First time I write a review for a game, but for Battle Brothers, I had to. This is probably the best game I've played in my life. I've played it more than 1000hrs already, and I'll definitely play more. The learning curve is incredible: it probably took me 100hrs just to get over the basics and start to understand the game (!). For some people, or if the game doesn't 'catch' you (for me it did, this dark fantasy, dangerous, universe is very catchy), having so much to learn just to get over the fist stages will make the game non-attractive. For me, I loved it: this video game is very much like chess or poker, in the sense that there is ALWAYS more to learn. To enjoy this game, you have to enjoy looking for answers. Personnally I looked for guides, videos on youtube, posts on reddit, to learn about the game or some particular ennemies. Unfortunately I would say that most of the guides and advice you find (esp old content) are outdated and not great for your learning. In the end, you have to figure out this game on your own. (For those who look for good content to really learn the game: Deductor and Slurgi on youtube) This game is incredibly complex and there are many strategies you can use to beat it. Like, an infinity of ways to play it. This I love very much, because that means that even after hundreads of hours, the game still has so much to offer. I must say that one thing that makes this game incredible is how balanced it is. Many ways you can play it, not one strategy that will be unbeatable. Most strategies will have some weaknesses at least against some particular ennemies. Only after 500hrs did I really understand deeper aspects of the game and how to play it: for instance I understood how 'Initiative' (one of your stats, along with HP, fatigue, resolve) could be at the center of my strategy. Before I thought I had to build strong armored (battleforged) guys for the lategame, a linear progression to stronger gear. I thought, because I had read it in many guides, that Initiative was a useless stat, you never needed to care about it except for some particular builds, like 'Fencer' or 'Qatal duelist'. Then I understood how initiative was NOT useless, because the turn order is so important in this game. Initiative is basically speed, so high initiative means you will hit the ennemy first. So yeah, much less armor, majority of my company 'nimble' (and not battleforged), but I play like nomads, or goblins: my guys are quick and dodgy, they almost always hit first. And this works super well. Anyway, I could write a full guide on tips on how to play the game based on my 1000hrs of play, but won't find the time. 1000hrs of play, and I'm still learning new things and starting new campaings to experiment alternative strategies. I just really want to say how much of a gem this game is. Almost never in my life did I find a game so perfectly polished, so balanced and challenging. This game is very hard. Your guys will die a lot, especially when you figure out the game. Even with a LOT of experience in the game, you can lose many guys in different occasions. This makes the game realist and challenging. There is a sense of danger. If you make big mistakes, you will pay for them, you'll take big damage. And also if you lack luck sometimes, you'll suffer losses. Not easy to lose your fighters! I don't advice new players to play 'Ironman'. Even myself, I rarely play Ironman. The game is already pretty hard, I want to give myself a chance to replay the tough battles and learn by repetition. Anyway, you got the idea: Battle Brothers is hard, so so much to learn, but it's truly incredible. Hundreads of hours of fun if it catches you, most definitely. This game is so well-made, I really praise the developers for creating this gem. The DLCs are very good, give a lot more depth to the game. Since I discovered Battle Brothers, I look for game that could bring me the same joy, but for now I haven't found anything. Only chess and poker, when I was younger, gave me the same strategic drive.
I discovered this game abut 5 years ago. I have been addicted ever since. The game itself takes the approach that reminds me of Skyrim. There is no set way to being or play the game itself. You succeed and you find yourself leading a company that can make you filthy rich. You fail and you could potentially lose someone you have spent literal days crafting into a killing machine. Very few games I take the time to research so I can understand it better. The mechanics are fun and simple. Once you understand how the perks can help each other, you will have so much more agency when upgrading your bros. The experience is worth every penny. Battle Brothers is once of the best games I have ever played. I always find myself coming back and playing for hours on end, enjoying every part of the game's progression, the story you build for yourself and the complete freedom you have around the game. To start, this is game is the epitome of Sandbox. You spawn in and then you're given freedom to do whatever you want to do that the game offers. This mainly begins with contracts, recruiting more 'brothers' and building your mercenary company but can also mean you want to explore and chase loot in ruins, fight in the arenas, operate as a trading company or raid and pillage those caravans for the goods! The game was clearly made with love for sandbox and difficulty, with a truly brutal turn-based combat system that rewards good builds and battle tactics, and punishes stupidity like no other game. Battle Brothers is a hard game, no doubt but once you win battles flawlessly, the sense of accomplishment is second to none. You will have hardships and losses with your victories, but in the end, the point is not about beating the game but the story that is told of your company. Which leads into my next point: The Brothers of Battle Brothers. Each character you recruit is unique, with skills, stats and traits that make them unique, but also with excellent backstories that are extremely varied; You don't just have one backstory for the butcher, but many, and they change how you might view them, as well as the traits they begin with. Each background and traits might change your mind on someone who has reasonably good stats, or on the other hand you might take the risk of conflicting backgrounds if the stats are too good to pass up - Beware the double Hedge Knight idea, they are not friends. The game also makes you not only root for your company but individual brothers themselves, and you'll have your favourites and your fodder to save your favourites from certain death, because death is a very pivotal part of this game. You will get attached to brothers who in one moment, are thriving, and the next, are dead on the ground, permanently. But you will also see those brothers you once expected to keep around become heroes who build the story of -your- game, as once again, there is no main story, only what you do and what adds to the replay ability of this game to become endless. I think this is the main reason why Battle Brothers moves beyond the average game that does perma-death, sandbox adventure, is that the origins you can play, the uniqueness of theme and no handholding / intro quests adds to the part that you are in a living, breathing world that goes on without you. Each playthrough is a story, most that will end in your death or need to retire, but some might go on with great victory. For me, this game is a 9/10, and made a 10/10 with the Legends Mod, which I highly recommend you get after one playthrough of the base game. The DLC are excellent and none of them are a waste of money or not needed, as they add alot to the game and build on the initial vanilla, not invalidating it or overhauling it. Legends Mod goes a step further and adds alot more, but can be a difficulty spike for newer players. This game is for you if you like: - Medieval Fantasy games with a darker feel - Harder, turn-based fighting reliant on strategy and tactics - Sandbox games where you make your story - A guarantee of replayability - A mix of dark horror writing and humour that spices the game up Lastly, if you pick up the game, take all the time you can with it. Read the background stories, read the pop-ups and take in the world you are in. And remember, losing is fun.
