The has a simple story, with some fun little back and forth between the characters. The gameplay is engaging and does a great job of creating a flow. When things click you glide through the levels while building your combo. Gaining insta-kill attacks by killing certain enemies with the right type of attack adds a lot to the gameplays rhythm, almost like reactionary puzzles to maximise that flow. Collectibles are fun to search for offering new powerup currency or one of 8 secret levels. The ranking system doesn't feel oppressive like in some games. You can safely ignore them and still attain most of the shop unlocks. Each level also offers three simple challenges (don't fall into pits, kill x enemy, kill boss in x time, don't take damage during x section). A hard mode is locked behind beating the game. I usually dislike such mechanics, but the hard mode is a significant change unlike most games. The levels remain almost the same, but the enemy frequency, their placements, and additional platforming obstacles really do add a challenge that make it worth playing through again. I got 100% achievements and it was worth the time to do so.

I’ll start my review by saying this: I really hope there’s a sequel. Not just because I genuinely enjoyed the game and had a good time with it, but because it feels like there’s untapped potential here. The core gameplay is solid, but it lacks a certain depth that I think a follow-up could really build on. The most obvious issue is how small the game is. It took me about 5 to 6 hours to finish the story on normal mode and maybe another 10 to grab every achievement, including hard mode. Your mileage may vary of course; if you struggle a bit more you might add another 5 to 10 hours. But it’s worth noting that if you don’t care about hard mode or completionism, and you’re reasonably experienced with games like this, the story will probably take no more than 6 to 7 hours. Even compared to other 2D indie titles, this one is very short, so that’s something to keep in mind before buying. Which brings me to the real question: is it still worth the money? Gameplay I’ll start with the gameplay, since that’s usually the main reason to play something like this. The controls are mostly tight, the animations look great, and when everything clicks the action flows really well. I saw some reviews criticizing the hypercharge mechanic, and I get why, but personally I enjoyed how it turns each section into a bit of a puzzle. If you die, you can experiment with more optimal ways to use the charges you’re given. That said, it does push you into a specific approach at times, since it often expects you to kill a certain enemy first to gain a charge and then spend it on the next big threat. For me, that added a nice rhythm because you can’t just mindlessly spam attacks - well, you can, but it’s definitely harder. Beyond that, though, there isn’t a lot of depth. The other key mechanics are the guillotine boosts (sort of like the pogo jumps in Hollow Knight) and rolling attacks, which are useful but fairly simple. The ceiling grab felt a bit awkward at first and I’m still not a huge fan, but it became manageable over time. Frankly, I feel like sometimes it can be a bit janky but it's rare. Enemy variety is fine for such a short game, though still pretty limited. The level design itself is quite good, with a decent amount of variety, but I wasn’t too impressed with most of the bosses. They’re acceptable, just not particularly exciting, and I actually had more fun working through the levels than fighting the bosses. On the positive side, there’s some light itemization that’s surprisingly fun. You can pick different ultimates and secondary weapons, and equip charms with various buffs. Overall, it’s a very solid foundation that works well most of the time, but I kept wishing for more depth. That’s a big part of why I’d love to see a sequel. I’ve seen some reviews where people said they didn’t feel like finishing because of this, and while that reaction seems a bit extreme to me, I do understand where they’re coming from. Story The story itself is pretty fun. It’s nothing mind-blowing, but it nails the 90s vibe, and the dialogue is entertaining with its clear homage to old SNES titles and similar retro games. It really feels like a 90s action movie, and I enjoyed that atmosphere a lot. I’ve never played any other Ninja Gaiden games, but I had no trouble following along. I especially liked the dynamic between Kenji and Kumori, and I’d love to see that relationship developed further in a sequel, which is hinted at by the true ending on hard mode . Art and OST I’ll keep this part short because there’s really only one thing to say: AMAZING . Both the pixel art and the soundtrack are just that good. If the rest of the game were on the same level, it would easily be an all-time great. I haven’t played the Blasphemous games yet, but from what I’ve seen, The Game Kitchen is honestly one of the best pixel art studios working today. The OST is pure chef’s kiss and probably my favorite of the year, it's way beyond even heavy hitters like Silksong. Verdict Honestly, there aren’t many games out there with this kind of feel, especially among recent releases, so it’s easy to forgive a lot just by the nature of its existence. The main issue in my opinion is the lack of depth and overall content. For the price I don’t feel like I got scammed or anything, but if you’re the type who just plays the story once and calls it a day, then yeah, the price might feel a bit high. In that case I’d recommend waiting for a sale. If you’re planning to go for all achievements (which isn’t too bad and adds some extra challenge) then full price is fine. 7.5/10

ITS THE YEAR OF THE NINJA BAYBEEEEEEEEEEE solid 9/10 baller art direction, but that's to be expected coming from the Blasphemous devs. Kenji's animations are fluid as ♥♥♥♥ and he feels fast & snappy, which is exactly what you need when you're playing a tough platformer like this one The hypercharge mechanic is mad cool & well utilized/developed throughout the course of the game, forces you to activate your singular neuron instead of just killing enemies without giving it much thought. i hope they make more levels in the future with a DLC that expands on the mechanic even more music is top tier, but again, given the pedigree of the NES Ninja Gaiden trilogy, that is to be expected. The 4-2 remix goes ESPECIALLY hard i haven't messed with the talisman system much, i used the no checkpoint heal tali + the life on kill tali, makes getting S ranks a lot easier. maybe on a future playthrough i'll try a bunch of other combinations, especially considering how many scarabs you get throughout the game if you explore a lil bit (which you should if you wanna unlock secret ops) bosses are GREAT, absolutely tough customers, will demand you learn their patterns or die trying. luckily i haven't encountered much ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ at all with them. favorite is easily the final boss my one issue with the game is how Kumori's gear is balanced. Most of them feel really weak in comparison to the grenade, so there's not much experimentation when it comes to sub-weapons. the first ragebound art you start with is easily the best one throughout the entire game because of how much damage it deals to bosses. seriously, that ♥♥♥♥ takes MEGA chunks off of them it's nuts. I also encountered veeeeeeery few instances of poor hit detection but they were very rare and didn't ♥♥♥♥ me over too much. ninja gaiden 4 cannot come soon enough, and with shinobi: art of vengeance also available (& toptier), the year of the ninja has never been this strong. buy this ♥♥♥♥ yesterday
