Who left the Instagram filter on? When I booted up MK1 for the first time, I had to rub my eyes a few times. Everything was undeniably pretty, but was that game still Mortal Kombat? I mean, it is, but it is so very busy pandering to the social-media generation: Everything is scrubbed clean of the grime and crusted blood that was kind of the quintessence of the franchise, every character looks like the beauty filter version of themselves, and the color intensity is cranked up all the way to eleven. There is a character whose moves spawn literal fireworks, for God’s sakes. Pretty ones, with purple sparks and all. It definitely takes some getting used to. The campaign, too, is all grown up, with dramatic beats, intense camera angles, quite a bit of action, and a delicious amount of camp. It has a lot of fun introducing a new version of a lot of our favourite characters. Some of these variations landed better than others for me, but none of them were completely cringe. There is even a fun little twist, and the bad guy is the most engaging heel the franchise has had so far, even if his master plan fits on just as small a napkin as every other bad guy master plan of the franchise. The gameplay introduces a new mechanic: Every fighter now has a partner in the background, who can be made to tag in for an attack or two and otherwise mugs for the camera from the background. To me, that’s a mistake: One, I barely used them, two, it takes away from the machismo of settling things one on one until the walls are painted red. Fighting feels a bit more sluggish at first, but that’s maybe not a bad thing: The attacks feel more weighty somehow. But I just can’t get over how clean and pretty and eager to please everything looks. This is supposed to be Mortal Kombat, we are supposed to punch each other’s lights out down in the muck and the filth of peak edgelordiness, yet everything looks like a Mattel commercial. It’s still a lot of fun, but Mortal Kombat changed on me, and I find myself struggling to embrace it. TLDR: Quite the mood shift, so be prepared for that. Still fun, still excellent fisticuffs, but things were better in the olden days. Now, I have to go shake my fist at the clouds. P.S.: Declaration of bias: I treat all all fighting games as single player games, going through the story and then unlocking each character ending in easy or normal difficulty mode. Yes, I am a button-mashing scrub, so don’t come to me for opinions about fighting mechanics or multiplayer imbalances.

MK1 was a disaster on launch because of hair-brained WB and NRS executives trying to squeeze as much money out of loyal fans as possible. The second I saw that certain characters like Shang Tsung, a beloved icon of the series, be locked behind a pre-order, I knew this game was going to be incredibly expensive after the initial game purchase. Additional characters being $8 is one thing, but having kameos be $5 is wild. Fighting games, my favorite genre, are becoming wallet sucking atrocities. It's still a good game though, and if you've been waiting for a purchase, then now is the time because it is heavily discounted along with X and 11 in an actually very well priced bundle that includes EVERYTHING. This review takes into account buying the game now and not early on when it was designed to drain your wallet. The positives: - Graphics are absolutely stunning and sometimes what I see on screen looks almost real. - Combos and gameplay are still really fun and solid, I do not feel like this game was dumbed down too much with the kameo system. - The online is actually really good. As long as both players have a wired stable connection, you can have great matches even with 180ms pings. - Campaigns are good (I don't care about plot), and the towers keep you entertained when you have to take a break from online. Negatives: - Honestly, what in the f*** happened with the MTX decisions, because they went hard af with prices and dripfeeding content. Why is there a rotating shop? I absolutely hate that. People gave NRS like $150 and now the game isn't supported anymore. - The kameo system isn't garbage, but it's just a combo extending system akin to something like the assists from MvC, although more fleshed out, obviously. I don't hate it, but like what happened to 2v2 where it's just a better system that never had to go away, people love that mode. There is just so much content from previous games not added to MK1, like the krypt, challenge modes of all types, and test your might only appearing in towers and it's all just predetermined, - I wish there could have been filters for finding a match because I don't want to be asked to play against a wireless 230ms player with a 45fps benchmark. - There's not really a ton of outfits and gear to go for like in 11, but it's something I guess.
