Positive: Still the best VR game ever made. Negative: Will ruin every other VR game for you. Nothing else comes close. If a majority of VR titles had come even near to this, VR would probably be much more of a force in gaming, as opposed to remaining to be a cool gimmick. Alyx does not feel like a gimmick at all. The attention to detail is absurd. Every key on the piano in the hotel works. That pretty much sums it up.
Half-Life Alyx – A Love Letter to Gravity, Headcrabs and Classic PC Gamers I have been playing Half Life since the days of smoky internet cafés, Gauss jumps on Crossfire and 60 Hz CRT monitors buzzing on the desk. So when I say Half Life Alyx did not just meet my expectations but stepped over them and looked back as if asking “You still with me?”, that should tell you something. This is not just a good VR game. This is a real Half Life game that exists inside VR and it respects both identities. A World That Feels Built Around Your Hands City 17 in Alyx does not only look good, it feels physically present. You do not admire the world from a distance. You poke it, search through it and move things around simply because you wonder if you can. And the game constantly answers yes. Drawers open the way someone actually looking for ammo would open them. You draw on dirty windows, flip bottles with your wrist and stack random junk out of curiosity. Nothing feels like a tech demo. Everything aims to immerse you. The detail is so strong that you find yourself behaving like a real person in a real place, not like someone sprinting between objective markers. Story: Familiar DNA With a New Angle I went in with concerns. A prequel starring Alyx in a timeline we roughly know. Could it really surprise me? It does. The writing is tight, efficient and quietly emotional. Alyx is not Gordon with dialogue. She is her own character, sarcastic, resilient and human in a way that fits perfectly into the Half Life universe. Her conversations with Russell balance tension and humor without weakening the atmosphere. And since this is Valve, the ending does not simply work. It reshapes how you view the entire series. If Half Life has lived in your mind for decades, Alyx touches very old nerves in very new ways. Gunplay: Slow, Precise and Stressful in the Best Way If you come from chaotic and fast old school shooters like I do, Alyx feels like time has been slowed just enough to make every movement count. There is no lazy hip fire. You line up your shots, steady your hand, peek from behind cover and physically duck as bullets snap past your head. Reloading becomes a small moment of panic: eject the magazine, grab a new one, slam it in and rack the slide, all while a headcrab zombie screams at you from a few feet away. The weapon selection is small but intentional. Every gun feels unique. Upgrades change how the weapon behaves, not just the numbers. A reflex sight or a shotgun grenade launcher changes your entire approach to combat. VR Design Done the Right Way Alyx shows what happens when a studio designs for VR from the start instead of adapting a flat game. Movement options are thoughtful and accessible. The gravity gloves are a brilliant piece of design. You point at an item, flick your wrist and catch it in the air. It feels like grounded science fiction and quickly becomes second nature. Interactions are consistent. If something looks like you can grab it, you can. Doors behave like real doors. Ladders behave like real ladders. Your brain stops asking “Will this work?” and simply continues the experience. Most VR games eventually show cracks in the illusion. In Alyx, those cracks are rare. Atmosphere and Horror: Effective Without Cheap Tricks The game understands that VR horror is different. A headcrab jumping at your face while your flashlight shakes in your hand is not the same as seeing it on a screen. Alyx uses this smartly. It relies on sound, darkness and tension instead of sudden jump scares. Jeff deserves a mention without spoilers, because it is a sequence you remember as an experience, not just a level. Audio, Music and Overall Polish The sound design is outstanding. The creak of metal, the hiss of Combine radios and the wet growls of enemies that get too close all reinforce the world around you. The soundtrack is subtle and reserved. It steps in only when necessary and always at the right moment. The polish is clear everywhere: animations, lighting, physics and environmental storytelling all feel deliberate and refined. Performance and Comfort Technically, Alyx feels like a VR game where the engine and art team work in complete harmony. Once you tune your settings, performance stays stable. Comfort options are flexible. New players can ease into it while experienced VR users can play with full freedom. This is a game that respects your senses just as much as your hardware. Verdict: The New Benchmark Half Life Alyx is not perfect, but it is the closest VR has come to a complete and uncompromising AAA single player experience that truly understands the platform. As someone who grew up with Half Life and spent decades trying to recapture that feeling, I can say without hesitation that Alyx is not only nostalgia. It is a preview of the future of immersive storytelling. If you have a VR headset and still have not played it, you are not saving it for later. You are delaying one of the best experiences VR has to offer. 10/10
Yes. The answer to the question - is it really THAT good that it justifies buying a VR headset JUST for that one game? Yes, it is. I`ve been pondering said question for years until I finally bought the Meta Quest 3 and Alyx. It is so unbelievably immersive. The graphics are beautiful. Once you get the hang of the controls it`s easy to move around. Also - regarding the end of the game - it is stunning, it gave me chills. And you know we rarely have that these days when it comes to games. My hardware: Intel i7- 7600k, 32 GB RAM, RTX 4060. I could play that on ultra settings. My advice: Connect your rig to the router via ethernet cable. It works with a good Wifi 6 dongle and a fast connection, but you want to buy "Virtual Desktop" on the meta quest shop so you will need a fast LAN-connection, too. Virtual Desktop makes running Alyx on the MQ3 more hassle free, really. I love this game. Buy it. Enjoy it. It is as ground breaking as HL and HL² were back then.
