I don’t understand why people say the graphics look bad. This was one of the most artistic VR games I’ve ever seen. Sure, it doesn’t look like Half Life Alyx but which game does? This was a Quest 3 first game. They knew their limitations and tried to mask it with a really good art style, just like back in the day when PC games were optimised. I like the story. The atmosphere and acting were great. They reused some maps and assets throughout the story, but it didn’t feel cheap. I really like how the mask looks. The water droplets looked so good, and it even fogs up when the main character gets excited. I left it on all the time. The spider mechanics were really creative and well made. The controls are a bit janky. I felt so restricted when playing. They were clearly inspired by Half-Life: Alyx, but it feels like they only borrowed the weaker parts of Alyx’s control design. I don’t like how some interactions are bound to specific hands, like holding bags only with the left hand. I wanted to rack the AK-47 with my right hand because that feels most natural to me, and it makes it easier to check if a round is chambered. But as soon as I let go my right hand, the gun snaps into a very uncomfortable angle, and I have to bend my wrist too far just to see the other side of the gun. Also, I don’t understand why it grabs the charging handle automatically, I keep wasting bullets by accident. If they wanted to add a mechanic for racking it without grabbing, it should have been physics-based because the grab area is huge. For the first half of the game, during emergencies, I was constantly greeted with a pistol that has no magazine. Because you can yank the magazine out without pressing the release, and when I hold my gun with both hands I naturally hold my grip buttons. So whenever I put my gun down, I frequently removed the magazine without noticing. There also weren’t enough sections to actually use all my bullets. I kept hearing, “I can’t grab any more magazines,” so I rarely bothered with stealth. You read all my rant about the controls, but despite all my issues, I’m still incredibly immersed in this game. It’s one of the few that truly achieved that for me. It was really cool to be in the Metro universe.

The best way I can sum up this game is that it's more of a "VR game set in the Metro universe" and not a "Metro game but in VR". If you go into this game expecting one of the previous Metro games, except experienced through VR you may end up disappointed. I'm not sure I would recommend it for full price, but having picked it up for around $35 AUD I feel like I got my money's worth.

This game is pretty great, although not perfect. It never ceases to amaze and disappoint me how a good game can end up with middling reviews just because people want to invent things to complain about. There's no reason this should be "Mixed" for "Recent Reviews" or otherwise. First of all, Vertigo has made a few shooters in VR already and they know what they're doing. I was afraid this might end up being a little too similar to Arizona Sunshine but it does *everything* differently. It's definitely it's own game. For starters, make sure you have a few changes of pants. This game does not hold back on the scares. It's dark, it's tense and it makes you paranoid that something will jump out from every corner. On the negative side, I did end up having to turn on Arachnophobia Mode, even though I'm not afraid of spiders, just because they will teleport onto your face and you can take a bunch of cheap deaths that way. Very annoying. If they were more like the headcrabs from HLA, where you could bat them out of the air, they would have been a lot more reasonable. You can turn them off any time, though, so I suggest trying it with them on and only turning them off if you get annoyed. They do provide a lot of atmosphere that gets lost when you turn them off. The story is decent, but weird. I've never played a Metro game before so I don't know if they're normally this weird but, as a newcomer to the series, it was weird. It did drag a little at the beginning but became reasonable once the adventure really gets underway. The story is a lot more in depth than Arizona Sunshine but it's still not really the main draw. The atmosphere and gameplay are still the winners here. Overall, $30-40 for a 12 hour campaign from a veteran VR studio with great atmosphere, pretty good combat, some unique gameplay mechanics and a decent story is well worth it, IMO. I had a lot of fun. Check it out.

Really enjoying it after playing HL:Alyx. It’s scary and jumpy with some nice mechanics. I feel the set places feel more creepy than HL. Definitely worth a purchase on PC wireless. Tips: Don’t play it like HF:Alyx. If you run out of ammo you can punch things. Just don’t punch your walls or friends. To conserve ammo if you do a partial reload take the half full clip and throw it over your shoulder to save the ammo to your backpack and pull a new full clip from your chest. This way it collects the ammo for you so you don’t lose any. If there is a bullet in the chamber don’t cock it as you’ll loose bullets. You can temporarily dual wield with found weapons. To check how much ammo you have left you have to check your magazines, this sometimes means you have to pull out your clip to see the bullets. Always prepare your med gun with a new vial. Enjoy

I genuinely think HL:Alyx spoiled VR gaming for some people. Is this game amazing? No, it's probably a solid 7/10 The game is too dark, I had to crank my brightness both in game and on my headset to see fricken anything The controls on quest feel like an afterthought but are serviceable (I think the bag mechanic could've been a single entity rather than feeling like two separate bags depending on which shoulder you grab from) When it comes to looting the environment, it also feels like an afterthought: you can only open certain things, ammo cans wall containers, very rarely an obvious chest, sometimes with an arsenal and sometimes with absolutely nothing; I think this game would've been more enjoyable with the ability to open a random desk drawer and find a few loose shells in it rather than dedicated refill stations. The stealth feels ok with the ability to melee enemies in the back of the head for an instakill, but boy oh boy is it annoying to get. Enemies have a sixth sense sometimes and you can kill someone without them making a sound but if you trigger their awareness the whole room *might* know you're there. The game would've benefited from a knife that you could use as a close combat weapon to deal with enemies up close or even short range with a throw option. Lastly there only feels like one section that I felt was memorable which is a shame because the atmosphere overall was pretty great, sure it was overly dark even for a metro game but I got lost in the games world: The clunky nature of the pack system added to the peril, constantly checking to make sure that every gun was loaded; recharging my flashlight to make sure I don't get caught in the dark; listening for enemies eating corpses or npc dialogue so I can turn off my light to try and sneak around by basically feeling my way around in the dark to get an angle on them for an easy stealth kill; once under fire, trying to get an angle just right to avoid getting hit and lining up a headshot based solely on the enemies headlamp; crawling through vents breaking down my gun around every corner to make sure I don't get jumped. Everything in this game made me feel like I was in danger and it was pretty great! Random growls or drips or shuffling in one ear or the other making me turn on my heel ready for a fight. No spoilers but one part of this game lasted so long due to inherent gamer nature of wanting to explore everywhere but the intended path, and it made regret exploring because of how tense it was, but it gave me moments of panic because I knew I was in this area before but everything looked untouched and it ended with me standing at the end of the area with my head dipped and my arms slack sighing with relief that it was over, and this is coming from someone that plays every horror game and watches every horror movie they can get their hands on because I'm trying to find something that will actually scare me. I don't know if it's just because this is VR and it's a horror medium I haven't had too much experience with but it definitely made me feel like I needed a gun in my hand at all times. I would definitely recommend the game overall, despite its' flaws it was a solid entry into the VR space and I really hope this team makes more games and improves on what they've created here.
