Storm 4 is Naruto at full volume. Big emotional fights, massive jutsus, dramatic story battles, glowing eyeballs, tragic backstories, and enough screen effects to make your monitor feel personally threatened. I love that this is one of those anime fighting games you can enjoy without being a hardcore fighting game person. You can jump in, pick your favorite ninja, throw hands, teleport around, yell internally, and let the game turn every match into a full cinematic meltdown. The visuals are gorgeous, the ultimate jutsus are ridiculous in the best way, and the story battles really do capture that over-the-top Naruto drama. It is not just about fighting. It is about fighting with seventeen layers of trauma and a soundtrack holding you emotionally hostage. The roster is also a huge part of the fun. There are so many characters to mess around with, and half the joy is building teams based on favorites, grudges, or whatever weird little vibe makes sense in the moment. It can be chaotic. Sometimes there is so much happening on screen that I am not fully sure if I am winning or being spiritually exfoliated by particle effects. But honestly, that is part of the charm. If you love Naruto, Storm 4 absolutely delivers. It is flashy, dramatic, fun, and completely allergic to subtlety.
If you grew up watching Naruto, this game is basically fan service in the best way possible. The story mode hits all the big moments and actually makes them feel cinematic instead of just throwing fights at you. This is also, by far, the best out of all the Storm games. I actually played this back on release on Xbox in 2016 before I even knew Naruto Shippuden was a thing. I had only watched OG Naruto on Netflix, and at the time American Netflix didn’t even have Shippuden. I was also too young to really understand social media well enough to realize there was more to the story out there, but I digress. Even though the game ended up spoiling Tobi’s identity for me, it honestly enhanced my experience watching Shippuden later. I remember eagerly waiting to understand what Sasuke’s purple eye was and what “Reanimated” meant, and why so many characters had it under their names. Combat is flashy, easy to pick up, and just fun to mess around with, especially with how many characters and abilities there are. The gameplay loop is still incredibly fun even today, and I love the interactive voice lines between certain character matchups and their ultimate attacks. Sadly, the only things holding it back are the lack of Boruto-era characters (since Connections exists now) and the fact that parts of the story mode are literally a slideshow. Long story short, for a 10-year-old game, it still holds up extremely well.
