I love Tales of Symphonia. It was my favorite game of all time for a long time. Even now it's still in my top 5. I wanted to like Abyss and Bersiria, but they just never really grabbed me quite as much. As of writing this, I've yet to try Phantasia, Eternia, Graces, Xillia, or Zestiria out of fear of further disappointment. It's not that they're bad games, far from it, I just felt let down in comparison. It just felt like something was missing. That is not the case here. I quite enjoy Vespiria, from what I've played of it so far. I took a break, but only because I was having some RPG burnout (Oblivion, Planescape Torment, Romancing SaGa 2, Trails in the Sky, and some others I don't remember). But out of all of those, I was enjoying Vespiria the most, and it's the one from that time of my life I find myself most wanting to revisit. At first, all the characters seemed to be a little generic by themselves, but their interactions with each other more than made up for what individual shortcomings they may have appeared to have at first glance. The writing walks a fine line between being too silly and taking itself too seriously. Fujishima and Sakuraba's art style and soundtrack are charming and listenable as ever. The combat system is neither too barebones nor too complex. Troy Baker, Sam Riegel, DC Douglas, and other well known actors' voice work in the english dub as the main characters is just as solid as one would expect from their pedigrees. The worst I can rate any aspect of the game is a B+ and that's if I'm being cynical. It's a real shame that since 2008 was such a stacked year for RPGs- Chain of Memories, Crisis Core, The World Ends With You, Wrath of the Lich King, Yakuza 2, Fallout 3, Fable 2, and Persona 4, just to name the few I remember- it seems that Vespiria fell through the cracks for a lot of people. It may not be the best but it's still a solid choice from the golden age of gaming.

Symphonia is still king but this one isn't bad Characters are all great and Three Dimensional, story feels more functional and is more of an after thought at times. Game is a walkthrough essential if you want to 100% with missible and failable quests; not necessary a bad thing if your into that your into it just means more time spent in the world. Game is great if you want to Doom scroll, just put all characters on auto and only move the character in between battles. Combat isn't as fun as Symphonia Lloyd was more acrobatic with his move set, Yuri has to many moves where you knock enemies down and you have to wait for them to get back up. The game has some very underwhelming dungeons, many are very combat focused and the puzzles are very straight forward. BIG HINT game has some nasty difficulty spikes with bosses especially the secret ending boss, if your having trouble just change the difficulty to easy, I found out you still get achievements even on the easy difficulty. Some of the bosses just aren't fair late game when they have ultimates that wipe out the party no with room to dodge. Stick with sub as the dub has some bad performances Patty and Karol are the most irritating in the dub as well as changed tone for certain scenes. This game is also really long as most rgps of this type are. I beat the main quest at 60hrs with only half of things unlocked. Its not bad but I was expecting a better story, its not Tales of Berseria bad but Symphonia had a much more compelling villain that I actually empathized with. With a world that was much more politically complex and a story that wasn't left on the back burner at moments. I still recommend it but I would play Symphonia first.

Fantastic game, don't get to frusterated by the dog boss in Emead Hill, he is balenced poorly and exteremely difficult for so early in the game. But the rest of the game isn't that bad. IKn fact he is commonly considered the hardest bost in the game.

This is my favorite Tales game and it excels in the most areas of any of them. Story, voice acting, world building, music, pacing, content, its all fantastic stuff. The combat system, while still good, can be a bit of an acquired taste though. However if i were to criticize it for one thing it would be this: you NEED to play this game with a guide. Full stop. Not because its confusing or anything like that, but because of missable content. Out of all the JRPGs ive played in my entire life, Vesperia takes the cake for the sheer STAGGERING amount of missable stuff and how easy it is to miss it. We're talking skits, voiced cutscenes, alternate outfits, side quests, skills, artes, weapons, trinkets, you name it. Literally even the BONUS DUNGEON is permanently missable if you don't go to a certain place at a certain time in the game. Anyone who has tried to 100% this game can attest to how ridiculous it can be. But like i said, IF you're able to stomach consulting a guide every 10 seconds like Spongebob asking the Magic Conch what he should do next, then its really is one of the best JRPGs out there.
