When I first played Andromeda, I was taking on too much emotional investment and baggage from the original trilogy. That threw me off from the game, because there are quite a few differences between Andromeda and ME1-3. Not just in gameplay, but in style. The tone. The script. What it pushes the player to become. That made me dislike this game, initially. I gave it a rest for over a year!! I picked it up again just this last week. And I am glad that I did. This is an objectively good game. There's genuinely little wrong with it. There are places for improvement, of course (crafting mechanisms can be smoother and less daunty, music isn't AS memorable, the storyline could be a little better), but the core of the game is incredibly solid. It's fun. It's light-hearted. You're not Shepherd. You're Ryder. Please remember that. You're not playing a continuation of the original trilogy. You're playing as a different, flawed, person who wasn't really ever trained for the role they got - not like the larger-than-life figure that was the legendary Commander Shepherd, who was the very best of humanity. At it's heart, ME:Andromeda is a game about human exploration. About beating the odds. About trying to do the right thing. That makes it a lot more human, almost. It's meant to be messy, and the characters are MEANT to be flawed. I think that's an important distinction. In the original trilogy, sometimes the characters were so brilliant. They were so soulful. Every single one of them. In this story, you're not gonna like some of them. And that's okay. I think that's part of the design and the charm of this iteration of the franchise. I'm sorry my review doesn't dive into more technical elements of the game. But as a hardcore fan of Mass Effect, as I am sure many of those reading this are, remember it's not the same. And that's for the best. Play it with an open mind. I promise you that you WILL enjoy it.

After 2 months my Mass Effect marathon concludes, the original trilogy was close to a masterpiece despite its issues (mostly ME1's issues VASTLY impacting the whole trilogy) - but finishing the trilogy made me want to try Andromeda DESPITE the negativity from way back when. And after a good 35 hours what do I gotta say? The game's good. At times great, but it is also fascinatingly mediocre. The combat is the best and i mean THE BEST of the series but the reason why I loved 2 and 3 were the story and the characters along with the RPG elements and mission quality. This game has incredible combat, a promising story intro but a lacking overall impact due to the mission structure and the big nothing burger that is the Kett as the villains. Easily the least interesting villain in the series. They do their job fine, but Saren as much as I disliked him in the endgame was very compelling at the start, the collectors were a hive mind that also did their job but ultimately were more interesting - and the Illusive Man is the Illusive man. This game truly fumbled with its RPG mechanics where on one hand I really liked the change to the dialogue wheel I also feel like they could have implemented a side mechanic for the Paragon/Renegade system even if it wasn't perfect. Because not much that I do really felt like it made an impact in the overall story AND I DID a good chunk of side stuff. Side stuff that mind you, IS REALLY BAD. Which leads me into the biggest issue - the bloat and the puzzles within the bloat. There's a lot of slop missions but the missions that I THOUGHT would come into play later on in the story, the vault reactivations, seemed like they did NOTHING. So I went through absolute hell having to activate the monoliths and the vaults of each stupid planet only to get nothing in return and the absolute hell was draining the life out of me and basically decreased the score of the game by a full 2 points. Elaaden vault was truly the breaking point for my sanity and the fact that NOTHING changes by doing 4/5 vaults is just comically bad. I dont wanna yap too much so i'll do a speedrun of the stuff i like and dislike What I like: - Combat (S tier) - Some characters (Vetra,Drack,Jaal and Peebee) - and of those 4 Vetra and Drack I would say are probably S tier from the whole series. Jaal and Peebee are high A and high B respectively. - The start of the story and the final mission. What I dislike: - Puzzles. Remnant Puzzles are just disgusting and too much. - Planets should have been levels like they were in the trilogy instead of being open worlds. - Story (villains/RPG elements) - TEXTURES this might be a stretch, this might vary, but I was on high settings and the character models looked like they were from Mass Effect 1 - how is that possible? Why do they all look so ugly? The worlds look great, but the character models are just baffling. - The facial expressions are VERY lacking, again, how is this a 2017 game? Uncharted 4 was 2016? Like ME3 even has better expressions than this game. - the amount of back and forth missions is extremely aggravating - the run animations and again in general the animations as a whole should NOT look like they're from Mass Effect 1. - the quantity of missions - too many nothing burger missions, so many icons on maps and just very Ubislop coded. So since the dislikes outnumber the likes, why do i recommend it? Because it's a good enough game, at points it turns into great, but the stuff that ruins it does ruin it. HOWEVER, its something that can be remedied - if you want to play it, rush the story. Don't do the side missions. It's atleast one of the issues that are fixed (and the biggest one). It is a very 7/10 game but for the fact that it has moments where I think the Tempest crew shines (not NEARLY as good as the Normandy crew) I think it's a 7.5 for me. Do i wanna play it again? for the combat sure, but for everything else, that's a no for me dawg. I liked the cast overall but coming from the Normandy family (not crew, genuine family) it's such a... step down. Overall, was it a bad game? No. Should you play it after the Trilogy? ...probably not you won't be missing much. Am i glad I played it? Kinda. Is it overhated? ♥♥♥♥ if i know. As mentioned it's not the worst ME game because the combat carries it, but in every other department it... basically is the worst ME game.

There will always be mixed feelings about this game. If you compare this game to the legendary Mass Effect Trilogy it's like a 6/10 game. If you compare it to other alternative space rpgs like Starfield or Outer Worlds 1-2 it's definitely a 8/10 game. Much better than both. So if you are looking for an alternative to Mass Effect Trilogy, this is still your best option until you get games like Exodus, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn and ofc Mass Effect 5. Check the ''Synth'' channel on Youtube. Dude has a good video about modding Andromeda. This game gets way better with mods. Especially with the FPS mod. Story and characters will still be mid but the combat is really fun, graphics and worlds are beautiful and Tempest is a cool ship. But I still hate to break it to you, there will never be a better space rpg/opera than Mass Effect Trilogy. Those 3 games are like Tolkien's books. You'll never get a better fantasy story/world than Lotr and the Middle Earth, and you'll never get a better space story than Commander Shepard's story.

Honestly, its biggest flaw might've been the name. Forget the "Mass Effect" label, and it's not a bad game.

Let’s be real: Mass Effect: Andromeda had a lot to live up to. Following the legendary Shepard trilogy wasn’t just difficult—it was borderline impossible. BioWare Montreal shot for the stars with Andromeda, hoping to reboot the series in a new galaxy, with new heroes, and a fresh beginning. And while the game stumbles often—particularly at launch—it’s not the disaster people sometimes remember it as. Especially with the Deluxe Edition, which adds helpful gear and extras, Andromeda can still offer a decent sci-fi RPG experience, even if it never quite touches the greatness of its predecessors. Set 600 years after Mass Effect 3, Andromeda follows the Andromeda Initiative, a massive colonization effort that sent human and alien races across the void to settle in the Andromeda galaxy. You play as Ryder, the child of the Initiative’s Pathfinder, thrust into leadership after things go terribly wrong. The core idea is strong: you’re not a soldier anymore—you’re a scout, a diplomat, a settler. Your goal isn’t to win a war, but to find homes, unite species, and unravel ancient mysteries. Unfortunately, the story often feels directionless, especially in its early hours. The main villain—the Kett Archon—is generic, and the pacing struggles under the weight of side content. However, when the game leans into discovery, exploration, and Prothean-esque puzzles through the ancient Remnant technology, it finally begins to click. Ryder’s crew is charming but uneven. Standouts like: -Drack, a surprisingly heartfelt old Krogan -Peebee, a reckless asari researcher with depth -Vetra, a lovable turian scavenger -Jaal, the angara squadmate whose culture becomes key to the plot ...offer some of that classic BioWare magic. Others, like Liam or Cora, feel underdeveloped or awkwardly written. Ryder themselves is less iconic than Shepard, but they’re also more vulnerable, more human—and if you stick with them, their personal growth becomes one of the game’s quiet victories. Hands down, combat and traversal are the highlights of Andromeda. The jetpack adds incredible verticality and mobility to both exploration and combat. You’re no longer just hiding behind chest-high walls—you’re leaping over enemies, dashing across gaps, and comboing powers mid-air. The skill system is flexible: Ryder can mix and match abilities across Tech, Biotic, and Combat trees without being locked into a traditional class. Want to be a sniper who summons biotic explosions and hacks enemy robots? Go for it. It's fluid and empowering. Vehicle exploration with the Nomad is a huge improvement over ME1’s Mako. It handles well, upgrades over time, and makes discovering planets genuinely fun. The Deluxe Edition includes a solid package of cosmetic and gameplay perks: -Scavenger armor set and Pathfinder elite weapons -The Nomad skin for your ride -Extra outfits for Ryder -Pet Pyjak (yes, you can have a space monkey) -A digital soundtrack and multiplayer loot packs While not essential, these extras help make the early hours more comfortable and give a bit more visual flavor—especially helpful given the game’s rocky start. Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: launch state animations. At release, Andromeda was widely mocked for its stilted faces, weird expressions, and occasional bugs. Many of those issues were patched—but first impressions stuck. That said, planets look gorgeous, environments are massive and distinct, and the visual design of places like Havarl, Voeld, and Elaaden is stunning. The alien species—particularly the new Angara—are beautifully designed. The music by John Paesano captures the wonder of space exploration, but lacks the instantly iconic tones of ME1–3. Still, some themes (like “A Better Beginning”) are emotional standouts. Strengths -Excellent, flexible combat system -Deep exploration with a sense of scale -Some memorable companions and alien culture -Gorgeous planetary design -Deluxe Edition adds good variety and convenience Weaknesses -Weak main plot and villain -Uneven writing and pacing -Early-game bugs and facial animation issues (now mostly fixed) -Lacks the weight and moral tension of the original trilogy -Multiplayer is competent but forgettable Mass Effect: Andromeda tried to be a new beginning—but it tripped over its own ambition. Yet beneath the launch memes and patch notes is a solid action-RPG with great combat, beautiful worlds, and occasional sparks of that BioWare brilliance. It’s not the Mass Effect you remember—but it’s still a galaxy worth visiting, especially with the Deluxe Edition to round out the experience. A flawed, often underrated entry that shines brightest when it stops trying to be Mass Effect 4 and starts being Andromeda. Rating: 7/10
