pros: - the nemesis system (although it's not "100% polished" here yet. the better version is in the sequel) - interesting narration around the player's deaths and resurrections, instead of just "you died, but let's pretend it never happened and reload the last checkpoint" cons: - half of the story takes place around the black gate, which is a very gloomy, uninteresting, same-looking-everywhere location in the whole LotR universe - climbing towers to unlock warp points. not a bad format, but it's super repetitive and boring. compare it to Zelda BotW/TotK, where each tower has some variation. for example, some can't be climbed directly and require gliding from a nearby mountain, while others require digging underground and entering from below - pressing two buttons on the gamepad at the same time. if only the (Y)+(B) combination existed, it'd be okay, but implementing all 4 combinations is too much. this also needs a larger input window, since the game often interprets the input as an isolated (Y) or (B) press instead - irl legal aspect of the nemesis system prevented other games from using this cool mechanic, yet the studio abandoned it after only 2 games
Shadow of Mordor is the game that introduced the Nemesis System, and it did so... flawlessly. The perfect example? Ratbag. Long live the Rat King. (Pun absolutely intended. 😄) The way the game organically introduces you to the Nemesis System through characters like Ratbag is brilliant. You don’t get overwhelmed, you just slowly realize how dynamic, personal, and unique the Uruks are. They remember you. They rise through the ranks. They surprise you. Even today, the game has aged like fine wine. The different Uruks, the engaging story, and the gritty atmosphere of Middle-earth still hold up really well. That said, let’s be real. After about 50-ish hours, the Nemesis System is the only thing truly keeping you playing. It’s the star of the show. The rest of the game, while solid, feels more like the foundation for something bigger. And that “something bigger” is Middle-earth: Shadow of War. That’s where it’s at. (Refer to my Shadow of War review 😉) Is this a must-play? Not necessarily. If you want to experience the Nemesis System for the first time, absolutely, it’s still fantastic. But if you're choosing between the two, Shadow of War is the more complete evolution of the idea. I grabbed both games in a bundle for $6.99, total no-brainer. At that price? I just jumped in and played them back-to-back. Zero regrets.
Coming back to Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor after a few years and honestly… it still holds up way better than I expected. The combat feels great right away, weighty, brutal, and smooth once you get back into the rhythm. But the real star is still the Nemesis system. No two playthroughs feel the same, and it’s wild how quickly you start remembering specific Orc captains who killed you, ran away, or came back stronger just to ruin your day again. That personal rivalry aspect is something a lot of games still haven’t managed to top. The world isn’t massive by today’s standards, but it’s focused, atmospheric, and nails the grim Middle earth vibe. Revisiting it now, the game feels like a reminder of how creative AAA games can be when they take risks. If you missed it the first time or just want to experience the Nemesis system again, it’s absolutely worth another run.
