's never actually followed through on. The writing is just very fluffy on her and Karen's routes in particular. It sucks because they both are interesting characters. It also portrays LGBT issues in a really weird light, but 99% I can write off as "2010s Japan". However, Saki and Reina's routes are pretty interesting love stories, and Ako... despite the faux incest angle is okay too. I liked their love stories more than I thought I would. This kinda blows though because that means only one fully realized adult character in this VN centered around adult relationships actually has competent writing. Karen and Mashiro hardly have any adult conversations, and Ako and Reina both focus on their dreams for their personal future rather than a family or anything besides fleeting moments here and there. To me the stand out route is probably Reina because it was actually really funny at points and has a cute ending. The common route is non existent, and the story basically focuses on 5 different types of love encounters: Childhood friends, supporting someone, a fateful encounter, faking it, and dating to learn love. When looking at the work from this angle, I think this is why I've set this one to recommended. I normally wouldn't suggest this to an average friend due to how fluffy and boring most of the game is, but I think looking objectively at the loves formed in these different ways is quite interesting. You can see the trappings of something good here. The protagonist is the platonic ideal of what an eroge fan should be. He's not excessively perverted (but will randomly refer to eroge at bizarre points), he's pretty charismatic and quite particular about love. I don't totally like him but he's way more tolerable than other Smee work's protagonists. Overall, a very, very weak recommendation from me, and only from an analytical angle really. The music is average, the TL is okay (I think a lot of the puns in Mashiro and Karen's route suffer from this), and the writing is basic to just okay in the vast majority of the game.

Making Lovers, developed by Smee and published by NekoNyan Ltd., is an adult-themed visual novel that offers a richly layered and immersive experience centered around romance, intimacy, and personal growth. The game places players in the shoes of a customizable protagonist navigating the complexities of modern relationships, desires, and emotional connections. What sets Making Lovers apart from many titles in its genre is its commitment to blending explicit adult content with genuine storytelling, character development, and meaningful choice-driven gameplay, creating an experience that feels both personal and engaging. At its heart, Making Lovers excels in crafting a diverse cast of characters, each with unique personalities, backgrounds, and romantic arcs. The game invites players to explore these relationships through branching dialogue options and decision points that influence not only the immediate story but also the broader trajectory of the protagonist’s love life. The writing strikes a delicate balance between sensuality and emotional depth, avoiding superficiality and instead offering nuanced portrayals of intimacy, vulnerability, and the challenges that come with forging connections. Players can pursue multiple storylines, each offering different tones—from lighthearted and comedic to more serious and dramatic—providing a broad emotional range that keeps the experience fresh and compelling. Gameplay in Making Lovers is structured around the traditional visual novel format but is enhanced by an intuitive interface that makes decision-making fluid and impactful. Players engage in conversations, respond to various situations, and unlock new scenes based on their choices, all while managing the protagonist’s relationships and personal growth. The game incorporates RPG-lite elements such as stats and relationship meters, which add an extra strategic layer by influencing which story branches and intimate moments become available. This mechanic encourages replayability, inviting players to experiment with different approaches to romance and character interaction to discover all possible outcomes and endings. Visually, Making Lovers boasts a polished and attractive art style that combines vibrant character designs with detailed backgrounds. The characters are expressive and thoughtfully animated, bringing their emotions and personalities to life in a way that deepens player engagement. Adult scenes are tastefully rendered with high-quality illustrations and animations that respect the tone of the narrative, balancing eroticism with intimacy and storytelling. The environments, from cozy apartments to lively social settings, are rendered with care and contribute significantly to the immersive atmosphere of the game. The sound design further enriches the experience with a soundtrack that complements the emotional ebb and flow of the narrative. Music ranges from soft and romantic melodies to upbeat and playful tracks, setting the mood for different scenes and encounters. Voice acting is present for many key interactions, adding warmth and personality to the characters and enhancing immersion. Ambient sounds and subtle effects round out the audio experience without distracting from the story, ensuring players remain focused on the unfolding drama and romance. While Making Lovers succeeds in many areas, it does have some limitations that may affect certain players. The pacing can sometimes feel uneven, with dialogue-heavy segments that might test the patience of those more interested in action or faster progression. Additionally, as an adult visual novel, the game’s explicit content and themes may not appeal to everyone, limiting its audience. Some players might also find that despite the branching paths, certain narrative arcs converge or share similarities, which could lessen the feeling of agency over the long term. However, these issues are relatively minor in the context of a game that prioritizes emotional engagement and replayability. In summary, Making Lovers is a standout adult visual novel that combines mature themes with strong storytelling, well-developed characters, and meaningful player choices. It offers a thoughtful exploration of romance and intimacy that goes beyond surface-level erotica to provide a genuinely immersive and emotionally resonant experience. For players who appreciate interactive narratives that delve into the complexities of relationships and personal connection, Making Lovers presents a compelling journey filled with heart, humor, and sensuality. While it may not cater to everyone, those willing to engage with its mature content and nuanced writing will find it a richly rewarding experience that invites multiple playthroughs and deeper exploration. I'd say it's pretty good. If you're into VNs, you'll definitely enjoy it. The comedy was hit or miss sometimes funny, sometimes sometimes way too cliche. Overall though it was enjoyable for sure. I've completed all the routes. Karen's and Saki's stood out to me as the best, great character development and story.
