You know that ugly girlfriend you like because of her personality? Yeah, that's exactly what this game is. The gameplay has some flaws. Sometimes the hitbox feels kinda crazy — you miss an enemy by just a couple of pixels, and other times you somehow hit enemies that are clearly out of range. There are enemies that damage you before their attack animation even starts (the train guards). Then there are these giant fat enemies that seem impossible to hit with aerial attacks. And I still haven't figured out if the game has some bug that randomly pauses itself every now and then, or if I'm just accidentally hitting pause in the middle of the chaos. Sometimes the game just gets exhausting instead of fun, and you're only pushing through to try to platinum it (pausing constantly because you're stressed out). The music is good sometimes, annoying other times. But in the end, what hooks you is that the game has the great personality. It has this vibe of a low-budget Eastern European gore B-movie that I've never seen in any other game. Full of over-the-top stuff, blood everywhere, and vulgarities galore. The interactivity with the scene is really solid. Enemies accidentally shoot each other. Different enemy factions fight among themselves. Things get thrown around, hitting both you and the enemies. There are stages where they actually replicate weird physics situations (like being on top of a moving train and getting moderately dragged backward every time you jump). There's a good variety of weapons you can use against enemies, and they're all interesting. The art is great and always sets up cool backgrounds. That's it. An ugly and drunk girlfriend. Sometimes kinda annoying, but with a really interesting and unique personality.

Mother Russia Bleeds is a game that greets you by kicking down your door and then complains you made a mess. enemies pile on like they’re being paid per concussion,, the combat hits with all the elegance of a brick in a washing machine, and every level looks like it was decorated by a nihilist with a crowbar and five minutes to live, enemies look like rejected mascots for a discount energy drink, half of them look like they’re melting, the other half look like they should be. its like a chaotic brawl held together with duct tape and bad decisions but somehow, against all logic, it’s actually brilliant.

It was a good game but it was pretty hard for me! I really liked the story, although it was minimal. Originally I only played it because I wanted something akin to Hotline Miami when it came to narrative as well as action in a sense, but this certainly was far removed from that, even if there was a pretty cool reference to the other game. I would say that is is unique, and there is lots of effort put into it based on the art in the backgrounds, the many different combos, and the way in which the levels may play out when it comes to the bosses. However, when simply going about each level, I say its not really fun. Each level has no real save points once you exit out of it, so if you are fighting the boss at the end of each chapter you may be a little tired of the monotony at that point, but shall not be able to shut the game down due to the fact that it would require you to play the chapter all over again. Things progressively get harder and take longer too, of course, so in the later levels this becomes especially apparent. When it comes to story, its pretty bare but still a good thing to pay attention to. Its mostly done through dialogue and maybe a bit of world building with backgrounds, but you play as a someone who was forced to be a drug addict and is out for revenge, simultaneously kicking off a revolution despite not really caring about that. Some lines were nice and the visuals as well were great but its not overly deep, and aside from some mechanics referencing the story, I would say easy to ignore. The game itself is a challenge, though, and I believe that it may have been designed to be played better with friends, but I do not have a local party to do that with and I am pretty sure that is how it must be hosted for multiplayer. However, it is playable alone even if there are some aspects that I can see being easier with a group, such as getting injections to heal with. Overall, it was a good game. I would really recommend if you find the sort of symbolism of addiction and medical suffering interesting, or like these challenging sort of classic styles of gameplay. I also really liked the graphics and the animations.
