Got this game on sale along with the rest of the MH games on Steam after having binged Wilds to 100%. As a long time lover of creature collectors and a new MH fan, this game scratched just the right itch. The turn based gameplay is rock paper scissors at it's most basic, and intense memorization and resource management at it's most advanced. There's also lots of build customization available in what skills your monsters have, what equipment you have, and what loadout of items you take into battle with you. All these aspects I think serve to brilliantly capture the essence of Monster Hunter in a turnbased format. The story is simple but it's got an earnest charm to it. I fully intend to 100% this game and then see what the sequel has in store.

The actual "story" portion of this game can be written off as a really corny, saturday morning cartoon. The real meat is in the gameplay, I guess. It has a fun, rock-paper-scissors approach to its combat that keeps things fresh enough. You explore the map to find monster dens, where you can grab more eggs to hatch for your monster collection. It's not half-bad overall. Fairly competent port of a 3DS game that is easily worth around $15 if you are bored and want to try a new jrpg, or you're a big monster hunter fan.

monster hunter stories remastered is worth buying. played it on the 3ds years ago and purchased the game on sale and i regret nothing. beautifully remastered, banger game, banger monster cast, banger music. what more could you want? if you like monster hunter and pokemon do yourself a favor and buy this game (and monster hunter stories 2 after). these games are genuinely top 10 favorite games of all time for me. they are cozy and heartwarming <3
