★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ (4) / 5 With Fire & Sword often gets overlooked, but it’s actually a pretty cool take on the Mount & Blade formula. Set in 17th-century Eastern Europe, it brings a fresh historical setting and adds firearms into the mix, which really changes up the combat. It’s a bit buggier than Warband, sure, but it also introduces some solid improvements, like enhanced siege mechanics, a unique map based on real locations, and more story-driven content. If you’re into the time period or just want a different twist on the classic gameplay, it’s definitely worth checking out.

When adding period appropriate firearms to a base game that never needed them to thrive, the result is only a small boost to the overall experience. Fortunately, With Fire & Sword brings more than just muskets it introduces a new landmass, factions, and weapons. Still, these additions don’t fundamentally change the Mount & Blade formula. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, since the addictive core mechanics remain intact. The Mount & Blade series has never been known for storytelling or technical polish, and With Fire & Sword doesn’t break that mold. Running on the same engine as Warband, it continues to shine in large scale battles, but everything else models, textures, effects feels dated or outright poor. Even the campaign map looks worse this time around. The shift to real-world countries as factions also narrows the diversity of settings, as the developers aimed for realism at the cost of variety. This entry attempts to weave faction-specific storylines into the gameplay, but the flat characters and unengaging writing keep it from being memorable. The true strength still lies in combat. Massive battles lines of infantry clashing with cavalry charges remain thrilling. The addition of firearms adds a new tactical layer, letting you form musket lines to suppress enemies. However, given their slow reload times and inaccuracy, guns can’t always be relied upon, which prevents them from overpowering traditional melee combat. Momentum and directional strikes continue to make mounted combat especially satisfying, with landing a blow from horseback feeling as rewarding as ever. Outside of combat, the game offers the familiar mix of quests, ranging from simple caravan escorts to full scale conquests. Conquest remains the highlight, providing a difficult but rewarding challenge. Player choices influence relationships with companions, towns, and entire kingdoms, though interactions often boil down to whether you treated someone well or poorly. The factions aren’t as colorful or distinct as those in Warband, but history buffs may enjoy their grounding in European history. Perhaps the most impressive element of With Fire & Sword is how all of its systems come together to create a world that feels alive. No two players’ experiences will be exactly the same, as the dynamic political and military simulation evolves uniquely with each playthrough. Despite its dated presentation, this sense of living history remains the series’ greatest strength. Ultimately, With Fire & Sword doesn’t push the series forward in any meaningful way. Its additions feel more like an expansion than a full new installment, but given its modest price, that’s easier to forgive. The grindy but addictive mechanics that made Mount & Blade so enduring are still here, ready to devour dozens of hours. Just don’t expect innovation this is more about refining what already worked.

Mount & Blade: With Fire & Sword is the weird middle child of the franchise – not quite a sequel, not quite a mod, but still better than most of the junk that tries to do what it does. If you like muskets, cavalry charges, and dying instantly because some peasant sniped your horse with a flintlock pistol, you’re in the right place. This one ditches the medieval sandbox of Warband and drops you into a gritty 17th-century Eastern Europe setting with real historical factions. It’s grim, it’s messy, and it captures the chaos of early gun warfare better than any polished AAA title. Muskets suck to reload, but when they hit, they hit. Watching a cavalry line get shredded by a volley is equal parts hilarious and horrifying. But don’t expect polish. The UI is archaic, the animations are stiff, and the campaign has a weirdly railroaded main quest. If you’re coming from Warband, you’ll miss the marriage politics and feudal depth. It leans more toward scripted quests than sandbox freedom, and some of it just feels unfinished. Still, it’s Mount & Blade. You can build your army, siege castles, roleplay as a Slavic warlord or Swedish gunman, and live that mercenary life in a world where the rules are simple: shoot first, loot later, reload never. Not for casuals. Not for the faint of heart. But if you want raw, sandbox brutality with muskets and mustaches, With Fire & Sword scratches an itch that few games dare to touch.

It's a fun game, I definitely recommend it if you like strategy games. Even more so if you like Eastern European history. Not as polished as warband but still decent, i'd rate it 8.5/10.

It is not a bad game, not by a long shot. You won't find even a fraction of the mods Warband has, unfortunately, to the point that I haven't even played half a dozen F&S mods. Unfortunately the game plays quite differently than Warband, too - don't expect to come in and enjoy it in the exact same way. This game is intended to be more 'story'-ish, following quests to join factions and potentially even rule them, instead of founding your own. You CAN'T found your own, in fact, nor can you even recruit from a village without being allied with the proper owner. You'll likely rely mostly on mercenaries (which are customizable to a degree which is neat) and tavern troops, until you join a faction. I don't enjoy it as much as Warband, and most of the features added to it have been back ported and improved in one way or another, but it's worth a shot.
