Honestly doesn't even feel like Monster Prom anymore and I think I like it. I find the new mechanics fun but I do think I get some whiplash every time I decide to play this game right after playing the first or second game because of the differences. The store in the menu is less interesting in my opinion; maybe it gets actually good stuff in it later and I just haven't gotten there but its just gachapon for art where as in the last game you could buy skins for characters, new playable characters, art, and drinks to help you in a different mode. I avoided talking about this in my review for the second game because it wasn't as bad there but I'm not a fan of the DLC content, it's good content but having to pay so I can play as more than the basic 4 characters is not an improvement because in the last game you got a free Helltaker character to play as and could also buy a Fridge to play as with in-game currency. I get that it's not required and doesn't even add too much but I would just prefer a complete game where I don't need to pay for small things and rather pay for something more worth my hard-earned money like the first game's DLC. Regardless of the DLC rant, it's a great game, even better with friends (moreso than the first 2 games) and it has so much content. Keep in mind that none of the games require your friends to have the game or controller, you can do it all yourself with a simple screenshare so that's a win, all I can complain about are the minor shortcomings which wont matter to most people anyways.

I mean this with no exaggeration, this is one of the most well-crafted games I have ever played. I love all of the characters, the humour is just my kind of thing, and the regular gameplay loop, while simplistic, is addicting. Even at release, the game would have been good enough to become one of my favourites. But then, they released the End of the Road ending. This game had me laughing my ass off, followed by holding back literal tears all in the span of a few hours. Without spoiling too much, please complete the End of the Road ending before writing this game off. As intense of a tonal shift as that ending is for a game like this, I promise, it is worth it.

Pretty fun, I think this is fun to play with friends when you're just chilling and don't want to play a game that takes too much effort.

I wrote a very long, critical review about Monster Camp, a game I found loathsome. The sequel, Roadtrip, fixed near everything I had a complaint about. The rules are clearly communicated, you don't need a spreadsheet open at all times to avoid losing all of your progress. The tone has graduated from that of an edgelord teen. It feels like it wants you to enjoy playing it, even when you lose. I'm not sure WHY this game took such a drastic turn. My disdain for Prom and Camp is not a popular opinion. People liked those games for specific reasons, and Beautiful Glitch risked alienating them. In the same way that any "weird" departure in a franchise risks being known as "The Bad One". They did not make the sequel to Horse, but they made a damn fine Zebra. I genuinely like this game. Its' sense of humour, its' art, it's efforts to expand its' own horizons, to explore and search for comedy in more than one place. And it attempts a difficult manuever: writing dialogue for the Player Characters, potentially rubbing up against people's headcanons. They attempt to let characters bond with each other, and you vicariously. And they pull it off! Now, each "game" of Roadtrip is... very long. You need to commit to an afternoon for it, it's not something you can pick up and play for a few minutes to a half hour. But it's so packed to bursting that I really don't know what else they could have done about it, what other fat could be trimmed. The only other downside is the "End of the Road", because it retreats back to the opaque rules of previous games, as well as far more time potentially wasted if it decides you fail. But it's not mandatory. Monster Roadtrip is the game I wanted from this franchise. It's the game I've been waiting for, and what I always believed it could be. I hope Monster Con does not lose the momentum this series has gained. I hope this wasn't a fluke.
