This is a surprisingly good game. I went in honestly expecting to not enjoy it or find it an obnoxious pokemon rip off, but the gameplay is vastly more engaging and interesting. Funny enough one of the closest comparisons I can make of recent games is Expedition 33? Let me explain. Gameplay wise you can basically carry around 6 monsters, but you only use one at a time in combat beside you. It will move by itself, but you can order it around with kinship points by landing special timed event attacks that require QTE, or by beating the enemy monster in rock/paper/scissors normal attacks like fire emblem. You can also swap out your monster anytime, then when you max your kinship bar mid fight you can ride your monster to do more powerful attacks. Overall it's a more complex battle system than I expected and it really differentiates itself from any other jrpg I've played. I compared it to E33 because it's sort of turn based with live play sections where you play QTE. It was unique and fun, however a major gripe I have is there is a lot of RNG in learning monster patterns so getting killed in fights will likely happen until you learn the patterns and how to counter the monster's normal attacks. Also getting new monsters can be exhausting RNG wise, as you have to enter a monster den, then explore it, then go searching in a nest after maybe fighting a monster, then you might get the monster you want. Getting skills is also done through this method, so optimizing your monsters will take forever. Next up is the story, and to be honest it's your typical early gen Pokemon story. It's mostly targeting kids, and is about the power of friendship and loving your monsters, etc. It's not mind blowing, but it's serviceable for the game this is. Just don't expect to be blown away, but the finale was pretty cool and some of the writing was funny. Finally, content. In terms of the maps to explore they are decently varied even if they look questionable due to this being a 3DS port. Once you unlock flying, navigating becomes much easier and nicer. The main story by itself is around 20-25 hours so a decent length. If you do a lot of the side quests and special monster hunts you can go to 35-40 hours without reaching post-game. I barely dabbled in the post-game, but you unlock like 10-15 new monsters to get, and two endgame modes where you can constantly battle your heart out. It's a decent offering for the price of the game and if you loved playing the game you'll have fun in the endgame. Overall, the game was a good time. If you like Pokemon, or want to play a game with some cool monsters and different gameplay from typical JRPGs this is the game for you. I liked most of the game a lot, my only gripes are fights have a decent level of RNG, and getting new monsters can be an exhausting ordeal. I'd recommend this game and give it a 7/10.

Pokemon for PC except its good and not a cash grab, it does take a bit to unlock some of the main mechanics, power through the story for a few hours and you're in the money!

I love this game! Played it first on 3DS in 2017 for 90hrs and had a blast! Sure, there are some flaws like the RNG in fights (in Part 2 they fixed this); but oh golly, it's so whimsy. Collect some poogies all over the world? Some rhyme-dropping-grandpa? Approximatly 850 puns about cats/paws/fur? You're in for a treat. Plus, I really think it looks quite good on PC (and Deck). And the artstyle aged well. The second installment of this series is more mature, sure. But this one just hits some sweet spot.

Monster Hunter Stories takes the iconic Monster Hunter formula and flips it on its head, trading the signature real-time hunting for turn-based RPG combat and a heartfelt narrative about friendship and discovery. It’s a delightful spin-off that opens the door for new audiences while still offering familiar nods to series veterans. If you’ve ever wanted to bond with your monsters instead of just hunting them, this game lets you ride, raise, and battle alongside your very own “Monsties” in a vibrant, story-driven adventure. At its core, Monster Hunter Stories is a traditional JRPG with a strategic twist. Battles operate on a rock-paper-scissors system between Power, Speed, and Technical attack types, requiring tactical choices rather than button mashing. Your primary companions are the Monsties—monsters you hatch from eggs, raise, and evolve. Each species has unique abilities, elemental affinities, and styles, encouraging you to mix and match your team for maximum synergy. The bond you build with these creatures is front and center, emphasized by the story and your ability to ride them in exploration and combat. The world is a colorful and inviting one, full of quests, dungeons, and secrets, providing a breezy but satisfying adventure that’s lighter on grinding compared to the mainline Monster Hunter series. The narrative is charming and approachable, focusing on the young Rider’s journey to uncover their destiny and save their village. While the story isn’t particularly deep or complex, its themes of friendship, trust, and growth shine through in well-written moments and engaging characters. The game balances lighthearted humor with a sense of epic adventure, making it accessible for both younger players and longtime fans. The cel-shaded art style is bright, expressive, and perfectly suited to the tone of the game. Character designs are charming and distinct, while monsters look adorable yet imposing. The soundtrack complements the whimsical atmosphere, with memorable tunes that range from energetic battle themes to serene exploration melodies. Pros: -Unique turn-based combat with strategic depth -Wide variety of Monsties to collect and customize -Engaging, family-friendly story -Beautiful, colorful art style -Accessible to newcomers and series fans alike Cons: -Some repetitive fetch quests -Combat system, while strategic, can feel simple over time -Limited multiplayer features compared to mainline MH games -Story pacing slows down in mid-game Monster Hunter Stories is a refreshing and heartfelt departure from the usual Monster Hunter grind. Its focus on monster companionship, turn-based battles, and narrative adventure offers a charming experience that stands well on its own. Whether you’re a Monster Hunter fan looking for a new way to experience the world or a JRPG lover wanting a fun, monster-filled quest, this game is an excellent choice. Recommended for fans of JRPGs, monster-collecting games, and anyone craving a lighter, story-rich Monster Hunter experience. Rating: 9/10
