Type of Game: Romance Visual Novel (Manage your Day) Length: About 3h (for all 4 routes) Story: 7/10 Art: 10/10 „It’s love love love that makes the world go round round round” – the quote from the protagonist of the game summarizes the game pretty well. Witches x Warlocks is a very short otome game, where you play as a witch or warlock named Fay Nightshade. While they are seemingly famous for their matchmaking skills and matchmaking parties (which they tend to mention VERY often), they have fully forgotten to study for the upcoming final exam and now only have a week left. Fay tries to use their charm on basically everyone available to make them help with the studies and manages to find four people. Zero – their childhood friend, a poltergeist, who is often enough annoyed by Fay’s carefree attitude and behavior, but still helps them out every time. Daimon – a Frankenstein creature, who is very gentle, shy and takes care of Fay as their roommate and friend. Carmilla – a cute vampire and Fay’s coworker, who is really susceptible to flattery (especially if it’s baseless flattery that basically equals her to a goddess) and will help Fay out, if they praise her a lot. Lawrence – a (cute) werewolf, who works at the shop, where Fay starts working part time. While he is grumpy at first, he soon starts to enjoy their time together (especially after they promise him that he will get a lot of meat for helping them out). His romance route is only available in the DLC. As for the gameplay, this is a very basic version of a “manage your day” game, where you can decide what Fay will do every day: Either they can brew some potions, or learn a spell from one of the characters or work part time. After 7 days, the final exam will be held and, depending on what you’ve learned and how many potions you have, you either pass or fail. I recommend to have every kind of potion at least once every day, even before the exam (because you will need them!), and to brew many potions for the exam, so you definitely pass. Brewing potions and learning spells is what you will be doing most of the time actually, so do not expect much dialogue in this game. You’ll have some short dialogue scenes in-between days or, if you learn spells from a character. But they are not very “deep” and usually just pretty funny. In general, you should view this game as a bunch of cute short stories that you can read through in one sitting. All in all, I do like this game. It’s especially well-made considering it’s a free one, so I would definitely recommend it, if you want to read something short and have a few hours of free time. However, I was not really impressed by most of the routes. While I really liked Zero’s route, I didn’t really like both Carmilla’s and Daimon’s routes because it seemed a bit forced. With Carmilla’s route it even felt a bit like Fay’s personality changed (they became a lot more “aggressive”, which did not really suit their personality in my opinion). This is a very cute Otome albeit short, I like Halloween/fantasy settings, the love interests are all interesting. Also the game play is very straightforward and easy after you know what to do. I really liked this VN. I do wished this was longer, I do wished the Love Interests had a proper route (especially Zero), the romance is quite rushed but it didn't take the enjoyment, especially when this game is mostly free and is established as a short game in the get go. Overall I do recommend to try this VN out
The game has a well written storyline and to compliment it its characters are well rounded and have their own personalities and looks that work well with the setting and the overall fell of the game. The addition of voice acting add a nice fell and add more of a uniqueness to the characters personality, as for the art style its very well done and fits the radder light hearted story of the game. The game is fun and a good experience.
A warning that I played this with the DLC. It's a fairly simple game to get used to. One thing that you have to be aware of that it is a slight stat-raiser i.e. building potions to learn but most of it's easy to get used to that you won't need a guide at all, or at least I didn't need one. As a fan of Nifty Visuals, this one didn't disappoint save for the fact that it is relatively short, which makes sense for a free game. If you did like this one, you should try out the Royal Alchemist one and maybe wait for Royal Order. I can vouch for Royal Alchemist although it's a lot more tricky as it is also a stat-raiser but the outcomes are largely satisfying that I still can't forget about it since its release. Likewise, I can say the same for Witches x Warlocks. The art is high quality with the chibi sprites adding on to the overall charm of the game. The writing is, of course, the whole reason why I stayed. They write the routes relatively well with great characterization and consistency. And since this game is more of a happy type of thing, you won't have to worry about more heavier/darker themes though they are slightly included in the game itself such as the whole vampire hunting for my lovely Carmilla, the fading with Zero, and also the harassment with Damion, plus the whole hunting/pack thing with Lawrence . Though, as I have said, they're not deeply tackled as in your character will experience them. It's more of a thing that has happened already and/or is currently slightly ongoing as with Lawrence, Zero, and a sprinkle of it with Carmilla but no further diving into these expositions is done and it's, frankly, over by the end of the game. So, yes, while the love interests have some things going on with them, you are mostly going to be concerned with just the magic lessons. There are some aspects that I did wish they would have tackled that are included in the spoiler I mentioned, but it is a simple happy game that's slightly just stressful so it's not necessary, but, if the developers choose to do so, they could make another game more focusing on those aspects so it is an opportunity. And I will definitely jump on the opportunity to spend more time with Carmilla across Europe if needed . As for the other aspects of this game, it really does scratch that itch if you're looking for a happy game that just slightly more challenging. The voice acting also helps bring the characters to life and I'm glad they included it in the game as it's definitely not a requirement for something free. The Main Character also being voiced is a plus, though I can sense that her personality can be annoying to some players, but she was just endearing for me. Reminded me of J.B. from XOXO Droplets. Ironically, even if I did say this is a simple and happy game, I did shed a few tears because of some of their backstories and the happy endings that the game provides us. I hope people can also consider buying the DLC, if not to simply support the developers and get a few more cute scenes.
