Mindlock – The Apartment is an interesting game that is extremely well crafted. The art is unique, the soundtrack engaging (especially the music video!), the voice-acting superb, and the story ends well. The game is a traditional point-and-click adventure that is heavy on find-and-use inventory puzzles. There are numerous characters to meet and dialog trees to traverse. There are many objects in the environment to inspect or interact with. Luckily, your pockets are bottomless so you can pick up and carry a plethora of items. The story focuses on Colin, a young man in the throes of an existential crisis. He has lots of ‘issues,’ hates his job, and is generally unhappy with his life. Trapped in his apartment, he walks around with shoulders down, as if he is carrying the weight of a world-gone-wrong. He ponders such questions such as “Who am I?” and “Why am I here?” Roof Cut Media did a great job of bringing elements of Colin’s personality to life. His personal demons are tangible entities that actively interfere with his happiness. He steps into his memories and visits places outside of his apartment. As a result, the player can visualize Colin’s inner and outer struggles. Through it all, I really hoped he would break free and do something positive. However, after several hours, I wanted to shout at Colin, “Just get over it…’” I admit I grow weary with people who remain stuck in their past and so, my frustration with Colin grew as I played on. This was exacerbated by the fact that there is no way to move Colin across a scene quickly. Instead, he walks from one side of the screen to the next, over and over. The game includes a good mix of puzzle types: Fixing a clock, finding-and-using, locating clues in the environment, and outwitting other characters. Some of the inventory puzzles seemed a bit obtuse. Opening a can of pet food with a stop sign? Not the first thing I thought of. Back in the days of Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle, this was the norm. Perhaps I am out of practice, but some of the puzzles reminded me of the infamous ‘cat hair mustache’ conundrum that showed up in Gabriel Knight 3. Mindlock auto-saves regularly to a single slot. Thus, the option of rolling back to a prior point in the story is not available. If you miss an achievement, prepare to replay the game. About half of the achievements are story-related and cannot be missed. The others require one or more actions that may or may not be obvious. Mindlock is an absolute treasure of an adventure game. The story, the humor, the music, and the references completely hooked me. It has everything that made the classics timeless, while still feeling completely original. Since I played the demo and saw that sticker of the three-headed monkey on the bed, I knew I was going to fall in love with it. Every detail is well thought out, and it's exactly what I was looking for: something that grabs your attention, makes you think, and gives you some laughs along the way. What really impressed me is how it handles deep topics like conformity, depression, trauma, and complicated relationships, but it does so in such an effective and fun way. It makes you reflect, but without losing the entertainment factor, and the message stays with you. 10/10, highly recommend it for any point-and-click fan. I only wish I could forget it so I could experience it all over again.

10/10 Es ist ein SO GUTES SPIEL! Es ist zwar ein sehr kurzes Spiel, aber es schafft in der Zeit eine sehr gute Story zu erzählen (Und mich auch sehr persönlich zu treffen, wie ähnlich vieles von dem ist, was der Hauptprotagonist Colin durchmacht bzw. die Art und weise welche Struggles er hat.) Ich freue mich auf Zukünftige weitere Spiele und hoffe auf mehr von dieser Art von Stories. :3

Crazy/Deep stuff to find in this one I am not often inclined to write a comment about a game, but I just played through this in one sitting. I just couldn't get myself to stop playing. What this developer team have done here is fantastic! The cylce of life in which many of us get trapped because of whatever reasons is excactly what this game uses to drag you deep into your thoughts. I think many of us have aspects of life which they may want to change and sometimes playing a game like this and thinking about the situation is the kick that gets the ball rolling. For me the value of this game is worth it even tho it's a short experience. 10/10
