The King of Fighters XV (KOF15) has solid gameplay improvements over the previous entry (KOF14), but it certainly doesn't come anywhere close to "shattering expectations". That's not to say it isn't a great game, there's just nothing that blew me away - unlike my experience with KOF96/97. Pros: - The gameplay and mechanics are a step up from KOF14 with more freedom in how you spend your meter, making labbing combo routes incredibly fun. - Input execution for special moves is at a good spot as it has leniency and is easy to learn. - Has a pretty solid roster of 61 characters (incl. DLCs). The cast features many old favourites from the Orochi saga, alongside great new additions like Dolores and Isla. - The DJ Station is an unprecedented feature packed with music from all previous entries, allowing full customization of menu and stage themes. - The graphics is, in general, an improvement from KOF14. The visual effects feel more punchy and vibrant. I feel that the music is better than a lot of other KOF entries, and has many remixes of older entries. However, I didn't find any of the original compositions to be comparable to the iconic themes in older entries like "Arashi no Saxophone" (KOF95), "Esaka?" (KOF96), "Bloody" (KOF97), "KD-0079" (KOF99), "Tranquilizer" (KOF2002UM) or "Tachi bou ke" (KOF14). - Great Multi-Monitor Support with a Borderless Windowed mode that works better than many games out there, allowing gamepad control even when clicking outside the screen. - Performance is great on RTX 4060, with no crashes or slowdowns at the time of review. Cons: - Game modes are barebones (Story, Versus, Training, and minimal Mission trials) and feels like a step down from KOF14. - Execution for hop input window is still as hard as in older entries. SNK could've at least increase the input window (to maybe 7/8 frames) to improve accessibility for casual fans. - Character models and animation quality are highly inconsistent. Some characters like Whip and Ryo somehow looks worse than in KOF14. While they mostly look better than KOF14, they still don't look great imo. - Personally, I find most of the costume re-designs to be pretty bad and the stages feel more static than KOF14's. On the latter, I think neither games managed to capture the magic in the early entries. - The DJ Station lacks informative text in the track listing and doesn't tell you which track belongs to which team/individual/etc - but this is more of a minor nitpick. - Encountered black screen in Story mode which took some time to fix; had to switch the in-game setting, Graphics > Decoder to "Hardware". Overall, KOF15 is perhaps one of the best KOF entries purely from a gameplay perspective and the DJ Station is a nostalgia treat if you're a long-time fan. However, the inconsistent visual quality can sometimes make the game hard on the eyes and the legacy execution barriers makes it difficult to recommend to a newcomer. If you've avoided the series because you didn't enjoy the execution barrier to basic things like hopping, I think you should skip this too. And if you despise auto-combos (for whatever reasons), do note that this game has it as well. Regardless, I do highly recommend KOF15, especially for fans. However, you might want to wait for the Ultimate edition when it goes on sale.
