Spoiler free. Muv luv contains muv luv extra and unlimited so i will write separately on both. Muv luv extra a lot of people dislike this one and see it as just a chore to get to alternative which im sure if you are looking at buying muv luv you have heard of. I however disagree. I will preface this by saying I've never played a slice of life rom com before extra so i may like this entry due to that. It means even if it is very cliche or the like I won't notice such things i dont have the prior knowledge required so my review is from that perspective. Muv luv extra is very charming it is definitely dated art wise no doubt but the myriad of characters voice quirks and different expressions are quite good conveying the emotion in question very well. Of course the presentation isn't the only part thats charming. The writing has a fun absurdity to it everyone and everything is over the top even the characters playing the "straight man" role. Each of the characters has a good bit of depth even now they aren't just their gag and each of them despite the absurdity do feel like people. However I do feel they are only a base for unlimited and alternative to build on at this point they get explored a lot more in those games. The mc is at his most annoying in extra his personality is very abrasive and in general kind of dense and cruel though I dont think its intentional. He reminds me of the mc from chaos head for some reason just not nearly as messed up well maybe at one point actually. Extra has your usual route structure like other vn though its common routes I wouldn't say are anything worth noting it's character routes can be quite good at times. In the later games the route differences become smaller but in extra they are proper routes. My personal favourite route was probably Class Rep's i liked Ayamine's route a lot until I did some maths and it just became kind of disgusting. You may not notice it on your first playthrough but extra does have a lot of hints to events im unlimited and alternative so I recommend paying a fair amount of attention in that regard if you want to get the full experience from the later games. Overall I'd say whilst not as strong as its peers muv luv extra is about a 7 out of 10 dropping to a 6 at some points. I see extra as set up for the characters Muv luv unlimited this is where things get going. I consider this as setup for the world of muv luv though that doesn't mean it lacks character work. It's a drastic shift in tone and genre from slice of life to military sci-fi. The same characters are there however things are overall more real despite this. In extra slap stick was quite common but in unlimited it's treated a lot more seriously. The same thing that would be shrugged off in extra like being hit by a car would be an actual life threatening event in unlimited. The characters change with the tone aswell they get a lot deeper and begin to lean more to them as actual people as opposed to their gag whilst they are present they are rare in comparison to extra. Instead of the route approach from extra unlimited has character endings they do not add enough to be considered a route in my opinion. They instead work arcs for each character into the overall narrative which they do quite well giving each their moment to shine. The harshness of the characters as opposed to their counterparts in extra also makes it even more impactful when they do open up. The mc also is quite different whilst still similar to the chaos head mc he does actually develop as a person in unlimited as he's forced to to keep up with this new world. He does however do more speeches here and in alternative which do get on my nerves a tad. The build up of the overarching villain of muv luv in this game is done very well through how the world itself is presented the very atmosphere and everything that everyone does is influenced by them. They feel present in all areas and as such you never really feel safe which is quite fun. Unlimited does still have a good amount of comedy despite the bleaker setting. Said comedy is still quite fun mostly at the mcs expense which is nice since I still think he's not very good yet. It also obviously is a nice contrast to the rest of the games grim tone. There are a lot of standout rather intense and or cinematic moments too. Though since muv luv as a whole doesn't really do descriptions it more shows through it's cgs its age does become most apparent in its set pieces. They however are still passable at least. All in all I think I much prefer unlimited to extra it feels like the series really comes into its own with this entry so I'd give it probably a 7.5 or 8 out of 10 a nice step up.

Very good VN. And very underrated one. I mean, reviews are very positive and stuff, but... even within many of these positive reviews you can see something like 'uh, you just need to endure this to get to great Alternative' or 'it's meh, but you need this for better understanding of 1337 Alternative' . Some people even claim that you can just read main route or even safely skip it entirely and just start reading Alternative right away... Ehm, excuse me? EXCUSE ME?! How is it even possible? Alternative, without slightest doubts, is a top VN. One of the best if not the best. But I have no idea how it could be that great without Extra and Unlimited. Yeah, from absolutely formal point of view, Alternative will tell you a lot about events of Extra and Unlimited. A lot, but not everything. And characters won't have that depth, events won't have that impact. Everything won't just be the same. Context is critical. Not persuaded? Here are few spoiler free tips for you. What is Alternative about? Main character is trying to save something special and also prevent something horrible. Why the first thing is so special for him? - you will discover it in Extra. Why the second thing is so horrible? - you will discover it in the very end of Unlimited. Still on the fence? Here is one last tip. Muv-Luv trilogy is a kinetic novel. That means? It has only one story. It has many routes, you may even consider them as secondary or optional, but no. Everyhing you do here is a part of the main story. And all your choices will be adressed lated. All your choices. Unlimited will track all your choices in Extra. Alternative will track all your choices in Extra and Unlimited. The most recent ending in Extra will affect the beginning in Unlimited, while the most recent ending in Unlimited will affect the beginning in Alternative. You may get an impression that I'm advocating for Extra just because it's important for Alternative, but may still be meh on it's own? Nope. It's indeed very fun stuff to read. It's absolutely self-sufficient VN with lot's a work done. All dialogs are fully voiced. Sprites are simply mindblowing. With lot's of animations and grimaces. That's why even watching casual scenes may be very fun and engaging. Overall, extra is 66% comedy and 33% drama. Unlimited is 33% comedy and 66% drama. Alternative - 33% drama and 66% tragedy. The last but not least - reading order and cut content. It is only important to read the trilogy in proper order. 1) Extra; 2) Unlimited; 3) Alternative. An order for the rest of VNs in the serie is not that critical and you will figure everything out yourself. Do not visit community hub - 100% you will catch a spoiler. As to the cut content - all Muv-Luv VNs on Steam are censored. But the patches for the trilogy exists and good people have it on local forum. Make sure to check it and grab ones. Prudes and shills will claim that you don't need it - ignore them. Now you are ready to make a deep dive into legendary trilogy with roughly 150 hours of reading.

While it serves as setup for Alternative, and it does a really good job at that, i really enjoyed all of it even besides that. Presentation is also top notch and the characters are rather likable. Some suggest to do the 2 main routes in Extra and move on after, but really, you should finish all of it.

This is like the "Better Call Saul" of visual novels. It starts off on a really odd note and just makes no sense and seems a bit mundane. In time though it pays off and things start coming together and the story gets more interesting. Highly recommended!

I'm a grown man who hasn't completed a visual novel in almost 15 years. I believed I'd long since seen the best of what the genre had to offer, and frankly I was bored when I bounced off newer titles like Somnium Files. Then, about a month ago I purchased Muv-Luv on a whim. In the time since, I've logged 40+ hours and thoroughly 100%'d the game. It's hard for me to put into words why this game captivated me. It's like packing up a bunch of old books, and finding a note a girl wrote to you 20 years ago that you used as a bookmark. I implore you to welcome Muv-Luv into your heart, as I have.
